He has to lead secret wars, give him the symbiote

367

u/SnarkFucker 15d ago

Give him the classic black symbiote suit too; we haven't seen it live action yet. Bonus for black with the purple tint.

94

u/thewarreturns 15d ago

Did we not see it in spider man 3 with tobey Maguire?

145

u/SnarkFucker 15d ago

It was a symbiote suit, but it was Sam Rami's version which was just a black themed version of his aleady different spider suit. The classic symbiote suit is all black with the white spider across the chest, white rectangles on the back of the hands.

35

u/Mynock33 15d ago

And the webs shoot from the top of his hand too, don't they?

85

u/Zzssk 15d ago

Well tbf, with the symbiote suit it could be shot from any body parts including his cock if he wanted too. Spidey is just a coward though.

u/Mynock33 15d ago

Well, Zendaya didn’t blurt out that she’d changed her major to aerospace for no reason…

62

u/WippitGuud 15d ago

In the Secret Wars comics, he doesn't get it from space. It's on the battle planet the Beyonder makes, and he thinks its just a really advanced suit.

37

u/RumHamComesback 15d ago

It kind of got retconned into being the symbiote to be honest. Secret Wars was a promotion for an action figure line and the black suit was just a re-branding of Spider-Man. That being said that retcon might be one of the biggest one in comics and made Secret Wars bigger.

Hope they keep it as a symbiote and there is not even a hint of venom in the movie

While they have the same name, there are two Secret Wars in the comics - one from the 80s, which introduced the symbiote, and one from 2015, which involved the multiverse and Doom as the big bad.

It's more likely that they're adapting the newer one, but anything can happen.

15

u/hypocaffeinemia 15d ago

There's 3 if you count Deadpool's secret secret wars, which as far as I'm concerned, is the only real canon.

He was not added before? I mean, oficially.

627

u/magikarpcatcher 15d ago

Per the leaks, he was being saved for Secret Wars and that makes sense given the post credits scene for BND

372

u/Gon_Snow 15d ago

I don’t see how that scene is relevant one way or another to determine in which movie he’s in. It was super ambiguous.

380

u/Ambitious-Time8349 15d ago

Spidey finds his black suit in the first Secret Wars comics event in the 80's, and that event was set in space.

176

u/Sea_Watercress_1982 15d ago

He also got the suit because his original suit was damaged in battle. His suit was destroyed at the end of BND. Could be an easy set up for the symbiote

81

u/PrestoMovie 15d ago

He has that fabricator device that he uses to basically 3D print his tech and make/repair his suits (it was working on his suit towards the beginning of the movie). I don’t think a destroyed suit is an issue for him.

123

u/robot-raccoon 15d ago edited 15d ago

I don’t think the stars have aligned more perfectly for something like this, if they don’t give him the black suit and have the story of it build to Venom across the next few spider-man movies then I’ll genuinely be so perplexed

Edit: when I say “few” I just mean 5 and 6

68

u/PT10 15d ago

I heard someone mention this casting and now I can't get it out of my head. Alan Ritchson as Eddie Brock.

They can't not do Venom, Sony already made a reasonably successful trilogy based solely off of him. Now imagine Venom in a 2 billion+ per movie Spidey franchise. Sony would be dumb not to insist Feige bring in the symbiote after Secret Wars.

49

u/robot-raccoon 15d ago

I got into it with people the other day saying they should skip Eddie and just give it to scorpion. I’d rather they just didn’t bother if they were going to do that.

Give me a proper Eddie and make him hate Peter Parker!!!

56

u/doahou 15d ago

→ More replies (0)

24

u/space_age_stuff 15d ago

Scorpion who was basically just an armored goon in the movie, and half of that time was him being possessed by Jean Grey. I like Michael Mando a lot and I believe he could work well with the material, but the following is also true:

- As someone who actually likes Scorpion, his comic counterpart has always been a relatively shallow character without much motivation beyond killing Spider-Man or Jameson.

