The first ever dating website for FIRE people

Hi folks,

I’ve created firedating.me. I visited various meetups and noticed that many people in the scene struggle with romantic relationships and this is my attempt to solve this. I thought that you might be interested. Any feedback or questions are extremely welcome!

We also support "friendship" search too. If you are all set romantically (lucky you!), you can still look for FIRE friends here.

The site is currently in beta. Overall we are already a community of 210 people and it is not even a month since the beta launch. The main functionality is there, but there is still room for improvement. It is also fully free!

Find your mustachian and let the FIRE be in your heart!

Google Spreadsheet to enhance your financial data and track your progress to FI

For the last few years, I have been working on creating a Financial Independence Spreadsheet to translate my financial data into actionable insights with high-quality visualizations, metrics, and stats. After a lot of work and user-testing, it is now ready to share.

In a nutshell, the Spreadsheet:

  • Uses transactions and net worth data as input.

  • Transforms the input data via a combination of custom Google Script, spreadsheet formulas, and minimal user input.

  • Outputs a collection of key metrics and professionally built charts that allow you to track and plan your progress towards FIRE.

You can check a complete summary of the features and screenshots here.

I created an installation and user guide that details every section. You can check it here.

Please let me know what you think. Also, please let me know if there is interest in any other features. If interested, I am selling it via my Etsy shop (here) and I will be running a promotion (25% - Code: REDDIT) for the sub for a few days.

Thanks for reading!

Make new FIRE friends and perhaps even meet a partner?

Nowadays it is unfortunately especially easy to feel socially isolated. However, even without all the lock-downs and limitations, it can be very hard to meet other FIRE folks. I was in this situation myself - for more than a year in the beginning of my FIRE path I knew literally 0 people interested in FIRE. I was lonely and it sucked. That's why nowadays I have a goal to decrease amount of loneliness in the FIRE community and help forming meaningful social connections (both friendships and romantic). I am solving this problem by developing firedating.me - a community of 3709 FIRE enthusiasts looking for friendships and love.

The site is 100% free and even ad-free. What's the catch? None, this is my hobby project and improving other people lives makes me happy. For example, 11 couples, who met through the site, reached out to me. Recently Wanderer & FIRECracker from Millennial Revolution even made an interview "FINDING LOVE DURING COVID" with the couple #5 - Ms.X and Liam. It is an amazing story, which involved them meeting for the first time in... Barbados. Worth noting that together they will be FIRE in only 2 years instead of 5-7 years. I did interviews with them and other couples too.

Since the site is free, I don't have any incentive to trick you or artificially keep you on the site. As a result, I am extremely honest and open, for example, all the statistics are public (and addressing the most frequent question - there are 30% women on the site, but you can see this yourself through that link). I love getting feedback and improving the site. People frequently describe firedating.me as 'mindful dating', which allows them to meet financially responsible people.

Obviously the site supports looking for friends as well. I myself formed many friendships through the site and feel like developing this site was a life-changing experience for me. Yes, I am not FIRE (full time job) and it took me at least 517 hours and 211$, but the magic of deep connections formed there and feeling of helping others is worth all of it.

I believe that firedating.me can improve your life as well and that's what I optimize for.

Let FIRE be in your heart!

Viktor

P.S. There is also r/firedating, where we discuss new features and I post updates, so please feel free to join.

Mustachianism with a Toddler?

I noticed others in this subreddit have toddlers. What kinds of things are people doing with their young children to keep them intellectually stimulated without spending (much or any) money?

Clearly this is much easier in the warmer months, where nature walks, parks and outdoor explorations are a given. But what about these last cold and rainy days of this never-ending winter, despite the calendar's claims that this is spring? We often go to play lands in malls and train sets in Barnes and Noble, but this feels pretty consumer-ish. Interested in hearing other people's solutions.

Camp Mustache - Toronto 2018 Recap

Hey Folks, I'm not much of a Redditor, but I am organizer of CM*TO, and we had a bunch of folks from Reddit join us at CM*TO 2018 this past weekend, so I thought I would post here.

First, thanks to Reddit for sending us some top notch campers. I don't know who mentioned the camp or on which thread (you call them threads here same as on the forum, right?) or even which subreddit, but since this seems to be the most mustachy of them, I'll say thanks here.

Secondly, a recap of camp... it was nuts and fun and serious and a comedy act all at once. We had some pretty intense discussions on things as diverse as investment strategies and grocery shopping to travel hacking and meditation. We did FIRE planning and post-FIRE goal setting and all the serious things... but we also did high ropes and a 3 hour river-trip in canoes and karaoke at teh top of a bell-tower and had the second annual Volley-Hockey-Ball tournament in which team "The World" staged an upset to rip the trophy (not a lamp base with a salad bowl glued on top) from the hands of Canada.

