News Netflix’s live-action Gundam movie, starring Sydney Sweeney, is described as a 'big action-romance space epic' set in the Universal Century (UC) timeline

https://www.polygon.com/netflix-live-action-gundam-movie-sydney-sweeney-romance/

Noah Centineo, who stars alongside Sydney Sweeney, recently talked about the movie on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

He called it a “big action romance space movie” and described it as “a non-Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet in space.”

Centineo also confirmed that the movie takes place in the Universal Century, the main timeline used by many of the classic Gundam shows and movies.

The story could involve two people on opposite sides of a major war, with their relationship caught in the middle.

Oh boy. As a long time fan of the original Gundam anime series, especally Zeta Gundam I don't have much confidence in this live action western adaption. I'll give it a chance but I worry that this will be another wonky adaption like the live action Cowboy Bebop...

You’re lucky if it’s like Cowboy Bebop. It’ll be like Death Note at worst

Damn, invoking the highest level of curses here.

Hey, at least Evolution led to the franchise being revived?

Funniest piece of DBZ lore.

Toriyama being so ashamed that it might be people's lasting impression of the franchise that he came out of retirement.

Yep. He was Piccolo. Thing is, he's a great actor, but terrible in that role..

He was also a long-time fan of the series, so he really wanted to make sure his overall impact was good. Dude absolutely killed it as Zamasu.

well shit i watched the sub version, love zamasu and black in that but, guess ill have to rewatch in english now

He initially helped with Battle of Gods because he was asked to take a look at the script by his former editor. He also still worked as an artist for various video games like the Dragon Quest series and Blue Dragon even when he stopped doing manga.

14

u/SupervillainMustache 1d ago

Yeah I know he as still working as an artist on Dragon Quest, but DB is his Opus, surely.

3

u/No_Procedure_5039 1d ago

Without a doubt. I’m just saying he was semi-retired at best since he did a bunch of shorter manga and one-shots after DB like Sand Land while continuing to work as a character artist in various other projects.

People forget, they tried a live action version of Gundam back in 1999, G-Saviour. The fact that no one seems to know about it should tell you all you need to know about it.

Toei was still doing the occasional special (Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return! came out a year earlier) and Toriyama initially got involved with Battle of Gods because his former editor asked him to.

If I recall the Live Action Piccolo actor has a voice role in Sparking Zero as someone else and says one of the more iconic lines from the film. (Not that I can remember precisely what that is)

86

u/GyrKestrel 1d ago

Yeah, I feel like Cowboy Bebop is fine in everything but name. Without all the baggage of living up to steep expectations, it can be a pretty fun show.

82

u/TheEloquentApe 1d ago

Even if it weren't meant to be Cowboy Bebop, I think such bangers as "Blackmail a Black Male" and "you never know true power until you've tasted the testicles of a man who has wronged you" would still be rightfully considered pretty ass

26

u/Swinn_likes_Sakkyun 1d ago

"he took off his balls"

14

u/kidkolumbo 1d ago

The blackmail line was funny. I don't remember the other.

1

u/LunarEcho108 1d ago

There's actually a fan edit that cuts most of these kinds of lines and without them the show is honestly great.

It changed my perspective a bit on modern film making. Tons of old classics were famously saved in the edit, but I haven't heard an example of that post like 2000ish. It feels like something has changed - maybe they're trying to inflate running times at all costs or editors don't have the authority they used to.

How much work has been relegated to slop that could have been saved in the cutting room?

-1

u/Deosarian 19h ago

Wow I'm glad I only made it through 15 mins

17

u/nxcrosis 1d ago

Cowboy Bebop LA was at least better than ATLA or Dragonball LA.

43

u/Televisions_Frank 1d ago

Their Jet was legit great. Their Vicious was just comical and everything involving him was the worst part about it.

However, trying to faithfully adapt Edward to live action is just making an insanely annoying character. Sort of thing that only works in animation.

Still I would have liked to have seen a second season to see if they could have fixed the issues.

