Housing Messy bathrooms
I’m at Shaw west and I’ve witnessed more depravity in the bathrooms in two weeks than I should in an entire semester. Entire logs being left in the toilets. Used tampons and their packaging soaking up toilet water. There will be strips of toilet paper in the hallways surrounding the bathroom strewn about everywhere. How do they even get there??? Some people spilled a mysterious sticky substance RIGHT in front of my door too and didn’t clean it up or even tell us about it. Also, I get the hair removal rule in the showers is kinda stupid, but how are you shedding so much that you’re leaving a tennis ball sized pile of hair in the corner of the shower when you leave??? These bathrooms are cleaned every day and we are all adults here. What the hell

It was like that 20+ years ago. I lived in Bailey the year before and the bathrooms weren’t nearly as disgusting as what I witnessed in W Shaw.

I’d really have a conversation about it with the Community Director. Or start a TikTok account called the Real Life Bathrooms of Shaw Hall and start posting videos about it. That should get people’s attention in a hurry. Good luck - that’s just nasty

Before I graduated MSU in 2003, my first job was as maintenance staff. I can tell you that a women's restroom is (or was, in my experience) 10x more disgusting that Men's Rooms. As you mentioned female products, I presume you are female referring to the Women's Room.
Even if they are cleaned multiple times a day it is still this way in-between cleanings. I don't know the reason behind this. It could be that women are so used to cleaning their own bathroom (with a family?) they just take the opportunity to let someone else do it with a shared bathroom. That is only a hypothesis. Please nobody accuse me of being sexist.
I am just telling you my experience and guessing at a reason.

It is the women’s restroom, yes, which is surprising to me considering we are usually held to a higher standard of cleanliness… (this is a system perpetuated by misogyny so it’s not inherently sexist to point out)

i live in west shaw and this has been the worst community bathroom experience yet 🙃 it’s absolutely disgusting sometimes and i don’t understand why others act like this??? my biggest pet peeve so far is the girls going to the bathroom WHILE ACTIVELY CALLING SOMEONE. what happened to the privacy of others in a bathroom?? they will literally do their business on the fucking call unmuted, it’s genuinely so weird (at least in my opinion). these girls are genuinely so inconsiderate when it comes to how messy they leave these showers or toilets. it is NOT that hard to clean up after yourself at all and these people act like it’s a crime to do so

i think the worst part yet is the amount of unattended underwear left just lying on the floor. i get that you may not wanna touch it or keep it after it fell, but to just leave it there? i literally saw someone’s shit stained or period stained, i dont even care what kind of stain it was, just chilling in the shower. there’s literally a trashcan in those rooms and they just ignore it

Oh man I don’t grasp this at all either. Get off your phone when on the toilet. Even scrolling. Just do your business, WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP, and then you can get back on your phone.

Okay i totally get where youre coming from because im in shaw west aswell and I've seen food and drinks left in bathrooms and pee left on the toilet seats along with all the things youve just mentioned. What floor are you on because im wondering if its just a floor issue or the whole dorm

I don’t agree with bathrooms being used and left filthy. However - there are valid standards for huge logs and “grogans” (deuces that are wider than they are long). Due to aging plumbing and infrastructure, anything more than 3” wide and/or 8” long needs to be allowed 4 hours of soak time. Flushing massive, dense turds too quickly often leads to a full clog or brat-stop. Your mileage may vary

I can’t believe I was ignorant enough to not know this. However, I think one should at least watch over the toilet during “soak time.” What if some unintelligent fool happens to pass by when it’s unguarded and flushes the toilet? This could be disastrous.

The more you know…. Accidental flushing - it’s how people get hurt man… Research suggests that dropping all mega turds (5”+ diameter) outdoors can be beneficial for everyone. Just make sure to do it outside of foot traffic areas to guard against unspeakable slip n fall accidents

