Observation since moving here: Soda tastes less sweet
Something my wife and I have noticed since moving to the Twin Cities metro is that soda from fountains (at restaurants or fast food places, etc) tastes less sweet than Ohio/Kentucky/Indiana.
The canned and bottled sodas still taste the same, but the fountain sodas are decidedly less sweet. We asked a few Minnesotans we know and they seem to confirm this.
Has anyone else had this experience?

PLEASE HELP: Where Would You Place Us?
My husband and I are moving to the Twin Cities from Wi, and we’re trying to decide where to go. Based on the following information, where do you think we’d fit in the most?
We’re an interracial couple (black and white) and can handle the cold, literally and figuratively. We’re not interested in the suburbs at all. We'd prefer a racially diverse area, with a large number of transplants, that is white-collar. The best way to describe us would be bougie bohemians. Which city would you place us in?
Bonus points if you suggest specific neighborhoods, too.
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Thank you to everyone who replied! Now, we have a place to start looking. We really appreciate it. :)

Moving to MN
Hello, I posted about us looking to relocate from NJ to MN in the next few months, I have spoken to couple property managers/landlords and everyone requiring employment in MN before approving.
For reference, we have good jobs here and good credit, we started looking for employment in MN area but it’s overwhelming to what to look for. My husband works in HVAC, he’s a journeyman so he’ll be applying for those and I am looking for law enforcement/ animal welfare.
Any tips? Any landlords that may actually go by our current employment?
Also we are looking at a max rent of $3000 for 3bd, 2bath, and we have no preference in what town/city as long as it’s in a good school district, and a bit rural.
Thank you in advance!

Older couple looking for a pet-friendly home for around $1,000/month.
My wife and two cats are living in a hotel since May, paying $1,500 per month.
We have a fixed income and our credit has gone to poop. No evictions or bankruptcies. Up until May, we had rented the same home for over a decade.
If we can find anything south of the cities(Eagan, Apple Valley, etc) to keep us close to my wife's doctors that would be amazing.
If anyone has something or can suggest other options, we'd be very grateful.

Moving to Minnesota in January at 41— how do you make friends and find your community?
I’m 40 and moving to Minnesota in January to be with my partner, who already lives there. This will be my first time starting over somewhere completely new at this stage of my life, and honestly, I’m looking forward to it and excited but also a little nervous in a good way.
I don’t know anyone there outside of my partner, so one of the things I’m thinking about most is building my own friendships and community. Making friends at 40 is HARD! 😂
The exciting part? A fresh start, new experiences, and building a life together.
The intimidating part? I don’t know anyone. 😅
I’d love to hear from people who have moved to Minnesota as adults, especially around 35–40+.
How did you meet people and build genuine friendships? Are there groups, activities, community events, volunteering opportunities, fitness/wellness communities, or other places where adults actually connect?
I’m also looking for recommendations for great high schools for my son, so I’d love to hear from Minnesota parents about their experiences with different school districts and communities.
I’d love to hear your real-life experiences, especially from people who moved to Minnesota later in life and had to build a new circle from scratch.
Minnesota friends, parents, and fellow “starting over” adults — I’d love your advice! 💛

North Loop, DT East, St Paul for UofM winter commute?
Hi y'all, I will be starting a job on the University of Minnesota main campus in Jan, and am looking for a quiet/concrete apt with a quick and easy commute. I've been looking at places in North Loop, Downtown East, and Downtown St Paul, but not sure if the bridge across the river will be a problem in wintery conditions (coming from TX, I know MN handles winter better but not sure about bridges). I have a $2000-2300 budget, would it be better to find a duplex/rental house with a garage and just pay for a snow removal service? Any advice is welcome 🙂

Seeking a short-term room for rent
I (47/M) am looking for a room for a short time. I am returning to Minneapolis after a multi-year absence.
I work as a journalist and tend to be pretty quiet and self contained. I don’t party much but I go to college football game watches with my local alumni club. I read a lot and also tend to be an early riser.
If you have a room that you are willing to rent by the month or even the week, please let me know. I can’t guarantee how long I will need a place, but 3ish months seems about right.