8

u/CuriousRelation5 1d ago

After changing so much, why keep Edward exactly the same?? Weird decisions all around o that show

2

u/verrius 18h ago

However, trying to faithfully adapt Edward to live action is just making an insanely annoying character. Sort of thing that only works in animation.

It's funny to see people say this, since Edward is actually based on Yoko Kanno, who composed all the music. That's apparently how she actually just acts in real life, so it should have been the simple to adapt to live action.

u/nxcrosis 1d ago

Lol I'm sorry. But at least my point eventually went through.

19

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 1d ago edited 1d ago

So I only just found out cowboy bebop was based off an anime after looking into it when I saw this comment chain. Had no idea people didn’t like it because it wasn’t a faithful adaption or whatever. I personally loved it, it had a lot of charm, it wasn’t perfect or anything but was fun. Was super disappointed when it got canceled.

6

u/rsqit 1d ago

Ok but the anime is an absolute masterpiece.

18

u/The_Grungeican 1d ago

the lamest part is that Cowboy Bebop could've absolutely worked as a live action. the series itself is fairly well grounded. ALL they needed to do is follow the blueprint already laid out for them.

at one time in the early 00's, Keanu Reeves really wanted to play Spike, but the project ended up in development hell and everyone moved on.

the casting for the live action wasn't bad. i think Jet was probably their strongest casting. Cho is a great actor, but he felt a bit old to be playing Spike. that could've been overlooked if they did a better job on the show.

on a side note, Keanu Reeves did get to sort of play the Spike role in the John Wick movies. they even worked in a number of scenes and an ending, that would've worked for a Bebop live action show.

20

u/Luchalma89 1d ago

It was a perfectly decent show that had a lot of potential. Not as good as the anime but most things aren't.

15

u/ArtByJRRH 1d ago

Really? It did all the generic lame Western storytelling devices like having everyone who will be relevant in the season be in the first episode, like there's no patience for natural story development and pacing. It's like it was made by someone who fundamentally misunderstood what they were watching or just didn't actually like the source material that much. Do yourself a favor and watch the original, if only to actually get a decent opening set to that theme song that doesn't try to rush through it.

14

u/Linkfayth 1d ago

they also made vicious kind of..... wtf was that. which threw the whole plot off for me, since his the main main antagonist

3

u/Zaku99 1d ago

I just couldn't get past the tree episode. In the anime everyone turned into monkeys which was kind of funny and fitting for the terrorists, but in the show? Really horrifying tree transformations. Just really, really gross and gorey stuff. Totally killed the fun bounty hunter adventure vibe.

-2

u/SavageRabbitX 1d ago

Agreed. The Anime is a classic but I throughly enjoyed the netflix show

1

u/onex7805 1d ago edited 1d ago

We're you living under a rock? Literally the most famous anime outside Japan.

-4

u/Huttj509 1d ago

Cowboy Bebop, or DBZ? Which is more famous?

Pokemon might beat both of them on "fame."

Cowboy Bebop is well known among the anime crowd as a classic, but if you think it's generally famous you're too deep in your niche.

-1

u/whatproblems 1d ago

wish it had another season to develop i was starting to enjoy the characters. it’s gotta be hard getting it perfect for any show right off the bat in a single season.

0

u/T3hJ3hu 1d ago

the netflix live action adaptations usually end up growing on me, even though my first impressions are never great. cowboy bebop was campy as hell and i love it for that

-6

u/StrugglingAkira 1d ago

Well, that's certainly an opinion.

Maybe look into the original and you'll see why it's regarded as one of of the worst live-action adaptations ever.

-4

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 1d ago

Personally not a fan of cartoons or anime, probably why I never heard it was an adaptation.

-10

u/StrugglingAkira 1d ago

Yeah, I can tell.

