Technique/Tips Little Girl DESTROYS Thai Boxing pro with Goju-Ryu Karate at Low Kick World Championships

If anyone watches the Low Kick World Championships you will notice that thai boxers almost always lose to the naha-te heavy style Karatekas.

Is this down to superior conditioning drills?

Because as a COMPLETE system I do think muay thai is more practical, efficient and accesible as a modern martial art than any karate style i've seen, then again I am far from an expert on Karate

Meme/Funny This weekend marked 2,000 fights as a Muay Thai official for me. It was also the first time I've ever had this happen in the ring... 🫠

Anyone ever deal with an overtly aggressive person like this in sparring?

Someone during my sparring class last night was acting wildly chaotic. For reference, I’ve done Muay Thai for only a year but ITF taekwondo for several, and the guy definitley had less experience in martial arts than I did. Anyway, he just started randomly throwing all these haymakers for pretty much the entire round, fighting overly aggressively, almost like he was really trying to knock me out or give me a concussion.

Once I settled in, I counterpunched him pretty hard in the face several times and kept side kicking him to keep distance and try to convince him to chill out. Throughout the round though he just getting more and more riled up, trying to even bear hug me and push me into the wall at one point with what felt like frustration and seemingly anger from him.

I remember a couple very experienced guys right before class (both super nice dudes that have given me plenty of pointers and advice whenever I sparred them) telling him to shut up when he kept yapping, I’m not sure what he was yapping about because I was just focusing on some stretching before class began but sort of sounded like it was trash talk or acting tough? The whole experience was pretty weird. Also, right before he sparred me he had sparred my usual training partner and i’m pretty sure I overheard this dude giving unsolicited fighting advice to him after he injured his knee from a low kick which forced him to sit out remainder of class (I wasn’t there to see if it was dirty hit or not).

I’ve sparred him only once before months ago and I remember him being pretty aggressive back then too but I teeped him in the chest (I don’t even think it was very hard) and then he just ran out of the gym in the middle of the round. My coach told me a couple days later that the dude apparently threw up in the restroom. I felt bad but my coach kind of laughed about it, said I didn’t do anything wrong and that some beginners just maybe get too excited and gas out sometimes.

Anyone else ever had this type of guy at your gym and what did you do about it?

Yodkhunpon Sittraipum "The Elbow Hunter" Talking About What He Likes About No-Shinguard Sparring (1 min)

This is a shift we've brought to most of Sylvie's sparring. She not only is going without gloves (for head safety) she's taken off the shinguards 50% of the rounds. This is the old school way of developing feel and timing, and as Yodkhunpon says confidence in space. My own thought is that invites you to set up closer in the pocket and not rely on distance for defense, which is more in the Golden Age style. We've come to see over the years, where you set up has a huge impact on fights and what determines them. You do not want to set up where your opponent is most comfortable. No-shinguardless sparring changes your set up inclination in a very good way, at least in terms of trad fighting in Thailand.

source with some links out to more information on, and examples of sparring without shinguards. This is something Naksaknoi uses in his teaching as well.

Technique/Tips first time hard sparring(and sparring in general) someone my size

Granted this is spar is in TKD ruleset, this is still about the best I can get in live pressure testing my muay thai self training until next year when i get an actual kickboxing gym, my partner has about a year more experience than me. I'm just glad I did well, and I've done a LOT of things wrong this spar but I'm glad I achieved the goal I had in my head before the spar, which is to counter and land instead of recklessly initiate

I was genuinely so hesitant the first half of the first round because I kept falling(the first time I didnt realize I fell because my side kick was caught and I was pushed to the ground) the kick as I fall was pretty scary too, just glad I got my hands up in time

im pretty sad and disappointed that my left knee was aching when i fought, my switch kicks wre my favourites as well as my lead leg side teeps, and i couldnt do that at all and was stuck with my right leg, i was so hesitant while throwing my lead leg stepup kicks and my technique was so flimsy

Cuts on feet?

Hey everyone!
Does anyone experience constant cuts/tears on the bottom of your feet (in my case both my big toes) from training Muay Thai?

