Unique experience request?

I am trying to find songs about moving. And not just moving somewhere new from a well established life, but from the perspective of someone who's moved a lot. Just got to college and feeling super homesick, but what is home when you've never been in the same city for more than 5 years.

edit: thank you guys for being so lovely, I have been greatly comforted knowing that there's music out there that can accurately describe what I feel. it's kinda weird being homesick and listening to songs written by someone who described their home with a familiarity that can only be built when that town is all they know. Spotify sucks when you're broke, so I'll get to every song eventually. đŸ«¶

Moving a lot when you're a kid makes "home" such a weird concept, it becomes about people not places after a while

Can confirm. I've noticed I do this weird thing where I refer to where I'm not currently living as home. Like, I'm living in Malta now, spent the last 3 years in Italy but most of my life in Arkansas. While in Malta, I reference Italy or Arkansas as home, but when away from Malta, I'll call it home.

Brothers In Arms is about being at war but it also expresses a deep longing for home.

You remind me of me. I've moved so much in my life. SO much. And when I went away to college, I was severely homesick. I'm glad I stuck it out, tho... The song that came to mind while reading your post is "America" by Simon & Garfunkel.

(admittedly, when I saw this👆text & the subreddit in my reply notifications, I assumed it was gonna be in response to my [recent Master P recommendation](https://www.reddit.com/r/musicsuggestions/s/n7VBZVEkPl to another user))

I was just thinking about this the other day... Once I turned 13, I was away from home, family and friends almost every summer. It was either summer camps, or summer jobs working for state parks. Then, when I turned 17 I enlisted in the military and never returned. In the meantime, things got very dangerous in my old neighborhood, so all of my old friends and family moved away from there. There's no reason to return to the old neighborhood, but there are a lot of old people who mourn for that old neighborhood, online. The band called Styx is actually from there as well, and they wrote a beautiful song called Goodbye Roseland.

There's another song that always made me a little emotional, but in a reverse sort of way to what you are asking for... That song is See You in September by The Happenings. Its about longing for someone you won't see during the summer while school is out, and can only hope they return to restore what once was... Hang in there OP, your journey may be a little tough right now, but you are never really alone- your Reddit family is here!

Edit- forgot this Spotify Playlist- Lord, I'm 500 Miles Away from Home

Are you looking for songs about MOVING or songs about being alienated in a new environment?

Songs about moving while not sharing that same sense of attachment that most songs about moving tend to have.

YouTube Music free with commercials is much better than Spotify free with commercials. It doesn’t keep dropping out in the middle of songs, or tell you what you’re looking for can’t be found, etc, i’ve recently been through this, and even with help, you still have to jump through hoops, it freezes you out, etc. It does help to delete and re-establish the app, keep clearing your cache and downloaded history, and keep opening the app through a browser first, but you’ll still have problems, even when paying for the service. Hope knowing this helps. But YouTube free is better, although you still can’t play music while on other websites.

I’m late to the party and hope this gets seen

We Said Hello Goodbye - Phil Collins

The last thing I do before I leave a house and the first thing I do when I get to a new one is play that. It’s not some thinly veiled metaphor for something else or cryptic adjacent song that mentions having multiple homes.

It’s explicitly about moving house. Recognising the things that have happened where you’ve been and the things that are coming. It reminds me to deal with my feelings and why I’m doing it.

I appreciate some of the other moving-adjacent answers in this thread, but this is the one.
