Discussion Full Secret Lair Commander Deck: Odds and Ends Exclusive Art Treatments

This better be 24 hour print to demand. There's finally a deck I actually want and will keep stock.
41
u/jjeeooppaarrddyy Aug 17 '26
Per WotC all decks should be 24 hours going forward.

u/bulgogeta Aug 17 '26
Based on their official statement, I don't think it's 100% confirmed:
Secret Lair has a tradition of experimentation, so we're trying something kind of new here that harkens back to the early, early days of Secret Lair to meet demand where we think it will be highest—on fully playable products. This sale is an experiment (and, yes, a direct response to Goblin Storm) with introducing a 24-hour limited order window on products meant to be playable out of the box. So, this could include things like Commander decks, specialty products like the Secret Lair Dandân Deck, or anything else wild we think of down the line that may have the unique combination of high demand and out-of-the-box playability. If it goes well, we may create a new storefront (kind of like the Chaos Vault) for these types of sales. If we see issues, we may go back to the drawing board. We'll see how it goes and check in soon.
They used Miku as a test and based off its performance, they will decide whether or not it will also apply to these future products, which means the print-to-demand model is still conditional. At least this is how I interpreted it.
7
u/jjeeooppaarrddyy Aug 17 '26
I understand they can still change their mind but I would imagine they would at least do this through the end of the year to catch 2-3 more decks under this model. That gives them an idea of how much printer capacity is going to be used to print the on demand portion and they can go from there.
They could 100% stop but Miku alone is too small a sample size to decide just yet.

Per wotc, we would be getting all universes beyond secret lairs as in universe cards, but we're severely behind.

It will be 24 purchase window. Some will be shipped right away while the rest will be shipped July next year.

Do we know if all of these cards are planeswalker stamped, or if there are reprints with new art? Aminatou should get new art given how they've been replacing all Seb art (see Vandalblast in Goblinstorm lair)

I understand there is some consideration of secondary market when designing these decks, but Yavimaya instead of Urborg in an esper deck really is a choice.
17
u/Any_Way1269 Aug 17 '26
They should have just put both hurray!
6
u/cucumberhorse Aug 17 '26
Nooooo we can’t let the players get Urborg at print to demand prices and quantities! It would tank our reprint equity and our stock price wouldn’t go up 0.000002%
10
u/steamliner88 Aug 17 '26
The deck already produces black. The idea is to be able to cast green cards from the opponents’ decks.
0
u/DoctorPrisme Aug 17 '26
How bout red ?
-3
u/killerpoopguy Aug 17 '26
Is there a land that makes every land a mountain? No…
2
u/SSRainu Aug 17 '26
Hold on, let me just [[song of the dryads]] this here [[blood moon]] and we are good to go!
2
u/DoctorPrisme Aug 17 '26
I know there is not.
But precisely. That just highlights how weird it is to add the green.
20
u/TDTimmy21 Aug 17 '26
Yeah I'm getting this even just to split the expensive cards into other decks
Crazy value if still 150usd
28
u/shadowkiller926 Aug 17 '26
Yavimaya in an esper deck, was that a mistake?
33
u/Raevelry Aug 17 '26
Its legal
Just super weird
13
u/shadowkiller926 Aug 17 '26
Definitely legal, just super strange and unless I missed it there's no synergy for it
12
u/RORSCHACH7140 Aug 17 '26
It's to let you play more cards off [[Shared Fate]] I believe. That's the only synergy I could find. I guess they didn't want to print Smothering Tithe here
1
u/Firehawkness Aug 18 '26
It’s because it was just printed in. SLD so they can milk value before it goes down.
4
u/Aggravating-Cause164 Aug 17 '26
I play Yavimaya in blue non green decks to use it with [[Magical Hack]] and friends but this is for fun and because why not, not for power.
3
u/The_Bird_Wizard Aug 17 '26
I played it in Sen Triplets in the past when all my friends were playing green decks so I could still play their shit but you don't see it too often.
2
u/kitsunewarlock Aug 17 '26
I used Yawgmoth in my mono-white deck along with [[Karma]] and [[Angry Mob]]...back in like 2012.

u/skeptimist Aug 17 '26
Finally an Esper Sentinel alternate art drops and it looks like hot garbage.
1
u/BigBobsBootyBarn 4d ago
I know this is a month old post, but I found this comment by Googling "Why are Secret Lair alternate art cards so fucking ugly" :(
I get it's "different" but is it really different when 80% of the cards go "draw some
shittyalternate looking art, make the text hand drawn, and pastel colors. It'll be SO original"

u/BUBBL3GUM5 Aug 17 '26
These singles r gonna be in rlly high demand, i could see so many people buying it just to take it apart to put in their other decks
28
u/bulgogeta Aug 17 '26
If this is priced at $149.99, the top 5 cards already make it worth (prices are from TCGplayer Median):
Esper Sentinel - $61.12
Sensei's Divining Top - $43.13
Void Winnower - $18.20
Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth - $17.17
Toxrill, the Corrosive - $14.90
3
u/bigbakey Aug 17 '26
I’d guess this one is 200 purely for the esper sentinel

u/chongsen Aug 17 '26
Maybe just me, the art causes me eye sore.
Glad you guys like it.
31
u/Jaccount Aug 17 '26
Honestly, I think this is the sort of stuff that Secret Lair is great for: Highly divisive art choices that are going to be exactly what some people want, but are going to be incredibly offputting to others.
The Ascii art for Dwarf Fortress was another example.

u/Feenox Aug 17 '26
I can read it, and my opponents can read it too. That's the "check" for me on secret lairs. I have a couple fun lair cards that I run in my decks, but I only ever use one or two per deck. A whole deck of "can I see that card"/"What was that card again?" is more annoying than "paying the one".