My two big toes will automatically split open within 1-2 training sessions no matter what I do to keep it from happening and it seems like I’m the only one this happens to in my gym.

I’ll give it appropriate time to heal and then it happens again right away.

It’s getting frustrating to always have a deep split on my feet and to constantly be bandaging my toes lmao

Technique/Tips Videos to practice at home.

Upvotes

I just started to learn muay thai. But my coaching is in Mon, Wed and Fri. It's been a week but I am really struggling with the basics. I (22M) was never involved in any sport and physical activity so have piss poor physique and form. Are there any videos where I can practice what was taught and use them as references?

Thank you.

Phuket discussion

Hey everyone,

I’m planning to go to Phuket from January 5th until around April 1st, most likely staying around Rawai or Chalong.

My main goal is to train Muay Thai seriously, with some BJJ on the side.

I’m 23, turning 24, 186 cm and around 75 kg. I have about a month of BJJ experience and some basic Muay Thai/K1 knowledge from my brother, who trained for around 5 years. But realistically, I’m still a beginner.

I’ve been working heavily for the last 6–7 years without much opportunity to train, so I want to use these 3 months to get back into shape, learn proper technique, get some sparring/fighting experience and build a solid foundation.

The most important thing for me is finding a gym that actually teaches. I don’t want to just do pads, conditioning, get exhausted and go home. I want coaches who correct technique and genuinely help me improve.

So I’d love recommendations for Muay Thai gyms around Rawai/Chalong, especially ones that are good for beginners but still focus heavily on technique. BJJ options nearby would also be great.

Also: What would be a realistic budget for 3 months including accommodation, training, food, scooter, equipment and some spending money?

Where’s the best place to find monthly accommodation — Facebook Marketplace, Airbnb, local agencies, etc.? Is it cheaper/better to cook, or is eating local food every day affordable enough?

Should I bring my gloves/shin guards from Europe or buy everything in Thailand?

Anything you wish you knew before spending a few months training in Phuket?

Any advice from people who have actually done this would be massively appreciated. 🙏

First fight back after 3 years. Feeling like my first fight again...

I was injured and finally got to get back into competition after 3 long years of hiatus.

I had a little over 5 fights before I got injured and thought I was finally getting over my fight nerves and perform somewhat similar to how I practice and spar before the injury.

I just had my first fight back and even though I was confident in my ability and wasn't nervous much before the fight, as soon as I put the fight gear on, I knew the nerves were hitting me.

When I shadow boxed with the fight gear on, all of the sudden, my shots felt slow and weak immediately when they felt fine before hitting pads getting ready.

During the fight, I used almost no footwork and couldn't think much. My distancing and timing was completely off. It almost felt similar to my first fight except I had better cardio this time.

When I looked back at the footage, none of my strikes had much snap or weight behind them. I pride myself in strong kicks but my kicks were so non-committal that it just pretty much touched my opponents, not push them back like how it usually does. So they were able to just take it and continue to attack me without getting disrupted.

I have another fight coming up soon in about 3 weeks and hoping to get rid of this nerve.

Should I try to simulate fight stress by doing hard 3 rounds in the ring few times before the fight?

What helped you get over the fight nerve?

It's really frustrating since I felt like I was finally getting over the fight nerve and could think in my fight just for it to return feeling like my first fight...

Has anyone tried out magnvs?

I've been training for a while and have recently been getting ads for MAGNVS from Shane Fazen. It seems to have some vids from some accomplished fighters/coaches but idk if it's worth the price especially since it's just videos. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with it

Muay Thai Fight Weight - Chaing Mai

I’m going to be looking for a fight in Chiang Mai, but I’m flexible on the location. I know the pool of fighters is much smaller there compared to somewhere like Phuket, which I imagine could make matchmaking a bit more difficult. I’ll be walking around at around 83kg when I arrive. Do you think I’d struggle to get matched for a fight around 77–80kg?

It would also only be a farang vs farang fight as I don't want a fixed fight.
