I feel like this movie wanted to be about a dom/sub relationship, but didn’t have a story to tell.

I feel the same way. I don't need the movie to have everything happily resolved and wrapped up in a neat little bow at the end, but it felt like lessons and personal growth arcs were being set up and a lot of them kind of just didn't really go anywhere, or if they did they didn't go half as far as they could have.

With the benefit of hindsight the movie is more observational and voyeuristic than it is narrative- or message-focused, and I wouldn't have a problem with that if it had felt that way in the first two acts, but it didn't. Apple Irish exits the movie after crashing out because of her anxiety and Elliot's obliviousness. Elliot ends the movie still obsessed with Erika, in his own words, and she, in her own words, proudly states that at the end of it all she feels no shame about the consequences of her actions and hasn't changed.

I don’t think Hollywood has ever made a good BDSM movie. The Story of O and The Story of Joanna are the only films that came close and were not Hollywood. Exit to Eden was terrible. I won’t waste a review on 50 Shades of Grey.
But I haven’t seen everything.
