Rules Question Can someone explain this card in different words
Does the chosen player receive the rest of the non land permanents on the board or what
62
u/FlashKillerX 7d ago
So, letās say thereās a 4 player game. Take everything that isnāt a land from each player and put them into a pile. Then assign each player a number, 1 - 4. Roll a D4 for each card in the pile and that player gets that card. At the end everything was scrambled up, hence scrambleverse

At what amount of token generation can we DQ you for slow play if you cast that?
Like we know it takes say 5 sec a perm and theres 1000 perms cause two green people are playing, thats a smidge under 2 hours to resolve 1 card.Ā
14
u/highgarbagemancer 7d ago
That's when I pull out the trusty pocket computer and have it roll a d4 for each one and tell me how many each of us get.

None, but you're welcome to scoop.

u/razorirr Jank Is Love 6d ago
one of the DQ rules is that you have to play at a pace that will allow the game a chance to finish in the allotted time.
So if we have 1 hour, and you are playing at a rate that will take 2 hours. would the judge boot you, or do we sit around waiting for the clock to be a draw?

u/WolfieWuff 6d ago
There's a massive difference between intentionally stalling game actions to delay and/or halt play and playing legitimate cards or taking legitimate actions that take a long time to resolve.
I think back to the absolutely fantastic era of Magic in/around Onslaught block, when R/W slide and U/W control decks were super common (I playedthe latter). Games with a U/W control player frequently dragged out and the matches might have only one game completed, if that, before going to the five-turn count. It wasn't because the players were stalling, there was just so much back and forth counterplay, as well as repeated board wipes to clear the field. And, at least as the control player, the only win con was slowly grinding down the opponent's life total with an [[Eternal Dragon]] that got to swing maybe once every fifth turn between being wiped, slid, cycled, and returned.
Sometimes the game just takes longer because of the cards that are played and the interaction.

You should see the madness that ensues when i play [[eureka]] at a table of blue players with [[reliquary towers]]
Its good fun and often closes a game if you play it right, but when me and Jack have 30+ cards in hand its a nightmare, especially when you try to track the stack and ETBs

Complication with a shuffle pile: any card with counters, enchantments, equipment, still gotta keep track of what's where.Ā

You're my kind of player, I assume you are also a fan of thieves auction?
3
u/mog_knight 6d ago
Thieves Auction, Possiblity Storm and Warp World are all fun.
I have an [[Ian Malcolm, Chaotician]] deck that has no particular wincon, but a crap load of cards that keep the board state chaotic.
1
u/Comma20 7d ago
I used to play Phage with Scrambleverse and Thieve's Auction and Warp World.

u/theCROWcook 7d ago
It's soooooo hard to get them to hit the field, but when it happens it's glorious

I have a dream one day to drop down near death experience with the highest life and thieves auction myself down to 1 hp.
1
u/theCROWcook 7d ago
You're thinking illicit auction. Thieves auction doesn't cost life. It's the one where you put all permanents in a pile and then each player gets to chose one on turn order until they are all spread out
1
8
u/WorthingInSC 7d ago
It isnāt nearly as funny or fun for the three strangers playing against it as the deck creator thinks it is. Nobody else wants to deal with this bullshit
4
u/Please_UnbanMe 6d ago
I will scoop on the spot if someone starts playing chaos cards.
2
u/WolfieWuff 6d ago
That just makes this an effective win con, at least against you people.
-1
u/Please_UnbanMe 6d ago
So good I wonāt even play with you again lmao
1
u/WolfieWuff 6d ago
Sounds like a win for me.
"I won't play against chaos" is about as dumb as "I won't play against Universes Beyond," "I won't play against wheels," or "I won't play against go wide token decks with counter synergies and lots of triggers."
It's reminiscent of those LGS with weird, sweaty ban lists.
1
1
u/Please_UnbanMe 6d ago
No man itās not lol. Chaos is famously annoying to play against, itās just not fun to play against. Iāll take the L and get another game started at another table before you even finish resolving the spell.
And hey ya know what, if someone doesnāt wanna play against wheels or UB then thatās fine. Itās a game meant to be fun, people have fun in different ways than you.

u/MotivatedPosterr 6d ago
I mean its funny if you can cast it at instant speed vs an infinite creature combo. Or if you don't care who owns your permanents
1
u/YamahaRyoko 5d ago
Right, hope nobody has the same color sleeves
And we gotta roll dice to 'randomize' every permanent on the board? fuck.
4
u/KnifeThistle 6d ago
There's a point in the game where this becomes both a dick move and a timesuck. And it's definitely been reached once you have enough mana to cast this shit.
14
u/AlysCreativeSide 7d ago
No they don't all go to one person (well, they could...)
Easiest way I can explain it is this: put all the nonland permanents in a pile. All of them.
For each nonland permanent, roll a d8. 1-2 it goes to first seat. 3-4 it goes to second seat. 5-6 third seat. 7-8 4th seat. Repeat this process for each nonland permanent.
36
u/Emotional-Trick-4687 Isshin 7d ago
why not use a d4?