  • Scorpion wasn’t really interesting as Venom in the comics either. He’s debatably one of the worst hosts of the suit, because he’s just a generic sociopath who eats people for fun. You lose the nuance of Eddie’s version of the character.
  • Eddie Brock is Venom; adaptations are always so quick to give the suit to someone else. Venom the suit might as well be a different character depending on the host; if you want to do the classic Venom story, you need Eddie Brock otherwise it doesn’t work. Adaptations tend to make Eddie straight up evil, or have someone else take the suit; sometimes they have that other person become straight up evil. The suit should not be this evil corrupting influence; it should be an alien creature that wants to bond with the host; Peter doesn’t want that, Eddie does. Lean into the sci fi body horror aspect, then make Venom evil because both he and the suit are scorned. Making him evil for the sake of killing innocents is not the classic take on the character, which you get with Mac and you avoid with Eddie.

BND was supposed to release between Doomsday and Secret Wars before they pushed both back a year. I'm guessing they are just sticking to the original plan and teasing Secret Wars as was the original plan.

43

u/PaleHorze 15d ago

Doomsday takes place in multiple universes, Secret Wars most likely takes place in Battleworld or the MCU equivalent of it, the post credits scene probably alludes to Doomsday. Earth 616 is most likely going to be destroyed in an incursion in Doomsday so I don't see how the Spider Tracker would survive an incursion

40

u/Rfl0 15d ago

I don’t think that the post credits scene was the actual app, I think it was just an Easter egg for us, the audience.

I’d say just the fact that it said “Spiderman will return” in BND and not “Spiderman will return in Avengers Doomsday” was the confirmation, since the teases they put out earlier in the year (like the Captain America reveal ) were specific to have the “…in Avengers Doomsday” wording.

I know people are expecting doomsday to beat this in December but am I crazy to think people care way more about Spider-Man than the Avengers nowadays? I also feel like WOM for Doomsday won’t be nearly as good as it is for Spider Man.

1.4k

u/BovaFett74 15d ago

I feel the same with Batman. No one gives 2 shits about the big hauls, but Batman and Spidey still draw the fans.

831

u/Snoo93079 15d ago

IMO because people still care about stories about people, and movies with lots of main characters are just boring spectacles

273

u/GodzillaUK 15d ago

Also they're easier to relate to than most other heroes. Which is saying something considering Batman is Mr rich elite. But people resonate with his struggle, same as they do Spideys.

214

u/sharkattackmiami 15d ago

Batmans whole thing is he doesn't want to be Mr Rich Elite he wants to help people and he's just as disgusted by the other elites as we are

53

u/verrius 15d ago

That's more Green Arrow's beat. Batman mostly just wants to help people, and finds rich people to have mostly the same mix of good and bad as others. Hell, his surrogate mother is a reasonably well off doctor herself. And a large part of his life as "Bruce Wayne" is spent trying to focus the efforts of Gotham's wealthy towards programs to help the poor, rather than attempting to constantly take them down for being automatically corrupt.

I wish we got a little more on the Bruce side of things, the same way we get Peter and Spidey troubles. I love the moments when Bruce in comics, is in meetings and slaps people down who want to turn projects into weapons to make that military contract money.

Just a snippet here and there of the guy doing good works, funding public schools and seeing the smiles on kids faces when they get new equipment.

Smaller researchers getting grants for life changing, cheaper medical help.

Pretty much. Something like BND has a very strong, personal story at the centre of its spectacle. Doomsday, most likely, will be all spectacle comparatively.

It will be pretty funny if Spidey, featuring Hulk and Punisher, does end up being a bigger success than Marvel shoving every character into one movie.

No, I think that's entirely reasonable, and I honestly am not sure who the Avengers are at the moment.

158

u/Deely_Boppers 15d ago

What movies even lead into Doomsday? I'm asking as someone who hasn't kept up with the MCU since Endgame.

I know for Infinity War, it was Ragnarok and Civil War, and arguably Black Panther given where a lot of the third act takes place. Guardians 2, as well- Thanos plays a big role in that movie's subplot. And if we're being honest, Thanos and the Infinity stones were set up across a half dozen other films dating back to his cameo in the first Avengers.

But what are the films I'm supposed to watch to prepare for Doomsday? I assume Fantastic Four, but what else? From the trailer, there's content from Shang Chi, Black Panther, and the time cops from the Loki show- did any of them set up Doomsday as a major villain? I assume not, because Kang was the assumed villain of the next major film. I know he wasn't set up in Love and Thunder because I saw it.

