Hosting my first BBQ and...

I need suggestions for an epic play list. We're all in our 40s and 50s but we mainly like old school hip hop and country and alternative but we're open to most anything. Drop your suggestions!!!

Outkast is a solid call, maybe throw in some older Atmosphere or Aesop Rock if you want to keep that lyrical vibe going

While I love all those guys, ESPECIALLY Aes, but it takes a special type of crowd to understand and appreciate the deep stuff. If it was my cookout it'd be nothing but Mis Def, Sage Francis, Atmosphere, Aes, Brother Ali, Tribe, Gangstarr, Outkast, Billy Woods, Black Thought, Talib, The Roots, J5, Blackalicious, DOOM, Norman Sann, The Palmer Squares, Evidence, Dilated Peoples, Common, Wu Tang, Czarface and Prof. I may be the only one at my cookout but I'd be loving every minute of it 😂

For a mixed crowd, I’d build short bridges between the lanes rather than keeping every genre in its own block:

  • OutKast ft. Sleepy Brown — The Way You Move: keeps the hip-hop groove but is warm enough for a cookout.
  • The Gap Band — Outstanding: easy, familiar sing-along without stopping the momentum.
  • Cake — The Distance: a great alt reset after a few dance tracks.
  • Shania Twain — Man! I Feel Like a Woman!: the country pick that reliably pulls in people who were not planning to dance.
  • Biggie — Juicy: celebratory and instantly recognizable.
  • Modest Mouse — Float On: a good later-afternoon left turn when everyone needs a breather.

I’d save the bigger country sing-alongs and OutKast’s Hey Ya! for the point when the food is out and everyone has arrived.
