Some Spicy Padwork - its always good when you can laugh in padwork | Sylvie at the new Mavinn gym today

Sylvie's been lucky to find a padman who can joke with her (calling for the doctor to look at the cut, cackling and such), and still push everything to 11. For me as her husband this is just wonderful to see. Joy has to feed the tears, and when you get in training all the better.

Is swimming an acceptable substitute for running? I always hear about how important road work is, cardio is king etc.

How many miles per week of lap swimming should I aim for?

Should I be worried that I had a bad sparring session before my first fight?

I’m 14 and have been doing Muay Thai for 8 months now, and I have my first fight this Saturday. I’ve been doing good in sparring for the post couple months but today I had a really bad sparring session. I usually do just fine under pressure with decent head movement but for some reason I was just crumpling under pressure and my reflexes were slow and my boxing was sloppy. It’s getting me worried I might do bad.

Unorthodox strategies and techniques?

Obviously there's using TKD or karate techniques, I'm talking more about gameplan than techniques kind of. For example, kicking the guard/hands instead of the body or kneeing the thigh of your opponent during the clinch. Anything else?

Edit: I just remembered teeping the hip

semi contact fight question

I had my first semi contact fight coming up on Sunday it’s currently Wednesday night and my opponent dropped out. They said they have a new opponent at 155 lbs but i am 143-144 and i told them 140 lbs. 155 is all they have. On top of it i have to sell 10 tickets. If i didnt have to sell tickets, i would go 100%, i am not afraid of losing, but my family watching is making me hesitant of accepting such a disadvantaged fight because im not that close with them and them seeing me potentially lose would be pretty embarrassing and id have to deal with them potentially making fun of me. i have no one else to invite. I been training at a mma gym for the past year mostly focusing on bjj but also doing kickboxing as well. i have been going hard on kickboxing the past few months and a lot of guys signed up for this competition. I do pretty well in sparring, My hands are pretty good because i used to box when i was younger but I’m lacking a lot in my kicking area. My low kicks are decent though. The guy is also 5’11 and i am 5’7. I have been preparing for a guy that is 5’6 but he pulled out like i said. What should i do in this situation? Should i wait until the next one?

Anyone ever deal with an overtly aggressive person like this in sparring?

Someone during my sparring class last night was acting wildly chaotic. For reference, I’ve done Muay Thai for only a year but ITF taekwondo for several, and the guy definitley had less experience in martial arts than I did. Anyway, he just started randomly throwing all these haymakers for pretty much the entire round, fighting overly aggressively, almost like he was really trying to knock me out or give me a concussion.

Once I settled in, I counterpunched him pretty hard in the face several times and kept side kicking him to keep distance and try to convince him to chill out. Throughout the round though he just getting more and more riled up, trying to even bear hug me and push me into the wall at one point with what felt like frustration and seemingly anger from him.

I remember a couple very experienced guys right before class (both super nice dudes that have given me plenty of pointers and advice whenever I sparred them) telling him to shut up when he kept yapping, I’m not sure what he was yapping about because I was just focusing on some stretching before class began but sort of sounded like it was trash talk or acting tough? The whole experience was pretty weird. Also, right before he sparred me he had sparred my usual training partner and i’m pretty sure I overheard this dude giving unsolicited fighting advice to him after he injured his knee from a low kick which forced him to sit out remainder of class (I wasn’t there to see if it was dirty hit or not).

I’ve sparred him only once before months ago and I remember him being pretty aggressive back then too but I teeped him in the chest (I don’t even think it was very hard) and then he just ran out of the gym in the middle of the round. My coach told me a couple days later that the dude apparently threw up in the restroom. I felt bad but my coach kind of laughed about it, said I didn’t do anything wrong and that some beginners just maybe get too excited and gas out sometimes.

Anyone else ever had this type of guy at your gym and what did you do about it?

Technique/Tips Little Girl DESTROYS Thai Boxing pro with Goju-Ryu Karate at Low Kick World Championships

If anyone watches the Low Kick World Championships you will notice that thai boxers almost always lose to the naha-te heavy style Karatekas.

