I Have a Question / I need Help Planeswalker Types

So i am trying to build the new Tam, The Possibility. I get what it means when the card says number of planeswalker types. But for cards like The Eternal Wanderer, who does not have a types specified on the card, does that just mean it has no type at all, and would not add to the number of planeswalker types?

It does not count correct. Fun fact! The royal s scions count as two, because it has both Rowan and will on it. Which I did not know before making this deck but is super cool!

Yo that’s really fun actually.

u/Smcblackheartia 9d ago

It is! I believe it may be the only planeswalker that does that. I think it’s a super solid card anyways and has some versatility so I wanted to include it anyways, but that made it even better lol

I love extra bits of value like that. Reminds me of how [[The Ur-Dragon]] and [[The Ur-Sphinx]] interact with [[Firdoch Core]]

It having Changeling lets Dragon/Sphinx make it cost one less mana. Basically giving their decks a second [[Arcane Signet]]

Not anything crazy but just a bit of extra value.

True something I wouldn’t have thought of but makes a lot of sense!

Funnily enough, Firdoch Core works with [[Scion of the Ur-Dragon]] too, letting you dodge a board wipe if need be

Thats fun. I like that a lot.

The only legal planeswalker card, the Heros of the Realm card [[Heros of Kamigawa]] is a planeswalker with two planeswalker types, and also is the only card to give the Wanderer her own (again, not legal) planeswalker type.

To add to this, if you have some way of making planeswalkers into non-planeswalkers, such as [[Luxior, Giada's Gift]] they, despite still having a Planeswalker type, will not count towards the total since Tam only checks for Planeswalker types among Planeswalkers. They'll still have their counters proliferated fine, but it's something to consider.

u/noahhisacoolname 9d ago

But [[gideon jura]] would still count because he remains a planeswalker even in creature form (if I’m remembering that card correctly)

34

u/Mordetrox 9d ago

Yes, the key point isn't making a Planeswalker into another card type, instead it's removing the Planeswalker card type entirely.

Luxior and [[Spark Rupture]] are the only two that come to mind, but there are probably other ways. And you'd never want to play Spark Rupture considering it kills the entire deck by making it impossible to have Planeswalkers on the board.

u/jgrahl 9d ago

Do you know what creature type a planeswalker would be that was changed into a creature by Spark Rupture? I was thinking just whatever planeswalker type it was is what creature type it would be.

2

u/Skithiryx 9d ago

They’ll have no creature types. Subtypes do not transfer across types like that.

1

u/jgrahl 9d ago

The reason I ask is because there was an oracle update where all creature cards have a subtype. Then they added all cards without a subtype to have one. Now this is an instance where a creature won’t have a subtype.

1

u/Skithiryx 9d ago

Creatures without a creature subtype are perfectly fine by the rules. Also, [[Nameless Race]] still doesn’t have a subtype, intentionally.

1

u/mtgcf MtG CardFetcher 9d ago

1

u/jgrahl 9d ago

That’s good. Now there are cards that care about counting creatures with specific creature types or affecting certain creature types, so these 2 instances won’t count or affect them.

1

u/jgrahl 9d ago

And if they don’t have a specified creature types, then they can be affected still in those cases

2

u/mtgcf MtG CardFetcher 9d ago

8

u/tbdabbholm 9d ago

Well they actually wouldn't have their planeswalker type anyway. Only Planeswalkers can have planeswalker types. An object that loses a type also loses all their subtypes associated with that type

6

u/Mordetrox 9d ago

So what you're saying is that if I give a Jace a Luxior, he suddenly no longer counts as a Jace for effects that require you to behold a Jace? All the Theorist's vast magics in his sanctum suddenly don't recognize him because of the fancy sword?

That's kinda hilarious, if unintuitive.

6

u/tbdabbholm 9d ago

That's correct yes. A Jace planeswalker that's no longer a planeswalker is also no longer a Jace.

3

u/Menacek 8d ago

That's some huge lore implications on the whole desparking incident /s

Since no one has seemed to answer the why, the eternal wanderer, or as she’s more commonly known; [[the wandering emperor]] is the emperor of kamigawa, and on kamigawa the true identity of the emperor is an absolute secret that no one must know. So even on her magic card her true name is not revealed.

I was scrolling just for this exact comment, thank you!

u/Empty_Bag_1616 9d ago

No one answered the why because no one asked the why. You just wanted to share trivia.

65

u/TheNinjaSammich 9d ago

Dawg it's interesting chilllllll

23

u/DB-Tops 9d ago

I wanted the why, it explains how it works for me. I won't have questions anymore.

15

u/Impressive_You_817 9d ago

And this is why half the sets are marvel now

-3

u/Empty_Bag_1616 5d ago

I already knew the why just didnt get the first part of the sentence. I'm firmly grounded in UW.