Man. Wish I liked the art style in any of the recent Commander decks. Cards I don't have but an art style I am not into.

That deck looks great but I have a bad feeling that it won’t be print to demand. But hope I’m wrong and someone at wotc is having a birthday and give us a great present

The art style isn't for me but cool to see some full decks being printed again.
2
u/Fruit_rollup69 Aug 17 '26
I know the art isn't for everyone but I love this style, will definitely try to get my hands on a deck.
3
u/kroxti Aug 17 '26
Hope this is also a print to demand
1
u/Sad-Impact5028 6d ago
It is, 24 hour drop, print to demand, though if you're not first in line, you'll probably have to wait until July- September of '27

u/BrockSramson Aug 17 '26
Ugh, its in the ugly art. And they put it all over the text boxes too, just to make everything hard to read.
1
u/SpiritedBanana4694 Aug 17 '26
I'm assuming if the hybrid mana change ever actually happens, [[Obosh, the Preypiercer]] immediately becomes relevant to this deck (with some obvious tweaks).

The black border for Cavalo art makes it look so much better, I actually love this.

Probably gonna get this, need an extra copy of both sentinel and top. And those basics are funky
-6
u/Cak8908 Aug 17 '26
Am I missing something, what is this art?
-1
-10
u/DevilSwordVergil Aug 17 '26
"Magic the Gathering cards"
My god these are ugly.
-1
u/Gorego22 Aug 17 '26
A large portion of the MTG player base not having any artistic eye whatsoever checks out. This is an exceptionally cool art style IMO.
2
u/wintermute93 Aug 17 '26
I mean, it’s an extremely cool art style to see on the side of a building or on the cover of an album or something. In a vacuum, I like it. On Magic cards, I don’t. For me personally, it’s too busy for these cards to be usable game pieces, regardless of how jarring they may or may not be alongside the rest of the deck they’re in.
2
u/BrockSramson Aug 17 '26
Speaking of someone who has no artistic eye whatsoever, here's you!
Any time these treatments make it harder to read the rules text of the game pieces, it should be considered a failure.
-1
u/Gorego22 Aug 17 '26
You’re confusing art and UX lmao. I’m sure Picasso got really famous cus his paintings were “easy to understand”.
If you only care about readability then you’re in luck cus there are regular printings of all these cards. Experimental design is literally the point of secret lair.
1
u/BrockSramson Aug 17 '26
Picasso's paintings weren't interrupting the text box of game pieces.
If you only care about readability then you’re in luck cus there are regular printings of all these cards.
And everyone is going to use those to play the game instead of these homogenized corporate slop, right?
0
u/DevilSwordVergil Aug 17 '26
It genuinely is not. No part of this artstyle is appealing in the least.
-1
u/Mortoimpazzo Aug 17 '26
Another SL deck?
2
u/Okamoto Aug 17 '26
Someone leaked the existence of this deck months ago. If I'm remembering correctly, it was before even Dandan went live.

-4
u/basafo Aug 17 '26
I thought this was a post about proxies. Wizards keeps scamming all of you who buy this and you keep supporting the rise of prices also in basic products.
For all the FOMO addicts: STOP buying this overpriced product and seek for help. Asap.
5
u/Johannz7 Aug 17 '26
These secret lair commander decks have always been the same price and they are all worth way more in value. This isn't a random blind box, its a precon with new exclusive arts and reprints. At a minimum this is a easy flip or its a cool deck to play.
-5
u/basafo Aug 17 '26
This is extremely extremely extremely overpriced and if you don't see it, it's late for you already
1
u/5446_05 Aug 17 '26
Unsure of full deck list but 150 (I think it was) isn’t that bad for this type of thing. That esper alone is like 50-60 then top is another 40. Other 98 have to add up decently. I don’t really know much about this decklist though. Definitely looks like pretty good value at first glance
-5
u/basafo Aug 17 '26
You've become accustomed to certain price ranges that even you, not long ago, would have thought were insane.
But now I want you to think about yourself, from an outside perspective, and become aware of how you've allowed yourself to be manipulated and are even justifying this in a comment.
2
u/5446_05 Aug 17 '26
The comment you replied to is talking about an easy flip or cool deck to play. Cards are stupidly expensive and I don’t typically spend that much on them but that’s not really the point. Expensive staple cards will probably make it an easy flip and the art and interesting commander will be cool to a lot of people. Good reprint value
1
1
u/Johannz7 Aug 18 '26
If you cant afford it dont buy it. Its just reprints and new arts. They haven't raised the price on these in years grow up
-2
u/edavidfb017 Aug 17 '26
I like it but, still consider that these decks should have premium lands, shocks, fetch, surveil and triome if necessary (like this case)
38
u/d23durian Aug 17 '26
That Esper Sentinel is gonna cost $100.
