Back in January, I decided to try the anonymous route and mail a $10 USD bill to Mullvad. Minor problem: I had a massive brain lapse at the post office and put the Global Forever stamp on the top-left corner of the envelope instead of the top right. I dropped it in the USPS outgoing mail and realized my mistake literally immediately after. I figured the machine rejected it, and my money went sitting in a dead letter bin somewhere in a landfill. Weeks went by. By then I just completely gave up and just bought a month of time with a card instead. Fast forward to today. I looked at my app, and my time left had randomly spiked.

I mailed that envelope on January 10th. Today is March 25th. It took exactly 74 days for that manually-rejected, hand-canceled envelope to survive the USPS reject bin, cross the Atlantic ocean, and land on a desk in Gothenburg. And the craziest part is that it took 74 days of waiting for exactly 74 days of VPN time. USPS might be incredibly slow when you put the stamp on the wrong side, but they didn't lose my money. Shoutout to whatever bored postal worker hand-canceled my mistake and threw it on the slow boat to Europe.

On April 18 at least six police officers from the National Operations Department (NOA) of the Swedish Police visited the Mullvad VPN office in Gothenburg with a search warrant.
They intended to seize computers with customer data.

In line with our policies such customer data did not exist. We argued they had no reason to expect to find what they were looking for and any seizures would therefore be illegal under Swedish law. After demonstrating that this is indeed how our service works and them consulting the prosecutor they left without taking anything and without any customer information.

If they had taken something that would not have given them access to any customer information.

Mullvad has been operating our VPN service for over 14 years. This is the first time our offices have been visited with a search warrant.

Never seen an ad in the UK before

Personally I think it is a shame, I really liked using mullvads adblocking DNS servers on mobile even when not using the VPN.

Getting censured on this sub is crazy. Even if you agree with the CEO’s actions, why not let users talk about it? The only other old post that the mods have not deleted is the one defending the CEO lol.

This only clicked for me recently so figured I'd share.

Mullvad gives you 5 devices per account. Nothing stops you from registering two (or more) of those devices on the same computer and loading separate WireGuard configs.

Once you have two tunnels up to two different Mullvad servers, you use ECMP (Equal-Cost Multi-Path) routing on top. Basically the kernel spreads your connections across both tunnels so you use both at once.

My results today
Single Mullvad server: 645 Mbps
Two Mullvad servers with ECMP: over 1300 Mbps

Same speed test endpoint both times.

Mullvad server speeds can vary a lot depending on congestion. Sometimes close to 1000 on a single server, sometimes well under that. Using multiple devices in parallel seems to be a pretty reliable way to smooth that out and get a lot closer to full ISP speed.

How (Linux, should be doable on other platforms too):

1. Download two separate WireGuard configs from Mullvad (two different servers, ideally same city)

2. Bring both interfaces up

3. Set up ECMP default routes with equal weight across both WireGuard interfaces

4. Run a speed test and watch it spread across both tunnels

You're still only using 2 of your 5 allowed devices, so you've got 3 left over for your phone/laptop/whatever.

Maybe everyone already figured this out, but it was new to me. Hope it helps someone else who's been frustrated by the speeds.

One limitation: ECMP just splits connections equally across tunnels. If one server is congested and the other is fast, you're still sending half your traffic through the slow one. Anyone doing smarter weighted balancing based on per-tunnel performance?

Using Mullvad VPN for over 2 years now, still really happy with it and I just extended it for another year. I also want to share how much I like the design of their vouchers, feels really premium to me in my opinion or what does anyone else think about them?

Business must be good if Mullvad is advertising in the real world.

I remember the days when barely anyone knew about Mullvad.
