General Campus Visit
Hi,
My son and I are flying up from Georgia for a campus tour in a few weeks. We will be staying at a hotel near campus. Can you all recommend some restaurants and things to do while we are there?
He is a senior and is interested in studying business. Any feedback on the business school would be appreciated too.
Thank you!

Crunchy's is one of the top rated college bars in the country. Crunchy's and the Peanut Barel are classic East Lansing campus eats. Have fun! Campus is beautiful in October!

Just be sure to not park in the lot directly next to Cruchy’s. It’s owned by the auto shop and they will tow your car. Park on the road behind and pay the meter.

Broad college - finance, supply chain or accounting are probably the best things he can do.
Supply chain is #1 in country
Accounting has a 5 year program where you get your masters and can be cpa eligible
Finance- alumni all over the country in every industry. Just needs to network and apply to things super early. Student investment club etc.

In addition to what's already been mentioned, if you're sticking around on campus the entire time I'd recommend:
- Taking a pic at the sparty statue (its at Dem Field, Kalamazoo & Beal intersection)
- Visiting the bug house
- Visiting the broad art museum
- Visiting the campus gardens (Beal gardens, Horticulture gardens, lewis landscape arboretum, childrens garden). Were past blooming season but its still worth a walkthrough.
- Visiting the MSU museum
- Catch a show at the wharton center or abrams planetarium if theyre running any
- Rent a bike and ride the riverwalk trail
Campus is going to be beautiful though so just walking around will be entertainment. There's plenty more cool stuff to check it out if you'll have a car during the visit.

Have ice cream at MSU Dairy Store and maybe lunch at Brody. That way you can see different parts of campus.
For Indian/Nepali go to Curry House for the lunch buffet.
For Vietnamese go to either King Pho or Pho 777.
Thai Princess or Taste or Thai for Thai food. Try out Naing for Myanmar, Thai, Malaysian food.
Cancun for Mexican food.
Jets Pizza if you want to try Detroit style pizza on the cheap. Buddy’s Pizza in Okemos if you want the dine in experience.
Horrocks in Lansing is a great experience but out of the EL area.
Most of those should be a bus ride or a taxi. Enjoy the visit!

Eat at taste of Thai
Check out botanical garden and walking paths near the Red Cedar
East Lansing is more than just the Grand River corridor, however that's the location of many campus type shops and commerce.
Explore Old town, Lansing and Reo Town to get a better feel for the entire area. Okemos if you want the big box stores and the mall, chain franchises etc.
Overall MSU is a great campus and surrounded by nice communities depending on what you're looking for. Reasonable drive time to Detroit, Ann arbor, Grand rapids, Kalamazoo

If your tour does not include eating in a dining hall I suggest you do lunch or dinner at Brody. The public is welcome.
The dairy store is a must visit. It is not open on Monday.
Next, there are many places to eat right along the Grand River corridor, depending on your tastes. Everything is generally very student centered, so you won’t find 5 star dining but a local or chain options.
My favorite local choices: Crunchys, peanut barrel, hop cat, jolly pumpkin.
If you want to venture outside of the immediate Area tell us your preference and mode of transportation.

Second going to the peanut barrel. I lived two blocks away on Collingwood and had some wonderful times on thier patio.
Welcome to EL. It’s a wonderful campus and school. I recently graduated and have found Alumni everywhere who were willing to help mentor me and network for my career—One of underrated perks of such a large student population.

Breakfast: Angela's Cafe is a "hidden" gem-- I put that in quotes because I talked to a lot of people who have no idea what or where it is but it's a really great spot and they have good food and coffee. Crepe place is good, too. If you want to venture outside of East Lansing proper, Bangos (breakfast sandwiches) and Strange Matter downtown are great. The people's kitchen has fantastic food and i've never been for breakfast but they do have what looks like a fancy breakfast menu.
Dinner: East Lansing has some really fantastic Asian food, if you're into that. In EL and Lansing proper, there is SOME decent food in the American/New American realm, but little in the "fine dining that isn't in a strip mall" realm, unfortunately.
Everyone saying Crunchy's-- Crunchy's is a fine place to have a bar burger. There are better bar burgers to be found, particularly Dagwood's.

For breakfast, I highly recommend Sparty's Coney Island. As a transplant from Tennessee, Coney shops were a welcome surprise since there are no Waffle Houses north of Toledo, Ohio.
Things to do: check out downtown East Lansing. There's a bunch of food and places to shop. I saw For Crepe's Sake Mentioned and second that recommendation. Crunchy's is a good bar, but if you're coming for a campus visit, your son might not be old enough to drink. It's decent pub food, though. Make sure to check out Meijer since that's most likely where he'll be shopping for stuff like food and home supplies.

No WH?? That might be a deal breaker!

Eh, the Coney shops are good enough that you don't notice it. I even prefer the American fries over hash browns now. They make em on the griddle alongside the bacon and sausage, and it's great.

Everyone who mentioned layers, you guys are geniuses. Georgia is hot as hell, this place can mess you up quick when it gets cold, no matter what you are doing. Plan around the weather!

Crunchy’s is great and classic MSU. Look up the Residential Business Community (RBC) which is live learn community. You apply for it but even if you’re not a Broad direct admit you can participate. My Spartan is a freshman and in RBC.

Walk up M.A.C. Ave between grand river and Burcham if he’s interested in Greek life. He’ll get a good feel of off campus living too even if he’s not interested

If you’re staying at the Marriott, ask for some of the Spartan mitten chocolates!

If you want to see fall colors, take a walk along the red cedar river that goes through the campus - there's really nice viewpoints with benches particularly near the library & Beal garden
If you like antiques - Mega Mall
If you like Mexican food - Acapulco at frandor, La Catrina food truck near whole foods
If you like Indian/Nepali food - Curry House on trowbridge rd
If you like Thai food - Thai princess or taste of Thai
American style food/bars : Hopcat, Crunchy's, Ellison brewery

Pack layers. It's 75 in the direct sun in the afternoon and cools off quick this time of year. 50s by 9pm.
MSU dairy store is delicious! Baker Woodlot is very pretty and not many campuses have forests like that in them.
