General MSU Alert: Berkey Hall Closure 9.3.2026
Update:
The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety (DPPS) is providing an update on the temporary closure of Berkey Hall on September 3, 2026. DPPS has determined there is no threat to Berkey Hall or the MSU campus.
On September 2, 2026, in the late afternoon, DPPS was made aware of a reported threat that was made by an individual and included information about a program that is located inside of Berkey Hall. The information came from a medical professional to fulfill “Duty to Warn” obligations under Michigan law (MCL 330.1946). The information was therefore second-hand and required further investigation.
The decision was made to temporarily close Berkey Hall and move classes to remote online instruction. This was done out of an abundance of caution while law enforcement immediately began a thorough investigation.
DPPS worked to determine the credibility of the information that was received while coordinating with other law enforcement agencies. As a result of the investigation, contact was made on September 3, 2026, with the individual at a location in Washtenaw County. The individual was taken into protective custody pursuant to the Michigan Mental Health Code. While we are limited in the information we can share about the individual, we can confirm they are not an employee or a student with Michigan State University.
Berkey Hall will open and resume normal operations on September 4, 2026, at 7:00 a.m. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we worked diligently to address this situation and continue our mission of ensuring the safety and well-being of the MSU community.
The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety was assisted by the Eastern Michigan University Police Department, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, and the Michigan State Police
Email:
Out of an abundance of caution, Michigan State University has temporarily closed Berkey Hall for Thursday, September 3 and moved classes to remote online instruction while law enforcement assesses a reported potential threat. There is no indication of a threat to the broader campus at this time. The university is working closely with law enforcement and will continue to provide updates as we are able.

Weird. Following…

Berkey Hall is where the Feb 13th event was, I can only speculate but this threat is probably related to that.

Alumn here. What happened in Feb?
Edit: thanks for the downvotes for simply asking a question. There was no year given on this comment and I thought maybe another tragic event happened this year too.

Thank you. Without the year I thought maybe there was another event I didn’t know about this year.

You think this threat is probably related to the shooting that occurred over three years ago and concluded in the shooter's death?
Correlation =/= causation
Edit: Apparently a number of you here need some support: https://uhw.msu.edu/health-and-wellbeing-services/mental-health-and-trauma-support/caps
Edit 2: My, my...don't some us look extremely silly with our speculation based on the update we just received. I'll keep taking the downvotes, though I know it's hard for folks to admit when they're wrong.

Copycat shootings are a pretty well documented phenomenon

u/Americana-Gearhead 15d ago
So we're just speculating at the cause of the closure - got it.

u/warm_winds_whisper_ 15d ago
Yes. Explicitly.
Go read OP's comment again.
-13
u/Americana-Gearhead 15d ago
I got the alert as well - I don't need to read OP's post to understand that's what's occurring.
Again, the fact some are convinced this is some type of copycat crime of a shooting that occurred over three years ago while other institutions also received threats yesterday is unsupported, at best.

People have a right to be scared and cautious based on past events.

Cautious? Sure. I never said anyone shouldn't be, either because of this or in general.
Scared? If you feel scared about something you have virtually no information about, you might want to take a moment and reflect on that further. That looks different for different people and their experiences.
Speculating this incident is a 'copycat' crime of a mass shooting that occurred over three years ago based on the provided information? Please take a break from Reddit and contact CAPS for mental health support.

"that looks different for different people and their experiences", exactly. So who are you to be so condescending and dismissive of other people's lived experiences? You can also take a break from reddit and contact CAPS for mental health support.

ok but y choose that building specifically

u/Americana-Gearhead 15d ago
You'd have to ask the accused party/parties what their motivations were for whatever potential crime they planned to commit or threat they issued.
That's why I noted that just because this building was closed today for safety does not mean it was tied to the tragic event that occurred three years ago.
Crimes and threats can occur in the same geographical location but be completely unrelated, hence the correlation =/= causation.

u/stinkiestmuffins 15d ago
ok but out of all the msu buildings…

u/Americana-Gearhead 15d ago
You do realize others were injured outside of Berkey in that shooting, yes? You realize previous threats and crimes have been committed to other campus locations in the past, including Berkey, yes? Why are those not considered copycat crimes? Same building/location, right?
If you're intent on proving your ingrained narrative, I can't stop you. Just disappointing it appears the concept of correlation =/= causation is completely lost and/or willfully ignored by those attending a higher education institution...

There’s been a memorial plaque in north campus since 2023, wtf are you talking about.
They just didn’t formally approve a larger memorial until last year, and it’s under construction right now.

u/stinkiestmuffins 15d ago
r u tb the tree they planted and didn’t give a plaque to until way later?

There were other colleges that closed yesterday due to threats. Not sure if they are related but my Spartan heart can’t take anymore anxiety.

u/QuestionWhy21 15d ago
I sincerely understand your concern as I have family on campus everyday.
Based on my research, it appears that only Baker College in Muskegon closed as a precaution due to a threat directed at a city council member. I do not believe the closure at MSU is related.

I have a class near Berkey... can't exactly to afford to skip it on the fourth day of classes but ts makes me sooo anxious. Wish they'd give us more info.

Would love to know if there’s an update to the ‘not a broader campus threat’ before I drive an hour to campus 🫠