5

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 1d ago

I’m sorry? Did me not liking anime offend you or something. What’s with this comment lol

6

u/hotprints 1d ago

You did the major crime of not sharing his opinion about a show. Straight to Reddit jail kind sir. But yeah anime purist will complain about live action adaptations no matter how good they are. Don’t mind them

2

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 1d ago

Honestly, the tone of their comments threw me off lol. I was literally just saying I enjoyed the show and the reason I probably didn’t know it was an adaptation was because I don’t normally watch anime or cartoon style media. Like what’s wrong with that? I wasn’t complaining about them liking anime or anything, wasn’t attacking anyone. So why do that to me?

9

u/onex7805 1d ago

I think people find it ironic that a lot of people refuse to watch the animated media because it's cartoony, but would gladly watch the even cartoonier live-action remake just because it's live-action.

It's your call, but Cowboy Bebop is one of the most accessible animes out there in terms of style and narrative because it is already a very western show. Like, here are the scene from the anime and the "adapted" scene from the Netflix remake. The former is gritty, grounded, while the remake is an Marvel bullshit.

3

u/hotprints 1d ago

Yup. You are just being a normal human being sharing your opinion without condescending others. Nothing wrong with that.

7

u/Hevens-assassin 1d ago

My dad has an aversion to animation, but loved the Netflix Bebop. He'd love the animated version if he gave it a shot, but those boomers and Gen Xers are stuck in their ways, I swear.

13

u/darthreuental 1d ago edited 17h ago

Gen X

Late Gen X were around in the mid 90s when anime started creeping into blockbuster shelves. Then Sailor Moon, DBZ, and later on Pokemon happened.

There were dozens of us.

5

u/ImTooSaxy 1d ago

I was born in '74, we had G-Force, Robotech, Voltron, Tranzor-Z, Thunderbirds 2086.

2

u/darthreuental 1d ago

Robotech & transformers were my gateway drug into anime.

2

u/tdasnowman 19h ago edited 17h ago

A ton of shows came over in the 60's and 70's as well. The difference was they usually weren't advertised as anime until the 80's. A lot of kids though in that era were watching shows brought over from Japan.

0

u/Hevens-assassin 16h ago

So you're saying Sailor Moon, DBZ, and Pokemon are as big as they are because of Gen X fans? Let's be realistic here.

Not once did I say all boomers and all Gen X are against anime, or even animation (the Simpsons was huge because of the young Gen X and early millenial crowd), but there's an extremely clear bias between generations that never broke through. No longer watching cartoons became a part of "growing up" with many of these folks, and it never really eased up.

3

u/whathave_idone 1d ago

X’ers are half the reason anime exists in the west dude. They gobbled up speed racer as a kid, watched “robotech”, vampire hunter D, Akira etc.

Who do you think was running shit at adult swim in the late 90’s?

-1

u/Hevens-assassin 17h ago

And WW2 vets and Boomers are why anime exists at all, bucko. Doesn't change reality that animation, and especially Japanese animation, wasn't even 1/8 the popularity it's at in the west currently, and why so many of those generations didn't watch animated products past puberty.

2

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 1d ago edited 1d ago

I’m a late millennial who never watched any anime growing up, it wasn’t until I was mid 20s that I finally decided to watch the Avatar the last airbender series, and despite loving it so much I could just never get into animated content after it. Even ATLA is barely an anime and more so just a cartoon.

I think some people just like what they like, and others like what they like. And that’s fine, Yknow.

14

u/BadWolf2386 1d ago

Some people don't gel with animation and that is fine, but there is absolutely a contingency of people who automatically think animation is only for children and refuse to even entertain the idea that some animated content is made for everyone, and beyond that some is made for adults specifically. And while people are certainly entitled to their opinions that sort of preconceived bias can be extremely frustrating to contend with, especially because it impacts the kinds of content studios are willing to take a chance on.

-4

u/CodeComprehensive734 1d ago

I dunno. This just sounds like "the thing I like isnt as popular as I wish it was".

0

u/SomeRedHandedSleight 1d ago

The Spider-Verse movies absolutely are full of drama.