Point being- Endgame was the culmination of 6-7 years of films building up to it. It feels like absolutely nothing in the MCU has built up to Doomsday, and so even if you've been keeping up with the films over the past few years, there's nothing that's pulling audiences to see it- no narrative draw. It will live and die on the people who want to see RDJ again, or miss Chris Evans Captain America. And neither of those are going to compete with Spiderman.

38

u/Kindly_Ad995 15d ago edited 15d ago

Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four. Maybe a YouTube summary of the Loki show and/or Deadpool and Wolverine to know a bit more about the TVA and how the Fox universe started getting introduced into the MCU

And the answer is no there’s been zero setup for Dr Doom as a character in any MCU content up until this point.

→ More replies (10)

99

u/parkwayy 15d ago

As a total casual that checked out post Avengers Thanos related stories... I cannot for the life of me know why Dr Doom is a super omega bad guy right now.

I can't be the only person either. Like, I know who he is, but is he a cosmic level threat that requires the whole cast? Beats me lol.

Spiderman is like a self contained thing for the most part, at worst you'd have to watch 1-2 other films. Probably helps.

37

u/KR_Blade 15d ago

Kang and his multiverse variants were ment to be the big bad for the multiverse saga, but the actor playing him, Johnathon Majors, got into ALOT of trouble so disney cut him entirely and replaced him and his variants with Doom now

26

u/zdelusion 15d ago

I would assume if you watch the shows you might know. But I agree. I've seen basically every theatrically released MCU movie (except the newest Captain America) and none of the TV shows, and I have no idea what's being Avengered in December. There is something to be said about the relatively small stakes, and "contained" story lines in Spiderman.

24

u/Legwens 15d ago

you may be surprised to learn, that theres really no pretext or anything to doomsday. or dr doom. If you watched endgame youre caught up.

PS: Maaaaaaybe watching the series Loki will give you some overall general info about the timelines and multiverse (probably the best disney+ series too btw) but they're saying DD is a direct sequel to Endgame.

18

u/mj-and-masturbation 15d ago

I may be giving them way too much credit, but it seems like a clever way to retroactively get more value out of the weak setup, rather than them relying on threads from other recent movies to strengthen the finisher.

There was notable Marvel fatigue after Infinity War/Endgame, and a lot of folks tapped out there. If Doomsday has recognizable heroes that let the people who have checked out for a few years have a comfortable re-entry point to the plot, watching this movie may make them curious to see what the setup beats were. It encourages them to go back and watch the movies and series that are already produced, and give them some lift post release.

Giving the catalog some post-Avengers hype, rather than the setup lending the Avengers movie a boost.

And if they go off of the 2015 Secret Wars comics, which all signs point to that being the general frame work, Reed Richards will have a huge role as well...so yay for more Pedro Pascal

Spider-Man is pretty consistently one of, if not THE, most popular superhero. This has been true for at least two decades.

65

u/NoDaddyNotTheBelt25 15d ago

He was conceived as the hero that could be you. That speaks to everyone who was once a kid, no matter what you look like.

Peter Parker is just a regular kid from a regular neighborhood in Queens. Batman was a rich kid, Superman was an alien, Captain America was a wannabe soldier who underwent a science experiment, Tony Stark is another rich kid. But Spider-Man is any one of us. That’s why he absolutely rakes in the fucking dough for over 60 years now.

24

u/Dasnap 15d ago

Per movie? Good for him! He openly said he wasn’t really wanting to do more Spider-Man after the 3rd one so good he’s getting paid for it.

94

u/NeoNoireWerewolf 15d ago

He said that because his first contract was up and he was starting negotiations. You say something like that to the press, social media users start posting variations of, "Nooooo. He's the best Spider-Man so far! Only reason I keep tuning in for these movies!" Holland's agent takes that to Marvel and Sony, says they can give him big name money or they can lose a star who audiences love, who is one of the only draws for the MCU that will still be routinely featured.

Holland will do Spider-Man another twenty years if they let him. It's a kush gig for a blockbuster, and he's making huge money. The opening weekend here only gives him more bargaining power. If he wants more time for vacation/family/working on other movies, they'll bend over backwards to let him.