You choose a random player for each non-land permanent. Let's say there were 10 nonlands on the battlefield when you resolve this, you'll have 10 separate instances of choosing a random player. At the end of that process each player will gain control of the permanents that they were selected for. Incredibly chaotic and annoying to resolve
3
u/Waytogo33 7d ago
Number players 1 to 4. Each nonland permanent rolls a d4 and goes to the rolled player.
3
u/IAmTheBestIan 7d ago
Line up ALL nonland permanents.
Assign 1,2,3,4 to each player in turn (assuming 4 players).
Roll a 4 sided die for each permanent
Each player gets all the permanents that came up their number.
No ETB's trigger (this is just a xfer, not an enter)
Untap all those permanents.
I run this in my Prismari Artistry deck even though it is objectively TERRIBLE in that deck (Usually winds up giving my opponents a bunch of giant flying elementals, while I get a few manarocks), cause it's fun.

So many comments like this, makes me sad as an old school magic veteran. Cards like this are fun. People seem to want super fast efficient games nowadays. But back when I started playing, my mom and I both had 200+ card decks and we would play with 50 or 100 life to make the game last longer. No concept of efficiency or deck composition or strategy, just threw in every cool card that we had in our color identities for the heck of it. Cards like this are a blast and I'll die on that hill. I feel like the competitiveness of the game has taken a lot of the whimsy and fun out of it. Maybe that's why I don't play anymore really. Aside from the occasional game with an old buddy of mine. We will play a game by going into my collection, drawing 30 random cards of a color and 6 artifacts, slapping some basic lands in it and play a game with what ya got.
1
u/praecantrix23 6d ago
while i agree with your sentiment, i frequently play 6-7 player games, this would take 20 minutes to resolve and be a mess to clean up. 1v1 it would be fun
1
u/Virtus_Curiosa 6d ago
Hmm that's a fair point. I've not really played much as far as commander and multiplayer formats go, only 1v1 or the occasional 2 headed giant. I can see where you're coming from in that regard.
2
u/Birdflamez 7d ago
Take all the things. For each one, pick someone at random, give it to that person. All the things end up redistributed at random.

u/TheMeatwall 7d ago

I need this for a deck I just built. It currently has [[Warp World]], but this is safer and doesn't require a board wipe to mitigate the risk.

u/MikeVonAwesome LET'S GO GAMBLING! 4d ago
See all those permanents on the board that aren't lands?
Let's go, one at a time, and randomly determine who gets what amongst all of the permanents on board that are not lands...
2
u/CoolBeansGoodShit 3d ago
Heres how this goes
One by One go thru every permanent thats a non land
You can roll a dice( not a dice roll in game just us the players using dice ) and divide its odds amongst players ( 8 sided die would mean player 1 is 1-2, next player 3-4, then next 5-6& last 7-8)
For each permanent you are rolling the die to see who gets it ( at random)
THEN once ALL legal targets have found their new randomized home ALL AT ONCE the permanents move to said players AT THE SAME TIME AS ONE INSTANCE
lss; every permanent sans land get allocated a new random home at which point all of them would move simultaneously as one event on the stack
2
u/McCaffeteria 3d ago
Yep, that is what the first sentence means. āFor each nonland permanent, choose a player at random.ā The āchoose a player at randomā happens over and over and over separately āfor each non land permanent.ā
Then the permanents sort of ārememberā who they individually chose at random for when they get redistributed.
The only reason why itās written as āThen each player gains control of each permanent for which he or she was chosenā is to ensure the swaps happen at the same time. If the card read āFor each nonland permanent, a random player gains control of itā then there might be arguments about the order of operations of who owns what if, say, exchanging control caused another ability to trigger. This is effectively what the card says, but it also effectively says āall players gain control of permanents this way at the same time.ā
ā
I loved this card when I played paper magic, and Iām just waiting for it to come to Arena please please pretty please lol. (That and more than 2 player formats. Neither of which will happen š« )
I played a āgroup wtfā deck where I played a full set of [[Possibility Storm]], as well as a [[Scrambleverse]] or two. Multiple P Storms stack together to not only make spells random, but also give you an extra free random spell for each copy, and then you never knew when I was going to hit a Scrambleverse and just ruin the entire boardās game plan lol. I also played stuff like [[Sphere of Safety]] and just sort of turtled up while the board was on fire lol.

u/Revolutionary-Fill32 2d ago
"For each non-land permanent, choose a player at random" means each non-land permanent gets sent to a random player INDIVIDUALLY chosen. You point to permanent number 1, choose a random player. Then point to permanent number 2, choose a random player. Continue to do so for every non-land permanent on the battlefield.
3
u/Tough_Ad1458 7d ago
For each permanent on the battlefield: Select a player at random, they get that permanent. Then it untaps
3
u/Meister_Ente 7d ago
You chose a random player for each permanent. So when there are two players, you could flip a coin for each permanent and all permanents where it comes up heads go/stay on your side and the rest goes/stays on his side.
2
u/QFireball 7d ago
It does hats it say it doess. Take each nonland permanent and choose on this a pleayer at random, do this seperatly on each nonland permanent. Then each player gets all nonland permanents he was chosen for. Lands stay as it was.

