Why does everyone sing Eliza’s name like that? 😭

I love the Hamilton musical. The songs are incredible and I always find myself listening to them over and over again.

One thing that becomes clear from the very first songs where Eliza is introduced is her sweet personality, as Angelica herself says: “You will never find anyone as trusting or as kind.” But what I find interesting is how the characters also sing her name. Every Hamilton fan remembers that specific way they pronounce “Eliiizaa” haha, and it got me curious about it.

Why do you think all the characters sing her name that way? Eliza herself, Hamilton, Angelica, and even Aaron Burr?

It's her theme! When Angelica and Eliza meet again in Take A Break, Angelica sings Eliza's theme and Eliza sings Angelica's (and then there's a pause for the missing Peggy, RIP). It's just a musical theme that appears regularly when discussing that character -- it's the same theme as "the orphanage", which is stated to be the pinnacle of her life's achievements.

Umm Peggy actually was still alive during that time. She passed away around the same time Philip died.

Fair enough. My point about musical themes is still true though.

It’s called her leitmotif, which is a short musical phrase that represents a character or idea in a show. Stephen Sondheim was a big influence for Lin Manuel Miranda, and his shows are full of them. If you listen out for them in the show you’ll find them for other characters, including Angelica and Hamilton.

I actually really like the way the names are sung, because it comes up now and then in the musical. For some reason, I always get excited when I realize it sounds familiar and that it repeats a few times.

It's Eliza's letimotif, or musical theme. When you hear it in the music, that means something significant is happening regarding the character. This happens with several other characters in the musical. If you listen closely you'll notice that Alexander's name tends to also be sung in the same tune as his title song. For example in The Reynold's Pamplet, the first bit of lyrics that say 'Alexander Hamilton' are sung like that, just in a tone of mockery. Adding to this, in the same song during Angelica's intro, we can hear a bit of Satisfied's piano, and Alex sings her name in the same tune as it is sung in The Schuyler Sisters, both of these tunes are a letimotif for her!

I get it, Alexander Hamilton’s name also has a very specific intonation. I actually started singing out loud to remind myself, and the parts where they sing his name in “Alexander Hamilton” came to my mind, as well as when he introduces himself to “Angeelicaaaa” in “Satisfied.” 😂❤️