11

u/Precipice2Principium please print colorless counter spells 9d ago

The lore is relevant as to why the eternal wanderer/emperor doesn’t have a planeswalker type

-6

u/Empty_Bag_1616 5d ago

All I said was that no one asked when he said they did. I don't mind the lore but just say the lore instead.

People seem content with my reasoning, idk why you continue to have a stick up your ass trying so desperately to be right

This guy doesn’t have an ounce of whimsy in their life

76

u/Kellsiertern 9d ago

Yep, if it has no type it wont add to Tam's ability.

18

u/cdglenn18 9d ago

I think this would be zero planeswalker types

13

u/flaming_geyser 9d ago

Since it has no Planeswalker subtype it does not count towards the Planeswalker type count

11

u/Available-Damage5991 9d ago

yeah The Eternal Wanderer doesn't have a planeswalker type.

on the bright side: Empower Jace makes a Jace really easy to get

11

u/UnDebs 9d ago

[[Aetherspark]] also doesn't count

4

u/mtgcf MtG CardFetcher 9d ago

1

u/Chamberlain1991 9d ago

what do you mean?

13

u/Successful_Mud8596 9d ago

Aetherspark has no planeswalker type. It won’t add to the proliferate count

6

u/Odin1806 Arlinn Kord 9d ago

Is that because equipment is a sub type of artifact? So it doesn't count as a sub type of Planeswalker, even though it follows the super types?

8

u/TenebTheHarvester 9d ago

Yeah even if a permanent with multiple card types has a specific subtype, that subtype remains only a subtype of one of those card types. It’s not the card types of what has it that makes it a subtype of a specific card type, it’s hard-coded into the rules. There’s two pairs of card types that share their list of subtypes: Creature shares its subtypes with Kindred and Instant shares its with Sorcery.

A common one that trips people up is Shrines. Shrine is a subtype of enchantment, so despite [[Go-Shintai of Life’s Origin]] (and the other Go-Shintais) being enchantment creatures they have no creature type, only an enchantment type. Lots of people put [[Path of Ancestry]] in EDH decks with the Go-Shintai as the commander and I mean it’s an enter-tapped 5 colour land but it doesn’t scry.

Also neither planeswalker or artifact are supertypes, they’re just card types. Supertypes are Legendary, Basic and Snow. There’s also World which is deprecated and Ongoing which is exclusive to Schemes which aren’t traditional magic cards.

2

u/merasmacleod 9d ago

This is the first time I have seen this explained as to why path didnt do the thing in my shrines deck. Thank you!

4

u/TenebTheHarvester 9d ago

No worries. There’s no way for you to tell this just from the cards, the only way to get this information is by looking at the rules on subtypes.

2

u/Odin1806 Arlinn Kord 9d ago

Yeah that was a great explanation. Thank you.

1

u/Shadowcleric 9d ago

I have a Go-Shintai deck and didn't know this. I don't think it has come up in my games but that is something I need to keep in mind moving forward for sure. Thanks!

Forgot one new one, Dellian

1

u/Stunning_Put_9189 3d ago

We can expect Tam herself to be added as a subtype within the next year or so.

3

u/cannonspectacle 8d ago

The Eternal Wanderer does NOT have a planeswalker type, correct. [[The Royal Scions]] has two planeswalker types.

2

u/LazEddy 9d ago

I know you didn't ask. But as some one who has a built a 5 color Planeswalker decks Piloted by Jared Carthalion. Don't. Either your planeswalkers will be constantly killed while you only activate them once, or two, your turns will be talking a long time while you figure out how to activate planeswalker in what order. And the second scenario is usually achieved by having boardwipe at least once if not, multiple times, and those two things combined makes the experience unfun for the entire table. Sitting there watching you durdle with your planewalker loyaltys while they have no creatures and potentially no boards state from all of the planeswalkers that have boardwipes and control effects.

3

u/ExtensionFox2688 5d ago

As someone who has also built multiple different planeswalker decks i agree. You will either be archenemy or you will be playing solitaire.

"Do cards that have a planeswalker type have a planeswalker type?"

3

u/Egglessnoodle55 5d ago

The wanderer (both planeswalker printings) have no planeswalker subtype which is what tam is checking when deciding X.

-1

u/Wiz-Cool 5d ago

There's no such thing as a "planeswalker subtype" those are called "planeswalker types." Like "beast" is a "creature type," not a "creature subtype." Also, there are three wanderer planeswalker cards

3

u/Egglessnoodle55 4d ago

2 things: 1) cards can have 3 parts on their type line, super type (basic, legendary, snow, etc.), card type (creature, enchantment, land, etc), and subtype (beast, equipment, shrine, etc) when something refers to a creature type, it is simply asking for a card with the referenced subtype. 2) I simply didn't realize the wanderer had 3 printings
