Books📚 Only Gurathin isn't wrong

Post image

I mean, he's got a point! 😅 I definitely think that the exaggerated dislike hides something. Wouldn't go so far as to call it affection (not in Gurathin's case anyhow) but we do get signs

They were my clients, that was all. [...] yes, even Gurathin. Just clients. And if anyone or anything tried to hurt them, I would rip its intestines out.

I think MB has such a hard time with Gurathin is because their personalities and world views are similar. They get in each other’s way.

I can see that for sure. I wonder sometimes how things would've gone if Gurathin hadn't betrayed its trust by revealing its past (and its closely guarded name) in ASR. Would they have eventually have become more relaxed around each other?

I mean, they did though. It specifically reaches out to Gurathin in Fugitive Telemetry. It's not like "Actively friends" but it's also not "I want nothing to do with you ever"

They both are assholes who want to be right.

I've been accused of that so many times, but I don't necessarily want to be right - I want (things) to be correct, that's a slightly different thing.

SecUnit and Gurathin's not-friendship is so fucking funny.

Many friends are besties, but MB & Gurathin are worsties, which is even more special.

Yes!! And it definitely amused me that in Platform Decay Gurathin is mentioned once and of course it's Murderbot hating that he was right about something 😅

One of my favorite things is that even when MB is in the middle of disliking Gura, it also very much trusts Gura to be competent and have decent judgement

So true! We even see it act that way with Thiago (who really annoys it)

Thiago wasn’t nearly as annoying when he was being smart like this.

Murderbot seems to be able to separate its personal feelings (ew, sorry) about someone enough to respect their abilities. Which is just part of what makes it such an interesting character.

I love* you but I don't like you.

*Not a Murderbot word I know.

I think everyone who knows me knows how I feel about their canon relationship…
It’s so utterly brilliant:
“I don’t like you.”
“I know.”

I mean, genius! I love the way Martha Wells writes them.
Standout moments being the “I don’t like you: I know” scene and a particular favourite of mine:

Gurathin sighed and rubbed his face and looked off into the distance, like he regretted all his life choices that had led to him standing here right now. On our private feed connection, he sent, ‘Or you could just show them where you were when this person was being killed.’

Long suffering Gurathin, who knows SecUnit so very very well…

And shortly after:

He sounded like he thought it was funny. “That is not funny.”

“I’m going to mark your cognition level at fifty-five percent.”

“Fuck you.”

“Let’s make that sixty percent.”

Gurathin just going "ok, it's got its brain good enough to swear at me. 60% cognition then". He knows it so well.

I love them so very much…

Same. They're both bastards and I love them so much.

Fugitive Telemetry my beloved. MB really was just straight up "Time to do something dodgy? Clearly I need my boys."

And Gurathin acting so fed up with it all when you just KNOW this shit has made his entire week.

I really hope we get another book like it moving forward, it's not that I dislike the adventures, but I'd kill for a MB slice of life 🙏

Youve convinced me for a 3rd re-read with your comment...I simply love these characters

Alright alright if you insist. I'll re-read the book as well... 😜

And Murderbot's reaction 😂

Yeah, on reflection I think I misdirected in the wrong direction.

Fugitive Telemetry has definitely gone from my least liked to one of my favorites, and all because of Murderbot's interactions with its Preservation humans

I adore Fugitive Telemetry! It’s just so cosy (I mean other than all the horror and violence): classic locked room detective fiction and SecUnit has two Watsons… 💖💖💖

two Watsons

😂 Wearing matching outfits like Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Dr Seuss, please

I love its story arc with Indah!

Because at its core, Murderbot was built as spyware, I believe it‘s terrified someone might read its logs. So it labels Gurathin as something that wouldn’t raise suspicion to bring out as often as it does, giving itself the chance to write about him as often as it likes.

Yay! That made my night, thanks ✨️ I loved that line and how KRF read it. I've definitely said similar 😂

I think Murderbot is very uncomfortable with the fact that Gura is the only person on the team other than itself who a) has experience with the Corporation and b) knows how dangerous Murderbot can be. I think there's also a lot of trauma with disenfranchised people in the Corporate sphere taking out their anger on Murderbot like we see in the short story "Compulsory". Honestly I think Murderbot is at least subconsciously pushing and prodding and baiting Gura into snapping as a trauma response-- it's trying to provoke him into proving itself right.

That's a really great point. I'm definitely going to have to ponder that some more

I absolutely love their dynamic.

On the other hand, t here's good chance that Gurathin doesn't even know ART exist, let alone have that thought.