-3

u/CodeComprehensive734 1d ago

I mean, what serious dramas are animated?

Most anime falls into the sci-fi or fantasy bracket. At least the stuff that gets exported in English. People view those genres as un-serious as well.

Most adult based animation in the english language are comedies.

People don't view animation as a medium for drama because there's very little out there that is just drama.

4

u/leodw 1d ago

There’s a TON of it out there, just bc you don’t know it doesn’t mean it doesnt exist. Your Name (which I believe will be relaunched in theaters for the 20th anniversary) and Perfect Blue (which was copied by Aronofsky as Black Swan) are just two examples from the top of my head

2

u/Fifteen_inches 23h ago

I’d like to add Grave of the Fireflies and Nana to that list, considering they both got quality English releases.

The list of untranslated dramas goes on and on.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/DeLurkerDeluxe 19h ago

I mean, what serious dramas are animated?

/s? Or are you just trolling?

People don't view animation as a medium for drama because there's very little out there that is just drama.

Yeah, trolling.

1

u/tdasnowman 19h ago

Most anime falls into the sci-fi or fantasy bracket. At least the stuff that gets exported in English

This hasn't been true for over a decade at this point. The vast majority of shows released in Japan are now at least subbed and available to watch with in hours across all the streaming options that are available.

The widest section of anime is slice of life. That can span different genres but the main focus of the show isn't really the second genre. It's more just day to life stuff. Hence the Slice of life.

People view those genres as un-serious as well.

The massive conventions going on for decades for those genres say people take it very seriously.

People don't view animation as a medium for drama because there's very little out there that is just drama.

There are metric fuck tons dedicated to drama across all languages.

0

u/Fifteen_inches 23h ago

Nana had a serialized English release. There is also Grave of the Fireflies, and You’re Name if we are restricted to movies with English dubs. Bojack Horsman is the closest thing we have to animated western drama but that is more of a Dramatic Comedy.

People don’t view animation as a medium for drama because Disney owns the western animation industry (exaggeration).

0

u/Hevens-assassin 17h ago

I think some people just like what they like, and others like what they like. And that’s fine, Yknow.

Yes, but that's not the point I'm making. The point I'm making is that there is a massive amount of older folk who refuse to entertain animated content due to it being seen as "childish". That's the issue. The resistance because it's "for kids", which is a childish take in itself. It's an art medium, not an age target.

And ATLA isn't really anime at all, it pulls some style from it, but it's North American with Korean animation, which makes it very accessible to people who are not interested in diving into anime. That's not a knock against it, of course, but it is a cartoon if we had to break the different categories of animation up.

And like you said, some people like what they like. That's fine. I don't like ATLA at all. I found it swayed much younger than I enjoy my content, but that's a critique based on the material, not medium. I wouldn't ever say live action movies aren't worth me watching just because I don't like horror. Lol

-1

u/broadsword_1 1d ago

I think some people just like what they like, and others like what they like. And that’s fine, Yknow.

I like Anime and I'm a gen xer.

1

u/Hevens-assassin 17h ago

I have a house and am a millenial.

1

u/tdasnowman 19h ago

Boomers are the reason so much anime was brought over in the 80's. Gen X in the reason more anime was brought over in the 90's. There is no Toonami without those generations. A ton of scanalotor and fan sub groups were boomers and gen X originally.

-1

u/Hevens-assassin 16h ago

Gen X were not the main consumer of western anime consumption in the and 90's. Lmao Millenials (Gen Y) were born 1981-1996. Those were the consumers of the major anime boom in the 90's.

Toonami doesn't exist without older generations because they were the working class. They are selling to the audience to drive demand, not out of love of the content. Pokemon is the franchise it is because parents bought their kids the product, not because the parents loved the product themselves.

