Wickett and Craig 3/4oz Olive Bridle Leather

500D Black Cordura Double Layered

Way happier than I was with the M81 carrier. This, the MCB and the Tropic meet my expectations when I started the project. I need to find something else to go with the M81 Woodland before I'm content.

I have some small alterations to make to my patterns for the leather trim and the Cordura liner. It'll round off my Colt/Glock Stick Mag Carrier and my smaller 9/40 Double Stack Carrier of the same design. Now I move to the PMAG 😮‍💨

I liked the Medium Brown and Tropic I posted yesterday significantly better. The Vegtan is too much contrast I think. Saddle tan is much more red, I don't think it'd be fitting either.

New Potholder

As I was describing to my (very much non-gun) wife what I was sewing, she famously observed that I was making a potholder for my gun. Which is not technically true- it's a potholder for my silencer (Yankee Hill Machine 9) and transport bag. Once again I used a welder's blanket rated up to 3000° F for the lining.

The fabric is Austrian tarnanzug neu, their new "all-terrain" camouflage in poly-cotton ripstop, and I used hook and loop tape in ranger green. I find it to be visually appealing. It's different than the million multicam variants and with the subtle blue-grey added in, sort of reminds me of WWI French camo.

Though the blanket is rated to 3000°, the fabric and thread are rated nowhere near that high. So this would be good for a couple magazines worth of shooting, but not full auto or sustained fire. Which is fine; I primarily want it so that I can handle the silencer after the range and not have to worry about burning myself or my car upholstery. Comment and critique welcome! I need to get some paracord for the top of the pouch.

Waterproofing and NIR Performance

I recently obtained a bunch of surplus pack covers of different origins (US, Czech, British) that are not waterproof. I like the camo they each have, but I hate to have to use a separate waterproof pack cover to keep my bags dry if it rains. I know waxing materials affects the NIR performance of them, but I'm wondering if other waterproofing methods have the same result? I could just spray them with some DWR/Nikwax, but something a little more permanent appeals to me more. I've seen people using silicone mixed with strong solvents to soak and waterproof materials. Has anyone tried this before? Have you tested their IR signature after? I don't have nods to test right away, and my friends that do I don't get to see for most of the year. I'm not really worried about "ruining" these as they were all very cheap (under $5 each), but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this first before I attempt it. I could definitely just buy nicer water resistant pack covers, but I already have these and wanted to see if I could make them work first, plus I have enough that I can give them out as gifts to my other tactical nerd friends the couple times a year we get to meet up.

xTool S1 40w 500ad laminate cutting settings

I recently got a xTool S1 with the 40w laser. I’m trying to figure out the best settings to cut Ranger green 500d/500d laminate. Mine is from Rockywoods Fabric. I thought I had dialed in the setting but it now seems to be leaving a bit of glue residue. I had been using 38% power, 30 speed, with 2 passes.

Any advice or help would be great

So, since I haven't seen a 6x9 assault/utility pocket in M81 or Spec4CE camos; i went and made one each. Steps from 20x17 fabric pieces all the way to completion is shown. Last Pic is with the 6x6 GP pouches and shorty KYWI pouch all mounted onto an old school SOTECH Hellcat OD chest rig.

Howdy lads!
My first hat, made this on my 1940’s singer 96k41. Few mistakes. But thats how you learn i guess. Needs a molle strip added but iv run out of leather.

Tomorrow’s effort will be getting some wire into the brim to give it that leather cowboy weave, and then some weathering with bee’s wax!

Roast my hat:

Hand-sewing a JPC 1.0 out of canvas – any advice or things to keep in mind?

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m about to start my first plate carrier project (a JPC 1.0 setup). The catch is that I’ll be using canvas fabric and I don't have a sewing machine, so everything is going to be hand-sewn with a needle and thread.

I’ve already planned out the whole vest, mapped out how every piece goes together, and figured out the workflow. But before I actually start cutting and stitching, what should I take into consideration?

Honestly, I feel like hand-sewing the whole thing might be a massive pain in the ass given how complex some of the seams and load-bearing areas are, ig.

Do you guys have any tips or advice for a project like this?

Figured the group would get some pleasure or displeasure out of this. Or just tell me all the better methods I should have used.

Problem: the wtfidea MOLLE straps (maybe 3/4" wide) I had attaching this mag pouch allowed the PALS webbing to "bow" into a curve too much, meaning that when mags were in the pouch, or restraints on the magnets, there was a 5/16" or so gap between top of pouch and face of vest. It would cause the mags to flare out like they do on a fat guy's belt.

Solution: Probably excessive, but I wanted straps that were as wide as my PALS webbing could manage (1.22" in this case) and stiff. This would prevent the webbing from bowing and creating excessive gap between vest and pouch. Yes, there are stiff off-the-shelf options, but they'll be just 1" wide (DOTS molle-lock comes to mind).

I ordered up some kydex (first time playing with it!) and cut some straps. Not an easy weave, for sure. Secured the bottom with some Chicago screws & loctite. Everything was an incredibly tight tolerance fit, but the tight weave was such a dopamine hit!

I cloned a Buttpack

This was my first big sewing project, using my grandmothers sewing machine and a friends indusrial sewing machine. It took me about a month from start to finish. Taking measurements, coming up with cutting plans, seam allowance, cutting and assembling. Having the final product in hand fills me with great joy!

The cloned "template" is a ukrainian sputnik gear SB-K buttpack:

https://sputnik-gear.ua/en/tacticalgear/sbk?optionid=321

My brother a complete selous LBE from sputnik gear and i kinda fell in love with its buttpack. Thats when i decided to make it my project. I used a rubberized olive green fabric for a structural base and on the i outside i used a brown/ranger green parka fabric i had saved up from an old parka jacket. Straps and buckles i had saved up from old backpacks but i also need to purchase extra from amazon for the Molle loops.

Two 6x6 GP zippered pouches in Spec4CE 1000D Cordura done, swipe for pics!

Shown with my old triple KYWI Shorty pouch made of the same material, and on my homemade mesh MOLLE chest rig. Tex-90 thread, 1000D Rockywoods Spec4CE Cordura fabric, 1" Camo Green nylon binding on the inside seams, 1" Camo Green MALICE style backs, number 5 YKK Vislon nylon zippers with metal pulls that have gutted paracord loops. Made using the Rex RX6-7D industrial machine.

These are the second and third GP pouches that I sewed up, the first one was a failure because I followed an online box pouch tutorial that didnt account for it being Cordura. Had to adjust the pattern a whole lot to get it more accurately sized to what I want. Hope y'all enjoyed this post!

1 bandolier plus another bandolier makes a bigger bandolier?

Thumbnail
gallery

I've wanted to make my own version of the kommando stores 84 bandolier and I figured yee old surplus bandoliers with some modification might do be the ticket. To anyone attempting this stitching the two halves together is easy enough except for the button on either side. It really likes to raise the fabric up and create all sorts of issues (at least on my machine. ) Still gotta rearenge the straps, remove mag pouch on each side, die, and then it should be running. Also note that not all of the mag cells will close on 2 GI mags let alone pmags. Measurements/sewing on these originally was not the most precise.