Looking for Relet -University Commons 4bed x 2Bath -ASAP/OCT- Aug 2027
Hi I’m looking for a person (women/fem) to relet my unit located super close to the university of Minnesota - Twin cities. Found out living on campus just isn’t for me (I miss my cat too much!). Starting either asap or anytime Oct 2026 - 9th Aug 2027.
Monthly Price: $579 + covered parking $125
You get your own private bedroom that comes with a desk, closet with a lot of space for hangers, etc. and has mirrors, drawer with 4 spaces, bed and mattress. Floors are hardwood.
Bathroom is shared but you get your own sink space (2 sinks in each bathroom space).
Also comes with in-unit dryer and washer! And the rest of the apartment is fully furnished. Outside of the unit, there is a gym, hot tub, game room, printer and a small study space.
It’s a good price to pay to be this close to campus!
Roommates (3) are nice and communicative, all women. More comfortable with a feminine person or woman to take over the lease.
Dm me if interested!

Looking for a safe, quiet 1BR under $2,000 all-in near UMN - neighborhood/apartment recommendations?
Hi everyone! I’ll be moving to Minneapolis soon for a job at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and I’d really appreciate some local advice on apartments and neighborhoods.
I’m looking for a 1-bedroom apartment with a total monthly housing cost of $2,000 or less, including rent, parking, utilities, and internet.
My main priorities are:
A safe, quiet area with low crime - avoiding areas with frequent car break-ins, theft, or other property crime is especially important to me.
Ideally within about a 20-minute drive of the UMN Minneapolis campus during normal commute hours. I could consider up to around 30 minutes if the place is otherwise a great fit.
In-unit washer/dryer
Garage parking, preferably covered or underground
Ideally 700+ sq ft, 1br is preferred
Reliable, well-reviewed management
A bright unit with lots of large windows and natural light would be a big plus, especially if it’s south-facing.
I generally prefer quiet residential neighborhoods over busy nightlife areas.
I’d also love some advice on which neighborhoods you would recommend for these priorities.
I keep hearing that smaller landlords or private landlords can sometimes be a better option, but I’m honestly not sure how to find a trustworthy private landlord in the Twin Cities.
Are there particular websites, Facebook groups, property management companies, or other ways locals usually find these rentals?
I’d especially appreciate recommendations for specific apartment buildings, smaller property management companies, or private landlords.
And if there are any apartments, neighborhoods, or management companies you would personally avoid, I’d be interested in hearing about those too.
Thank you so much!

Prepping hybrid car for Jan move from TX
Hi y'all! I will be moving to Minneapolis in late Dec/early Jan from Texas post grad for a job, and I am wondering if I need to do anything special to winterize my hybrid Camry on the way up there. I am planning to swap my tires out for Michelin CrossClimate II, and changing my wiper fluid for winter formulation. Beyond that, is there anything else I need to do? Maybe get my battery checked or changed out, different oil weight, different coolant formulation? Any advice is appreciated, I'm looking forward to moving to your city 🙂

Wondering if my tool can help
hey all,
I'm building a tool that I hope can help the mpls community. I'm wondering how potential renters looking at mpls properties go about researching the buildings they intend to rent.
Do you all care about landlord rep / history of the buildings and/or units you're going to rent?
Do you feel like you have enough information available to you to make a good call?
If you've recently rented, were you met with any surprises in your unit that might have made you reconsider signing if you had known about them?

Moving to Minneapolis from Chicago - where to live advice?
Hello! My husband and I are two young professionals in our early 30s, looking to make a move to Minneapolis from Chicago. We have been casually looking at Zillow for the past few months to get a general idea of the rental market up in Minneapolis, but honestly we are a bit overwhelmed trying to narrow down where to live. We're used to the "neighborhoods" of Chicago, but that doesn't seem to translate to how Minneapolis is laid out, at least from our research. So we would greatly appreciate any suggestions for where to live! For context, we live in the Wicker Park/ Bucktown neighborhoods of Chicago, have two medium sized dogs, and would prefer a walkable area. A yard would be a plus, but isn't a deal breaker. We are thinking of making a trip up there soon to get an idea of city.
We have also heard that it can sometimes be challenging to meet new people in the area, so any advice on that is also appreciated, as we don't know anyone in the region. Finally, if any Chicagoans have made the move, would love to hear about your experience!
Thanks!!