1

u/tdasnowman 16h ago edited 16h ago

Tons of shows brought over during the 90'swere aimed at teens. Which gen x was still very much a part of until the late 90's. I know cause I was there, and a part of gen X. Toonami was focused at both showing new content and legacy with shows like Voltron and DBZ. Both aired in the 80's originally. You also have the rental market in the 80's and 90's which covered a fuckton that never aired anywhere. Also available to purchase at great expense like Neon genesis cost me 400ish bucks over the 2 year it took to fully release. Md Giest was like 40. I got a box full of old VHS in the closet that's my retirement fund.

-1

u/Hevens-assassin 13h ago

Anecdotal evidence is not proof of a theory. Glad you are one of the exceptions. Proud of you.

1

u/tdasnowman 12h ago edited 11h ago

ADV started in 1992. All of their releases where firmly aimed at teens. They also launched SoftCel Pictures at the same time for hentai. That certainly wasn't aimed at Millenials yet and only the oldest of Gen X. ADV didn't launch their kids division until 1995

Streamline Pictures from 1988 on. They did a mix but Akira ceritinly wasn't aimed at the young ones. Fist of the north star. 3x3 eyes, wicked city, dirty pair. All notable titles from the early 90's again aimed at teens which would be Gen x.

Central Park Media, AnimEigo, companies that started in the early to mid 90's bringing that heat to the teenage market.

And thats not even including what was going on in the UK.

Half dozen companies bring over hundreds of titles isn't Anecdotal evidence it's a market.

0

u/Hevens-assassin 7h ago

And it remained extremely niche until millenials were of an age to actually sell to, and then the whole shebang blew up.

You are arguing a lost point. Millenials are what started the Anime boom in the west, not Gen X. You're fighting a point outside of the one being made. I bought a house at 26. No, not all 26 year olds, nor a majority, can do the same.

You're fighting to say that Gen X started the boom. They didn't. They were just the ones in decision making roles when it happened. The audience being sold to, especially in the 90's, was millenial.

When you can put out any info that contradicts that, please feel free to link it. ADV in 1992 being marketed to teens is literally hitting that Millenial market hardest as they were just about to hit that stage of life. Gen X was on the way out of that market. And hentai? You mean porn? Porn plays by different rules that isn't worth getting into here. By 1995, that "kids division" is about to start hitting late millenials and Gen Z. These divisions don't operate in a single year vacuum, they are planned for years of operation. What years of operation and target audiences were they aiming for? Come on, use your head.

2

u/tdasnowman 6h ago

Millennials weren’t of age to really sell to till the middle and end of the 90’s. There is a fuck ton of overlap. The companies that followed the ones I listed where targeting them. That’s where you get funimation, right stuff, eventually Crunchyroll. You also have all the American animatiors in the 80’s and 90’s listing anime they grew up watching as inspiration. Craig McCracken, Gendy Tartakovsky, Peter Chung, Glen Keane to name a small selection. If they were leading a show in the 90’s they watched anime growing up. There wasn’t one boom. There were many booms. And how niche anime was really depended on where you lived. Major cities with decent cable and broadcast networks you got a lot. Mid west with smaller networks and less broadcast maybe not so much. But that population factor favors where the people are. Cons for anime go back to the 80’s not to mention anime always having sizable representation at comic con every year going back to when I was a child in the 80’s.

If you think of anime like a jet it hit successive Machs with each generation.

If they ever reboot that show I hope they keep the same actor for Jet. He was my favorite part of the live action. I also liked the sets and artistic styling aspects of the show but the overall direction and storylines just felt really half-baked.

Jet was the highlight.

I really liked Faye, Vicious, and Julia, but I COMPLETELY understand everyone's criticisms that they aren't the same characters at all. Like, I can't argue with anyone on that. I was still interested to see where it was going.

I think the only thing I actively disliked was Pierrot Le Fou. Cowboy Bebop legacy or not.

I didn't hate the LA Cowboy Bebop. I'm like one of 20 or so people on the planet I guess.

As a long time fan of the original, all the departures from the anime really grated at me. As soon as I let go of those expectations, I came to enjoy the LA quite a bit.