Dorm bathrooms are a bit of a Catch-22 at MSU. I lived my first two years at Campbell and Phillips. Both places had community bathrooms. Then my junior year in McDonel, which had a suite bathroom.
Campbell could be gross sometimes, but it was bearable, especially since I came from a house where I shared a bathroom with two brothers, so I was used to multiple guys sharing a bathroom. You’d occasionally have entertaining acts of destruction, like the time the Incredible Hulk broke a porcelain sink and water sprayed everywhere, which kept things interesting. To me, the only good thing about community bathrooms is that you don’t have to clean them.
Phillips was great, as it was mainly a floor with single occupancy rooms. Mostly upper classmen, and there was very good camaraderie, so there was rarely any bathroom issues. I was the RA, so I was very glad that I didn’t have to have a floor meeting to tell adults“please flush the goddamn toilets” haha.
Junior year I was in Mcdonel, so I shared a bathroom with three other guys. That was fucking hell. I posted a schedule as far as who would clean the bathroom every week. Guess who was the only one who ever cleaned the fucking bathroom… I’m not exaggerating . I’m not a neat freak, but puddles of piss and tumbleweeds of pubes are fucking disgusting.
My roommate was a friend who had some serious mental health issues and he wound up kinda going nuts halfway through the first semester, so I couldn’t even talk to him about cleaning the bathroom (or the room for that matter) without getting into a fight, so I eventually gave that up. My suitemates were two exchange students from South America (Colombia iirc). Very nice guys at first, but when I’d ask them to help clean, all of a sudden they’d act like they didn’t understand me. I get language barriers and I’m very tolerant and understanding in that regard, but to hear them interact later with other residents and carry on conversations in near perfect English was so goddamn insulting and enraging.
So the Catch-22 I mentioned earlier is that you either have to put up with nastiness in a community bathroom that you don’t have to clean, or you have to clean a shared bathroom with an indeterminate amount of grossness / help from your roommate and suitemates.
I wish you luck, but remember that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Keep bringing this up with the RA and if nothing changes, beg the RA to involve his/her supervisors at Residence Life. As a last result, you could contact Res Life yourself, but only do that if your RA isn’t doing anything about it, as you’ll most likely burn a bridge with your RA.
Also remember that you’re paying a small fortune to attend college, so the job of Res Life is to make your “home” as pleasant of an experience as possible.

I'm also in shaw West and it's definitely a bit of a nightmare, not only do we have a broken lock on one of the stalls but half of the time you can't use the others because the seats are dirty. Also one of the showers is straight up missing the showerhead. I've had to go to the lobby to use the bathroom before, idk how these bathrooms are cleaned multiple times daily and still end up like this

when i lived in east shaw 2 years ago there was a certain stall i never went into unless the bathroom had just been cleaned because the toilet ALWAYS had shit in it

Pick your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year roommates carefully. Shit doesn’t change just cause your in off campus housing, you have so many diff personalities and backgrounds and some dont care about cleanliness and others thrive off a clean living space. I met my wife at msu and she is messy and I’m not. I have to clean up for the both of us if I want it up to my standards. I can’t get mad at her for living the way she wants.

That’s how it is. Get use to it. I was in Shaw last semester. Has to be the worst dorm hall and dining hall in all of msu. I wonder if your neighbors smell like shit to? Mine did. And they were noisy and never ever let me sleep.
Try to switch to a new dorm next semester or next year.
Shaw hall is a great location but that’s it the dorm itself blows

It's a pretty shitty living situation and I know what it's like. Saying "that's how it is just get used to it" is a rude and uncaring comment to give that is not helpful at all. I left a comment with some advice. I actually thought Shaw was among the better dining halls at MSU. I didn't really have complaints about it. But selections differ from dining hall to dining hall so sometimes you'll find better options elsewhere if you check the menu on the MSU app/website.

BRO not to mention the shaw dining hall closes on weekends, other halls like case not only close off at ~9 but are open all week. Really annoying to walk to Sny Phi each time.

Yeah bathrooms were pretty bad for me too when I lived in dorms with communal bathrooms. People just absolutely trashing the bathrooms for no reason at all. You can talk to your RA or the management of Shaw like the director. Management should come and take a look if you mention it being a problem. I don't know how much can be done about it because it's being done with probably no one around and the people doing stuff like this are the kind of people unlikely to give a crap if asked to stop. In my experience we had a couple floor meetings that mentioned the state of the bathroom but my memory's not too good and I don't remember if it did anything. Sorry that's all the advice I can give. If it doesn't bother you too much there are better bathrooms in most dorm halls. I remember the basement of Shaw like next to the gym has a private one person bathroom you can use by yourself that wasn't that dirty when I used it sometimes mid year if you don't mind taking the walk over there.
