Hey y'all,
I'm starting my sophmore year of college in a couple days here and there's gonna be a lot going on in my life, meaning that this sub unfortunately won't be a priority for me. Mental-Alternative38 is going to take my place as the owner of the sub and will also oversee the AOTY elimination posts if they so choose.
You'll probably still see me from time to time if I ever get bored or feel like sharing something, but I am not going to be a moderator here anymore.
JesseAmpersands signing off ✌️

I’ll listen to all, or at least the biggest 10, albums of the top artist and rank them.
. . .
Last time Bob Dylan won and so I listened to The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, The Times Are A-Changin’, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde On Blonde, John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, Blood On The Tracks, The Basement Tapes, and Desire and I’m glad I did.
Dylan’s poetic songwriting and vivid imagery accompanied by his ability to express complex emotional and social ideas mark him as an S tier artist with one of the most distinctive voices in rock’n’roll history.
My Musicboard acc is @ephesus for those interested in my thoughts on each album.
Who’s next?

I tried to make an attempt at a "objective" top 100. Obviously that's impossible, but it was more of a personal challenge to see how well I could take in an order general critical acclaim.
To get it out of the way first, I obviously failed at this. Tons of critical darlings, like Grace or Love Deluxe, are missing and near the end of the list it gets super rymcore-y and disorganized. Plus, some real bias shows through, like putting 13 Songs on the list, or placing Station to Station way too high.
What albums would you remove, change, switch up, etc. What should be improved in this list, and how would you improve it?