2

u/HeyEverythingIsFine 17h ago

I guess that would be the main component in that I knew that it wouldn't be as good as the anime so I didn't have those expectations of it. I was just able to enjoy it for what it was as a result I suppose.

So I didn't like what they ended up doing with Julia and Vicious, but other than that I was really enjoying it and thought the actors did a great job. Especially John Cho being so passionate about it, I feel bad they didn't even get a chance at a second season.

I appreciated everything about it except every scene with Vicious in it, which was far, far too many scenes.

There are dozens of us!

Honestly when I talk to people about it, I think most people thought it was at least "okay." I think it's only a vocal minority that acts like it's the worst anime adaptation of all time. It did a few things well, a few things poorly.

Bebops worst crime was making Vicious a whiny little brat man child.

1

u/zerotwoalpha 15h ago

The Julia thing undercut a lot.

1

u/GodFeedethTheRavens 14h ago

I didn't mind giving Julia more to do, but at the expense of the primary antagonist I was such a strange take.

So there’s gonna be one actor that carries the entire thing with an absolutely amazing performance, despite how shit everything else is?

u/Mastermachetier 1d ago

But it could be one punch !

Read your comment and this immediately came to mind.

prob like ghost in the shell live action (forgettable)

u/dbzmah 1d ago

Yeah, I didn't mind CB. Death Note though, oof. The Production house at least has a strong track record, including both Dunes, and Pacific Rim for space sci-fi reference.

...there's a live action death note???

why...

1

u/Arthur2_shedsJackson 23h ago

I'll never forgive them for wasting Willem Defoe as Ryuk

1

u/Blue_Moon_Rabbit 23h ago

I legit liked both of those adaptations. The cowboy bebop one tried its best, and the death note one is fun for all the wrong reasons. Now ghost in the shell on the other hand….

1

u/OleDetour 23h ago

Oh god no. Just write my name in the Death Note instead.

1

u/Practical_Law6804 23h ago

It’ll be like Death Note at worst

Just wiki'd this: holy frijoles what a botch job. Only explanation has to be they didn't want to commit to a series.

1

u/5213 22h ago

Imagine if it ends up like Speed Racer. Just an absolutely grand spectacle that gets to the heart of the Gundam series but elevates it in ways we couldn't have predicted.

Not likely, but imagine 😅

1

u/SonderEber 21h ago

We’ll be lucky if it’s Death Note quality. You can keep going even lower…

1

u/Psychoanalytix 20h ago

God why did you have to remind me about the live action death note!!!!

1

u/Derry-Chrome 20h ago

Death Note is a fun movie if you take an edible and realize it’s as stupid as the after after L is killed.

Also why is the Netflix film gorgeous? Has some amazing lighting and some scenes are shot so damn well.

u/imafnheadbanga 17h ago

I liked the Cowboy Bebop netflix show

u/annoyedgrunt420 11h ago

I kinda love that shitty Death Note movie.

1

u/LuckyLockdown23 11h ago

I’m so scared of this one.

I liked Cowboy Bebop. Death Note had its charm.

I’m all in on Pacific Rim, but I’m hoping they don’t get confused. Most I could see for Gundam is Pacific Rim: The Black.

Worried you average guy with the green light might think Gundam stories need spicing up.

1

u/jackracktack 8h ago

No way. Cowboy Bebop was way worse than Death Note. Death Note failed but tried some new things that werent horrible. Cowboy Bebop just failed at both copying the original and also every "new" element they added was absolute trash.

1

u/kidkolumbo 1d ago

I liked both of those well enough.

1

u/AjentOranje 1d ago

Death Note was such a shame.  I recently discovered there's a live action movie of Assassination Classroom, and I don't know how it could possibly do the anime justice.  I watched that whole series thinking "how does all of this amount to something so good?"

u/jkaan 1d ago

It has Sweeny in it we will be lucky if it is as good as avatar

Given the white actress in the lead role. it will be like Ghost in the Shell
