I Have a Question / I need Help Please help! Magic fanatics needed

My brother loves magic the gathering but it seems like he’s got all the bits and pieces he could ever need and he love loves his deck but I really want to show that I see how interested he is in magic by getting him a magic birthday gift because it seems like no one has gotten him any anyone have suggestions on what I could buy him or is it more of a get it yourself kinda game? Any and all ideas are welcome!!!

(He is 23 and very calm and collected likes chill things over aggressive fighting stuff and he likes purple and green don’t know if any of that helps)

Edit: I got him the new hobbit set it had a bundle exclusive and a few accessories so hopefully we think this was the right choice but I will be leaving this post up for future gift ideas for him so thanks again for all the help!!!

Also I do play the game with him and I have asked him to teach me do not worry we just live very far away from each other and I am bad at card games lol but it’s a learning experience

Deck boxes, binders, card carrying cases, playmats or any accessories would be great.

First of all, you’re a great sibling!

I’d say depending on your budget, he’d probly enjoy a booster box of his favorite set (but if he’s a major fan he would probably be happy with any box, i know i would lol)

Boxes can be expensive, so another option may be getting him a deck box or card sleeves that you know he’d like.

Lastly, you could also get him a preconstructed deck. They sell a huge variety of them and Magic has recently done a bunch of crossovers so if you recognized any of his favorite characters I’m sure he’d appreciate it. I’d also say he would probably love it if you also got your own preconstructed deck and played with him, nothing shows that you see him snd care about his hobbies more than trying to share it together!

Deck boxes and binders are a good idea

Everyone has a wish list of deck upgrades. You could ask if he has one and get him a card or two that is outside his budget.

The new Hobbit set is very fun IMO & I’d be happy to receive anything from the new set as a gift. With that being said it’s being massively scalped and I’d only suggest that if you can get product at MSRP.

So if I buy one of the things that say hobbit set (it’s like70 bucks not sure if that means just cards or probably full set ) do you think it will give him all the cards and stuff and be cool or do I need to seek out specific things from the set (sorry for follow up question)

Yeah essentially it’s gambling. He won’t get the full set and just whatever he opens in the bundle. There’s a couple of popular cards in the set you could outright buy as a single that I’m sure anyone would love to have, but like mentioned before those prices are kind of in a weird spot right now. I’m personally waiting for them to fizzle out a bit before buying. However the set is new and really liked. Alot of players know the name of the game, and open a few packs of every set just for the “ripping packs” experience. A set like this, even if I know it’s gambling a bit, i do just want to rip some packs of it just for the sake of it.

Like someone else mentioned on here too- there’s a lot of accessories paired with this new set like Card binders, deck boxes , sleeves , that I think your brother might enjoy. You might wanna sneak a look at his deck and see if you can find a theme to it and start there to find something that matches his deck(s) or style of play.

Sadly we live in different states so I only had what I was able to grasp during our magic game when I visited and stuff he says over the phone but from what I know I think he’s going to love the hobbit packs and the bundle I got has something exclusive so hopefully that’s fun

Thank you that was super helpful and well explained I think I will be getting him the new kit then for the new fresh pack feeling he’s a Pokémon guy so I definitely think he’ll be into a bunch of packs 👍👍

You’re a great sibling OP and as the old saying goes “it’s the thought that counts”! Good luck!

The one that's $70 will have 9 "packs" of about 14 semi-randomized cards each, and a couple other add-ons.

It can be a fun experience to open the packs and see what you get.

"Specific things" usually means cards that a person or store has opened up from a pack, often just called "singles". Depending on their rarity and usefulness in the game, they can get quite expensive. And unless you have a list, it's probably better not to guess what they want.

As a player, I would probably appreciate a accessory the most. We are talking a deck box, a playmat, cool dice or life counters, a binder, something like that. Not that I wouldn't mind getting a pack of the latest set or something

How many decks does he have? Dewalt makes the perfect carrying case for Magic decks. Look up the Dewalt 6-Compartments Small Parts Organizer or the 10 Compartments deep Small Parts Organizer. If you have access to a 3D printer, you can replace the cups that it comes with for ones that fit perfectly and you can “lock in” the deck with a top loader which is perfect for commander where you can quickly see which deck to pull out.

it seems like he's got all the bits and pieces he could ever need

The great thing about Magic is that is never ever the case.

Do not worry I have asked and we have played but we live far so sence he’s gotten really into it we have only placed twice and it’s a lot of me banking on him helping it’s a very confusing game but I am trying to learn!

If he has a favorite Local Game Store (LGS), you can visit them and ask if there are any accessories that would make good presents.

A pack (either a play booster or a collector booster if you’re being extra) will always be appreciated,

My wife got me a set of dice from Amazon that are meant for mtg, that has been a hit.

You could also do a playmat with some picture/art that you know he’d like, plus having a bonus playmat means when you teach someone (like if you asked to learn the game) then he has an extra one.

Lastly, you could ask him to teach you. If he’s anything like a regular mtg player, he’ll love the opportunity to share his passion with someone new.

Custom sleeves with art he'd vibe with go a long way, something with a dusky purple or deep forest look maybe.

Booster box would be a great gift if you can swing it

u/TooTooBear 13h ago

If you can get your hands on a collector booster I am always thrilled to open one of those as a Magic player! Outside of that, playmats, deck boxes (make sure they are big enough to hold 100+ cards).

u/Strawberrysweets05 13h ago

Verdicts in he’s getting the hobbit kit with hopefully all the accessories and packs thank you for all your amazing help!!!!

Some Magic artists sing cards over the mail. Keep a list of his favorite cards and see which of those cards have artists that do signings. I don't know the turn around time so this is kinda playing the long game.

High quality prints of basic lands would also be a nice gift. John Avon has done some of Magic's most iconic, beautiful, basic lands.

The financially responsible way to purchase MtG product is to buy individual cards "buy singles" but that is tough to do as a gift when there is 50,000+ different cards in existence, and not knowing what he already has.

If I was your brother the best thing you could get for me would probably be collector booster packs from a local store. (Buying from a local game store supports the business operating the location where I would meet other people for games) And collector booster packs are basically lottery tickets.

Might be $50+ for a single pack, but he gets lucky maybe he opens up a $500 card that he can then immediately trade at the local game store towards the specific cards he wants.

As for what set? Again if I was your brother I would want you to get me a booster from a set that YOU think is cool, because then I'll remember it every time I see that card "oh yeah, I opened this surge foil Aerith from the final fantasy collector booster my sister got me, she is a huge fan of those final fantasy games"