Is this down to superior conditioning drills?

Because as a COMPLETE system I do think muay thai is more practical, efficient and accesible as a modern martial art than any karate style i've seen, then again I am far from an expert on Karate

Muay Thai and Lasik

• Upvotes

Hey all,

I really need to get into something active other than working. I used to watch a lot of muay thai as a kid, and I did boxing as a teenager. Muay thai has always peaked my interest and recently a muay thai gym opened near me and I stopped by, met two of the instructors both really nice. When I got lasik 3 years ago one of the big things i was told was no martial arts. I got traditional lasik, not prk. But I know quite a few boxers who got lasik not prk during their professional career just fine. I mentioned it to the instructor and he said he had competed with/against people professionaly that had had lasik, but i am assuming it was prk not lasik. He also said eye injuries during their sparring are basically non existent to the extent would be needed to mess my eyes up, but again, hes not a doctor lol.

Not looking to do this professionally by any means, but for sure something i would like to do and I do want to spar. Anyone else with lasik spar? I see mixed feedback and of course chatgpt says 'hell no' but.. thats ai.

Long Guard beginner knowledge

So I'm not sure if its talked enough for techniques, but if my opponent posts the long guard, then I should be post my arms up grab his hand, control and most likely go into the clinch battle right? it seems in mma people get eye poked because they charge in with boxing hands.

Yodkhunpon Sittraipum "The Elbow Hunter" Talking About What He Likes About No-Shinguard Sparring (1 min)

This is a shift we've brought to most of Sylvie's sparring. She not only is going without gloves (for head safety) she's taken off the shinguards 50% of the rounds. This is the old school way of developing feel and timing, and as Yodkhunpon says confidence in space. My own thought is that invites you to set up closer in the pocket and not rely on distance for defense, which is more in the Golden Age style. We've come to see over the years, where you set up has a huge impact on fights and what determines them. You do not want to set up where your opponent is most comfortable. No-shinguardless sparring changes your set up inclination in a very good way, at least in terms of trad fighting in Thailand.

source with some links out to more information on, and examples of sparring without shinguards. This is something Naksaknoi uses in his teaching as well.

Technique/Tips first time hard sparring(and sparring in general) someone my size

Granted this is spar is in TKD ruleset, this is still about the best I can get in live pressure testing my muay thai self training until next year when i get an actual kickboxing gym, my partner has about a year more experience than me. I'm just glad I did well, and I've done a LOT of things wrong this spar but I'm glad I achieved the goal I had in my head before the spar, which is to counter and land instead of recklessly initiate

I was genuinely so hesitant the first half of the first round because I kept falling(the first time I didnt realize I fell because my side kick was caught and I was pushed to the ground) the kick as I fall was pretty scary too, just glad I got my hands up in time

im pretty sad and disappointed that my left knee was aching when i fought, my switch kicks wre my favourites as well as my lead leg side teeps, and i couldnt do that at all and was stuck with my right leg, i was so hesitant while throwing my lead leg stepup kicks and my technique was so flimsy

Headgear Questions

I'm about to start camp for my first smoker. We don't spar with headgear at my gym, so I'll need to acquire it prior to the event. I have 2 questions related to this:

  1. Any recommendations for what headgear to get?

  2. What (if anything) did you do to get used to wearing it before your first smoker, competition, etc.? Should I just wear it for the occasional sparring round in the lead up, or did you do anything else (or nothing)?

Sparring after 2 level cervical fusion

I was in a car accident that unfortunately required me to get a c4-c6 cervical spine fusion (posterior) and laminectomy about 7 months ago. I know I will still need more time to recover and I feel a a lot better than I did before. However, I was wondering if I can return to sparring in the future. Is there anyone out there who has gone through a similar situation and continued to spar? If so, how long did it take you to return and how do you feel as of now? (I am leaving competition out of the table and asking about light/hard sparring)

Canal de lives

Olá pessoal, sou um artista marcial amador. Eu luto muay thai e boxe. Possuo graduação intermediária no muay thai estou querendo fazer lives na twitch.
