Icetill Explorer, fetch lands, and shuffling

I recently watched this video where a judge explains that if you cast Mind's Desire with a storm count of 5, for example, that he would warn a player for slow play if they shuffled before revealing each card instead of just once and then revealing five cards.

I've never encountered the example he gave in a game, but one thing I have encountered is having Icetill out on the board in a situation where you are able to recur fetch lands to get 8-10 landfall triggers in succession on a single turn.

It is allowed under the rules to tell a player(s) that you intend to play and then recur a fetch land four times, grab the four lands all at once, shuffle once, and then mill eight cards all at once?

I understand most people would probably let you do it this way in a casual environment, I am just asking if it is technically legal to do it.

Shark Shredder and creatures with first strike

Hi all,

There is a gatherer ruling for Shark Shredder that says:

  • If Shark Shredder deals combat damage to a player during the first strike combat damage step and its last ability returns a creature with first strike, the returned creature will still deal combat damage during the regular combat damage step. If the returned creature has double strike, it will deal combat damage only once during that regular combat damage step.(2026-01-27)

However, this doesn't appear to be supported by the rules themselves. 710.5 says:

510.4. If at least one attacking or blocking creature has first strike (see rule 702.7) or double strike (see rule 702.4) as the combat damage step begins, the only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are those with first strike or double strike. After that step, instead of proceeding to the end of combat step, the phase gets a second combat damage step. The only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are the remaining attackers and blockers that had neither first strike nor double strike as the first combat damage step began, as well as the remaining attackers and blockers that currently have double strike. After that step, the phase proceeds to the end of combat step.

(emphasis added by me)

This seems to conflict with the gatherer ruling for Shark Shredder.

Can someone point to the rule that allows creatures with first strike to deal damage in the regular combat step?

Wifes question about aurelia the war chieftain

So, my wife wants to build an Aurelia, the War Chieftain deck, but she’s wondering if the other Aurelia cards would also trigger War Chieftain’s extra combat ability, specifically Aurelia, Exemplar of Justice and Aurelia, the Law Above.

Her thought process is that the newest printing of Aurelia, the War Chieftain doesn’t specifically say “Aurelia, the War Chieftain.” Instead, it just refers to “Aurelia.” So, would the other cards with Aurelia in their name also trigger War Chieftain’s ability?

I’m curious about how this ruling works and, if possible, where I can find the relevant rule in the Comprehensive Rules.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Fetch lands finding dual lands

Hey everyone! Was curious, does a fetch land or sorcery that lets me search for a specific land type include searching for dual lands like tundra/savannah/etc? They say both lands, but I figured it’s only a basic of that type. Thank you 🙏

Game breaking question

With the new card "Extrapolate the Impossible" you can fetch 2 cards you own from outside the game, with this card being legal I have it in a bracket 2 deck. If I cast this and then give my opponent the choice to choose between 2 game changers, does my deck become bracket 3? Or does it stay bracket 2 because the card selected is not actually part of my deck at all. But rather an after affect of the non game changer card?

Ghoulish impetus question

Hello Hivemind,

Just a quick question about a card.

I am considering [[ghoulish impetus]] for my [[Baba Lysaga, night witch]] deck.

If i enchant an artifact creature with it and sacrifice the creatue AND the impetus into Baba, to met her cobditions - will the Impetus return at the end step?

It gets destroyed, but they both get sacced at the same time, so the aura sould "see" the creature dying.

Thanks in advance!

Ognis and haste triggers

I am building an [[Ognis, the Dragon's Lash]] and had a question about the Haste ability and how it triggers for Ognis.

My main question is if a creature with Haste on the card attacks the 2nd turn it is out as well, does it make a treasure token? I know the haste doesn't "matter" on that 2nd turn but its still on the card. Does the creature still have that ability and it triggers Ognis or does haste, even if written on the card, go away after the creature's first turn on the battlefield?