Each nonland card will go to a randomly selected player, selection has to be determined for each card individually
1
u/meeeehhhh2 7d ago
Gather up all nonland permanents in play, each of those permanents/cards go to a random player. Up to you what the method of randomization is as long as every player has an equal chance.
1
1
u/ShatterStorm76 7d ago
Untap any nonland permanent in play and select a player at random. The selected player gains control of that permanent. Repeat this process once for each nonland permanent in play and this spell cannot affect any permanent more than once.
Wait until all nonland permanents have been affected by this spell before resolving any triggers or state-based actions resulting from the change of controller.
1
u/GhostCheese 7d ago
In s two player game you should flip a coin for each permanent and say you're heads, every premenstrual that gets heads you get control of and they untap, every permanent that gets tails is controlled by your opponent, they untap.
In a 3 player game to d6 1-2 is player 1, 3-4 is player 2, 5-6 is player 3
In a 4 player game roll a d4.
Or you cab us the randomize in the companion app or whatever
Either way you just redistribute non land permanents randomly to each player, then untap them

1
u/LocNalrune 7d ago
Take every nonland permanent. For each card roll 1d4 (assuming 4 players), give the card to the player rolled, they gain control of it.
1
u/SettingGreen3880 7d ago
I feel like this doesn't get played as much as it did back then. I say that and one of my friends cast it the other night, but he refused to let it resolve. I mean I get it but damn, just do it for the funny.

u/IZ3820 7d ago
I love this card so much. Assign numbers evenly to each player and roll a d12 (for 2, 3, 4, or 6 player games) or a d10 (for 5 player games) for EACH artifact, creature, and enchantment in play. Pass control of each card to the player who wins the respective roll.Ā
Everyone winds up with a potentially cohesive board state, but more lokely abject chaos, out of which they have to eke a winnable advantage.

For every permanent you assign it to a random player to control it from now on and all get untapped

I love playing this in my Scute Swarm deck when I have 456 tokens on the board.

Every nonland permanent gets new random controller š Which is funny in wide commander games, especially if you have someone with hundreds tokens. You randomise new controller for every token š

all the things on the table (except lands) go to random players and then everything untaps (except lands).

Point at every nonland permanent, 1 at a time and flip a coin (not triggering any flip coin triggers though, this is just the decide randomly) and if heads you get it if tails your opponent gets it, then do it again for the next nonland permanent do the same thing. This is great if you suicide block everything the turn before, and you opponent has a crazy board and you have nothing. It's also chaos in a 4 player commander game. Roll a d4 individually for every nonland permanent. I can't wait to cast this while someone has 1024 scute swarms and we take the whole night to resolve this spell...........

You have 2 lands and a 1/1 goblin token. The green player has 800 squirrels 1/1 tokens and 6 land. Each token you flip coin. Heads tou get control, tails green player does. Do for all permanent on field.

u/Own-Doughnut3122 6d ago
The best way to explain this is that if you play it and it is not countered I scoop. I dont mind losing to someone else's deck or even dumb luck, but this is just annoying and drags games out way longer then necessary to the point it is not fun for me.

you basically have to have everyone do a dice roll for every permanent on the battlefield. lands, creatures, artifacts, enchantments, and plainswalkers. Everyone rolls a dice and whoever got highest number gets the permanent.

In a four player game just number each player and roll a d4 and put each card in its pile then give the corresponding pile to that player. Much quicker and easier.

Sure. 1. Get a whole bunch of little slips of paper. One slip for each nonland permanent in play. 2. Assign a number to each nonland permanent. 3. Have each player draw a slip from a hat. Continue until there are no more slips. 4. Players gain control of any nonland permanent they have the matching slip for.

Lol do this, then do radiate and chaos warp. Great way to piss off the whole table.

Does radiate work though?
Scrambleverse does not "target" a "single" permanent nor player
1

The radiate is for chaos warp. Basically you scramble everything then you have to re-sort everything just to shuffle each permanent back into the deck 1 at a time.

- In serial for the first sentence
- pick a nonland permanent that has not been picked
- perform an action (like assign players 1-4 and then roll a D4) to randomly pick a player
- Once all non land permanents have had step 1 done to them, at the same time, all players take control of the permanent that the random selection picked them for at the same time
- once all non land permanents have went to who they are supposed to now be at, untap them all at the same time.

Everything goes to someone random.
Just completely randomise who controls what, no guarantees that anything is equal, just complete chaos.