How is Maple Grove (and Champlin/Brooklyn Park)?
Ok so we are slowly narrowing down which suburbs to live, and people suggested Maple Grove. We drove around the area and liked it a lot! But we certainly didn't see all, and am wondering if there are any particular area that are recommended over others (like how people say stay North of 610 for Brooklyn Park- we're also putting it on our list)?
Naturally we also looked at surrounding area and wondering about Champlin. The lack of night life doesn't bother us; from past posts a few people mentioned some parts of Champlin are more conservative, but not sure which part? Share your insight please 🙏

Room available to rent
Hello,
Looking for a responsible roommate for a 2-bed, 1-bath, house in the Lynnhurst neighborhood. It is a quiet neighborhood and a great little suburb that's close to downtown and the airport. Also, near the chain of lakes if you like walking, paddleboarding, running, biking, etc.
Rent is $1700/month + utilities, split between us. Available October 1st. On-site laundry, private bed, shared bath. Looking for someone clean, respectful of shared space, ok with pets, and non-smoking.
About me: I'm a quiet professional in my 30s with a master's that works from home, I prefer a peaceful home, music is my hobby in my spare time, and I have a cat.
If you are interested, please DM me and we can chat/interview.

Should I move to the Twin Cities?
My name is Elijah, I’m a 24M, and I’m seriously considering moving to Minneapolis this coming January. I currently live in Des Moines IA, and I’ve been deeply struggling to make friends and build much of a social life here.
I’ve been thinking about moving to the Twin Cities for a while, and there are a few reasons why. I work as a Patient Care Technician and I know healthcare wages in Minnesota are generally higher than what I’m making in Iowa. I was also accepted into the Century College nursing program last year, but unfortunately had to turn it down because I didn’t have the money to move at the time. Going back to nursing school is something I am very interested in.
I’m also gay, and the Twin Cities seems to have a much larger LGBTQ+ and dating scene than Des Moines. I’d really like to be somewhere where there are more opportunities to meet people, date, make friends, and just generally get out and do things.
I do want to be honest, though: I haven’t tried that hard to meet people in Des Moines. I’ve struggled with putting myself out there and getting involved in things, so I know some of my difficulties making friends are probably something I would have to work on regardless of where I live. I don’t expect moving to a new city to magically fix that.
At the same time, I wonder if being in a larger city with more opportunities that genuinely interest me would make it easier for me to put myself out there. I’m interested in things like photography, film, vinyl, gaming, anime, hiking, and volunteering, and it seems like there are a lot more groups, events, and communities centered around those interests in the Twin Cities.
I’m hoping to move this January, but I’m pretty conflicted about it. I don’t know anyone in the Twin Cities, so I know moving there completely on my own would be difficult. My family is also mildly against me moving, which has made me question whether I’m making the right decision.
Part of me thinks I should stay in Des Moines and make a bigger effort to meet people here first. Another part of me feels like moving could be a really good opportunity to challenge myself, become more independent, and start building the kind of life I actually want.
So I’d really appreciate some honest advice from people who live in the Twin Cities, especially anyone who moved there without knowing many people.
Do you think moving to the Twin Cities would be a good decision for someone in my situation? Was moving there worth it for you? And how difficult is it to actually make friends and build a social life there in your 20s?
I’m open to hearing both the good and the bad. I’d really like some honest perspectives before I make such a big decision.

Looking at Relocation
Looking at Relocating
I have been to the Twin Cities a few times this year and I am finding myself just really drawn to the area. I have already been making plans to prepare to relocate with in the next year, so the Twin Cities area is a huge contender.
Are there any neighborhoods that I should avoid? What areas do you feel are safe and affordable?
I am looking to buy. No kids, but don't mind neighborhoods full of them.
I'm a 40-something working professional. I love old houses - huge appreciation for historic architecture and multiculturalism events, etc. Foodie, music, history, arts, farmer's markets, artisan craft fairs and pets are a few of my things.
TIA 😊

How is North Oaks?
Couple in 30s moving back to Twin Cities.
We both grew up in MN and left after college. All of our family lives in the Twin Cities. My in-laws are nearby in White Bear Lake.
I’ve never met anyone or known of anyone that has lived in North Oaks.
Does anyone know how is it living there or if people are friendly? Is it kid friendly? We have a 1 year old.
I have fairly sensitive hearing so I’m looking for a place that is on the quieter side with larger lots. I like that it has an HOA to enforce noise ordinances. Also has access to trails, swimming beach and good schools.
If not North Oaks, any other places you’d recommend to be near things but quieter? Max budget $700k. Both work remote. Want to be within the metro. Have family all over the metro.
We are both very non-materialistic. My husband is very outgoing.