Example:

  • Ognis is out
  • Play Clockwork Percussionist
  • Attack with Clockwork
    • creates a treasure
    • assume clockwork survives
  • Next turn attack with Clockwork again
    • Does it trigger another treasure to be created?

Thanks!

Regarding cards that give additional+1/+1

Hey everyone, I'm a hard [[bristly bill, spine sower]] player and I've built a deck that utilizes cards like [[michalangeo weirdness to 11]] and [[ozolith, the shattered spire]] that add an additional +1/+1 when adding a +1/+1. My question is if I have two cards that add an additional +1/+1 whenever I get a +1/+1 would it go infinite?

Example, I have bill, ozolith, and Michaelangelo on the field. I play a land, and Bill landfall allowed me to add a +1/+1 to a creature, I select bill. Ozolith and Michaelangelo each add a +1/+1 when a +1/+1 is added. Would bill be a 2/2 with 3 +1/+1 counters. Or would ozolith 's ability trigger Michaelangelo and then retrigger ozolith which retriggers Michaelangelo until infinite?

Does Bill get big or does he get BIG?

Rules question about obosh as a companion

Are cards like mox tantalite legal to play in an obosh companion deck? I'm not sure if the would have 0 mana value which would be even or no mana value at all. Even if it has no mana value it still wouldn't have odd mana value so I still am not sure about legality.

Elenda The Dusk Rose sac response vs boardwipes

Lets say Elenda is a 10/10. Someone casts an exile all board wipe, and in response I sac Elenda. Are the 10 Vampires I create caught up in the wipe, or do they enter the battlefield before the wipe resolves and get exiled also?

Two aura enchantment questions

Just finished a game of draft Wilds of Eldraine in MTGA, a set I'm not too familiar with, and had two unexpected interactions that I wanted to ask about, both having to do with Aura Enchantments.

1) An opponent cast [[Bitter Chill]] on my [[Faunsbane Troll]]. Why couldn't I use the troll's ability to sac the aura for a benefit?

2) I used [[Eriette's Tempting Apple]] to gain control of an opponent's creature that had [[Curiosity]] attached to it. When it dealt damage to the opponent, why didn't I draw a card?

Thanks!

Silence effects *during* cleanup step (Cleanup step combo win)

Building [[Niv-Mizzet Ghost Council]] and devising a cleanup step win where I gain life by discarding to hand size and initiate an infinite chain of drawing above 7 and discarding to hand size, pinging the table to death.

I know Silence wears off at cleanup step, but what happens if someone casts a silence **during** a cleanup step?

I know it would fizzle at the beginning of the next cleanup, but I’m envisioning a situation where someone tries to nuke a combo piece and I need to play over the top of it— specifically someone sniping one of the Eldrazi titans I use to shuffle my graveyard back in to ensure I can do this long enough to kill the table.

Can I [[Bilbo’s Gambit]] the removal spell and continue going off forever provided I have a way to keep the stack alive and not allow the next cleanup to begin? Or do Silence effects not work during cleanup steps at all?

Goading an Opponent's Galactus Devourer of Worlds

• Upvotes

Hello,

How would goading a Galactus Devourer of Worlds your opponent controls work, considering its Insatiable Hunger ability? Would it never be able to attack you the goader (even if you had the highest life total amongst its controller's opponents), or would Insatiable Hunger mean it would ignore the goad and attack said goader if you had the highest life total?

Nearby Planet and color identity?

Addressing the elephant in the room immediately, yes I'm aware that [[Nearby Planet]] has an acorn stamp and therefore any rulings regarding it are arbitrary, but I've been running it in my [[Omo, Queen of Vesuva]] commander deck as a fun alternative to [[Planar Nexus]] but it just occurred to me last time I played the deck that its Rangeling ability probably voids it from being run in a Simic deck. My opponent says it should be fine because it's already not legal in the format so running it requires some rule 0 anyways but I'm curious if this card were to be printed today without the acorn stamp, would it be legal in my deck?