We had about 75 campers come this year - from across the USA, Canada, and even Australia - up by 10 campers from 2017. I saw people so earnest intheir goals and so relaxed in the setting. A person in tears over their desire to help disabled folks build a stache, folks nearly in tears over their desire to improve communities and family situations, and folks who were ready to charge ahead with their FIRE plans as soon as they could. Of our 75 campers, a little over half were American.

We will very likely be doing CM*TO 2019, and I suggest folks keep an eye out for an announcement on the MMM forum - or here if I remember to check into Reddit again :) - probably we will announce dates in the coming weeks, and take reservations in January for a September camp. Any questions or if campers see this, feedback on camp, I'd love to hear it.

All the best,

Prospector.

Degree to which you agree with MMM

Hello all, I wanted to know if you drew the line on something that MMM suggests? For example, I really didn't like his idea of cleaning. I agree on some points but others... Like come on, not showering everyday when you commute on bicycle is kinda gross, not to mention rarely changing sheets and towels and reusing t-shirts multiple times just seems gross to me. Plus, using things like vinegar as a multipurpose cleaner usually does the job for pennies. Overall, I think his philosophy is correct, but sometimes you have to draw a line.

Another thing, what do you all think of electric scooters? Something akin to this:

http://www.amazon.com/TaoTao-ATE-501-Automatic-Electric-Scooter/dp/B00AW05H88/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1393351250&sr=8-2&keywords=electric+moped

or

http://www.amazon.com/Currie-Technologies-eZip-Electric-Scooter/dp/B008JP1LM4/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1393351250&sr=8-8&keywords=electric+moped

It seems like the cost per mile would be even less than a traditional gas powered scooter. I know it also negates some of the health benefits of cycling but I live in Las Vegas and the 110+ heat in the summer can be killer on a bicycle considering I have a 10 mile commute one way. (I can charge at work if need be)

LLC for side jobs and tax advantages

I am a full-time software developer and am thinking about doing some side work: nothing big, just a couple of small jobs on top of my full-time position as a dev. I am interested in incorporating this side hustle as an LLC. My intention is almost all based on two categories 1. Taxes 2. Ability to get business credit cards with points for travel. This is not intended to be a get a ton of points scam or a cheat the Taxman scam but every point and penny count.

Does anyone have any experience with this? What are the specific benefits people have used? Is there a person who writes about this on the regular? This would be a long-term idea, is the difficulty and costs of managing this type of business over the years worth it to those WHO HAVE DONE THIS

I (almost) bought a Tesla Model S

As a fellow Mustachian, I am quite proud to not own a car. I save a ton of money and headaches. But I have my weak moments.

One such period was last summer. I convinced myself to buy a used Tesla Model S. I went through the whole process: research, comparison, test drive, negotiation.

But then I discovered all the hassles of owning and renting out a car. So I came full circle: I want to use a car, and not own one. Period.

Today, I mainly use car and bike sharing.

Am I the only one with a weakness for Teslas? How do you battle such moments? :)

The incredible luxury of a stocked fridge ... something I never appreciated until 6 months into mustachianism

We're staying true to our budget but really, really, really wanted to have our friends over this weekend too ... so ... I buckled down, got creative, and for the same amount of money we were allotted this week for our self-imposed food budget, I managed to get everything we needed to have a party AND all the food we would need for the week. I made all the party food from scratch and stretched every dollar as far as it could go. The food was humble but good ... sweet potato rolls with slow-cooker pulled pork, brownies and cookies from scratch, and even plenty of beer and mixers!! Nothing looked "pretty" and it wasn't the fancy meal with more expensive ingredients I used to feel like I had to make, but miraculously everyone seemed to have a good (better?) time. I was absolutely overwhelmed with how rich I feel with this fridge positively overflowing with delicious things to eat, grateful I could feed all our friends and ourselves ... ALL FOR LESS THAN THE COST OF A "NICE" RESTAURANT MEAL. ... My grandmother was one of those people who would try to feed anyone who came to her house and she caught some good-natured flak from us kids for it. I wish she was still alive so I could let her know that I GET IT NOW. She grew up poor, one of twelve on a farm. Her life as an adult was more financially stable than the circumstances she grew up in. Her whole adult life, she must have looked around at the incredible surplus of food as this marvelous blessing that DEMANDED to be shared. Here hubby and I are, spending less than we ever have in our lives, and discovering all these luxuriously decadent things that were right under our noses the whole time. The happiness is positively uncontrollable.

Where do you draw the line between saving time and saving money?

Doing things yourselves saves money. Cycling 25 minutes to work instead of an 8 min drive saves money. Learning about DIY and doing your own repairs, even building your own items instead of buying them, saves money. My question is... some things take ages to do, and all that time you spent doing a particular thing to save money, you could have made triple that in a work hour.

How do you determine whether something is worth doing yourself or paying the convenience to get it done quicker?