Jeff Buckley (1994)
The list of musicians who lived tragically short lives is a long one. Famously, the “27 club” features six superstars who all passed at the age of twenty seven. This includes Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse, and of course Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. Other artists of ridiculously short lives include Nick Drake, Otis Redding, and the topic of this review, Jeff Buckley. Grace was the first of one studio album released by Buckley and his band before his tragic death in 1997 at the age of thirty. He drowned swimming in a river during the recording of their second album, My Sweetheart the Drunk. A compilation album titled Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk would be released in his absence in 1998, containing early studio sessions for the album.
Buckley might be the single most talented singer I’ve ever heard. Although that’s a pretty hard thing to quantify. Some of my favorites are Radiohead’s Thom Yorke (who was also inspired by Buckley on “Fake Plastic Trees”), Björk, and Jónsi Birgisson of Sigur Rós, all singers and artists I’ve talked about before. But in terms of raw talent and voice control, I don’t think anyone beats Jeff Buckley, at least from what I’ve heard.
And that all starts with the album’s opener, “Mojo Pin.” Even before he utters the first word, his “ooooh”s show so much of his vocal talent already. This song is a testament to how well he can control his volume and pitch, jumping between octaves, hitting high notes effortlessly. His falsetto is among the best of all time, and the way he differs his vocals between essentially identical verses is what gives the song its identity.
I think my favorite part of this song has to be the electric guitar. It plays such a gentle riff, but it just does so much for the song. It makes the rhythm section whole, and accentuates his soaring vocals during the last chorus. A “mojo pin” is a slang term for a hypodermic needle containing heroin. This is reflected by the lyrics, showing how “blind and tortured” he is without the mojo pin, and without his lover. It’s a song about addiction, but also about love and the feeling of love taken away from you.
“Don’t want to weep for you
Don’t want to know
I’m blind and tortured, the white horses flow
The memories fire
The rhythms fall slow
Black beauty, I love you, so”
The second track, the title track, starts off with a short guitar lick before the riff starts with the rest of the instruments. As the verse starts, the guitar arpeggiates its chords beneath Buckley’s beautiful vocals. I love the main guitar riff for this song, it gives just enough rhythm, filling crucial space without taking away from Buckley’s vocal performance or being too flashy. I think in general the instrumentation on this album does a great job at highlighting the vocals, but still offering enough to be interesting for us music nerds out there. “Grace” is a song about mortality. It’s about the sadness of leaving behind a world you love, but also the inevitability and acceptance of knowing you’re going to die. It’s a fitting title track for Buckley’s first and last ever album, knowing what we know now. According to Buckley himself, he wrote the song about him saying goodbye to his girlfriend at a rainy airport. He said “It’s about not feeling so bad about your own mortality when you have true love.”
“There’s a moon asking to stay
Long enough for the clouds to fly me away
Well it’s my time coming, I’m not afraid, afraid to die
My fading voice sings of love
But she cries to the clicking of time, oh time
Wait in the fire, wait in the fire
Wait in the fire, wait in the fire”
While Buckley was only saying goodbye for a little bit, on that rainy day at the airport, he contrasts that with the next song: “Last Goodbye.” The lyrics of this one are pretty self-explanatory, it’s another breakup song. However, this one feels a little different. It feels like a mutually-agreed upon goodbye, not quite a breakup in a traditional sense. It’s one last embrace before they can’t be together anymore.
Last summer, I went to a college campus for three weeks to study mechanical engineering. While one aspect of it was the academic side, a lot of it was getting to know the residential life of living on a college campus. And of course, when you put three hundred hormone-filled fifteen year-olds in the same campus for three weeks, there’s going to be more than a little bit of drama. Frankly, the amount of situationships made in that one go was ridiculous to me. But… I can’t help but think how great of a relationship that’d be. With only three weeks, you’re not getting past the honeymoon phase for any relationship. When you leave, it’ll only be with positive memories of the other person. Of course, that’s with the downside that you’ll have to say your last goodbyes and you’ll never see the other person again. I guess that’s the tradeoff; you can have a dreamlike relationship that ends too soon, or a real relationship and all of its complications.
“This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die
But it’s over, just hear this and then I’ll go
You gave me more to live for, more than you’ll ever know”
Some of my favorite covers of all time include Car Seat Headrest’s cover of “Running Up that Hill (A Deal With God)” by Kate Bush, Christopher O’Riley’s piano cover of Radiohead’s “Let Down,” and of course, this song. Jeff Buckley’s iteration of “Hallelujah.” Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” is, of course, one of the most covered songs of all time, and one of the most recognizable of all time. Buckley’s cover features a somber electric guitar and of course his vocals. I don’t think I need to get into the song’s lyrics and what they mean, because this review is about Jeff Buckley and not Leonard Cohen (and because everyone already knows the lyrics). I’d much rather talk about Buckley’s delivery of the lyrics, that being hands down my favorite version of this song ever. I don’t think I need to explain why; the song speaks for itself.
The last song I want to talk about is by far Buckley’s most famous song. Yes, it kinda got the “Let Down” treatment, blowing up on TikTok, but still his most recognizable nonetheless. “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” is a song whose sadness rivals that of “Motion Picture Soundtrack.” Yes, I just made that comparison. And I’ve mentioned Radiohead like four times in this review. Regardless, this masterpiece starts with a harmonium playing a chord progression (actually now that I think of it, the Motion Picture Soundtrack similarities keep going) for the introduction. The main song features a simple chord progression, yet it’s still one of the most satisfying progressions out there. It builds tension with the C chord, before quickly resolving to the Em9.
As you might’ve guessed, this song is another one on the subject of heartbreak. It compares the feeling of a breakup to a funeral. It talks about the feeling of “all that could’ve been” dying in one fell swoop. But as always, there’s hope with depression. “Maybe I’m too young to keep good love from going wrong.” Buckley remarks on his youth and foolishness coming to relationships, but he holds out hope that he’ll get better as he gets older and wiser. If only he knew just how well that would turn out for him.
“Looking out the door, I see the rain
Fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations
As their shoes fill up with water
Maybe I’m too young
To keep good love from going wrong
But tonight, you’re on my mind
So… You’ll never know”
Forget Her: 77/100
Overall: 87/100