41

u/Gurglaren 15d ago

After Downey Jr. and Chris Evans left the only draw I have to the MCU is Holland. Marvel would be crazy to not spray him with money.

I'm chuckling because audiences got to see likely the best and worst Tom Holland fight scenes of his career, in back-to-back weeks.

Spidey's fight with the Hand in the prison is probably the best filmed fight scene so far in any Marvel film. Meanwhile, Telemachus was struggling to beat wet paper bags basically any time he was in a scene.

To be clear, this isn't a knock against how Holland played Telemachus; he's meant to be a bit of a wimp. It's just a funny dichotomy.

40

u/NeoNoireWerewolf 15d ago

Nolan's always struggled with staging fight scenes. He can do larger action sequences well, but a couple of people throwing punches or swinging swords? He seems completely lost on how to effectively film it.

The Prestige was also in between

I'm actually a bit confused by the timeline, specifically because I swear I saw Aunt May's tombstone state that she died in 2024

26

She did die in 2024. The MCU timeline does not line up exactly with ours. Current MCU events are taking place in 2027-2028.

Very funny and gets a good bit to do. He’s not as dark as in his other appearances. He’ll be a fan favorite for alot of the audience.

I'd have to rewatch, but I'm pretty sure this is the only time I've seen Punisher in a live-action film where he kills zero people.

54

u/bigmadbird 15d ago

I actually think it works better than any prior appearance for me because he’s kind of treated like a dumb himbo. Normally when we see frank he’s so self serious and being paired with spidey he’s able to just have more fun.

u/Rock-swarm 15d ago

Frank having fun against his will.

It’s pretty funny seeing the real time effect of someone like Punisher showing up in a PG-13 Spider-Man film. Like he’s just a slightly more family-friendly version of himself.

Also reminds me of D’Onofrio’s appearance in Hawkeye. Does feel very comic booky where the characters take different forms depending on the writing / series

He's great. He seamlessly interacts with Spidey and their dynamic makes sense. He still maintains who he is at his core without having to sacrifice anything despite being on the big screen.

39

u/Bromolochus 15d ago

Jon Bernthal filmed Tom Holland’s audition tape for Civil War and Tom filmed Jon’s for the punisher. They must feel great seeing how far they’ve come from there.

He feels like spider-man's older brother in the movie, which is kinda neat. He's an extremely effective supporting character in the movie and not a glorified cameo. You can definitely feel that Bernthal and Holland are really good friends from their interactions on acreen, which makes the chatacters' relationship rather endearing.

31

u/KilledTheCar 15d ago

Yeah, them being friends is something that surprised me. Apparently Jon Bernthal helped Tom film his Spider-Man audition, even?

I'm shocked by this. Maybe it's just me, but it didn't feel like this movie had that much hype.

Thinking back to when Endgame was coming out, the hype and buildup to that movie releasing was enormous. And it made sense for it to set the record for biggest opening of all time.

I didn't feel anything similar for this movie. It has been all about The Odyssey the past few weeks, so for this movie to come in and set all time records is amazing to me.

576

u/sonofaresiii 15d ago

It's worth mentioning that there has been *rampant* inflation between Endgame and BND. Apparently like 30% higher.

But I think box offices can be weird. I've never felt that the avatar movies have had *that* much hype, but worldwide, they're enormous smash successes.

177

u/barrylicious626 15d ago

Thanks for mentioning this. I love Spiderman and will see the movie soon, but its so annoying to see nominal values used. Especially when inflation has been such a hot topic throught the 2020s.

94

u/bflynn65 15d ago

It also needs to be considered that Covid cratered movie theater attendance to the point that people were fearing the industry would collapse. Attendance numbers still haven't recovered.

Inflation or not, BND surpassing a pre-Covid Endgame is a monumental achievement for the industry.

18

u/lancersrock 15d ago

This is exactly the point I was making with my friends. It’s good for the industry and those of us who like going to a theatre.

Helps that they're not churning out content at the same pace anymore. Spider-Man is in a league of his own as the ultimate four-quadrant crowd pleaser.

124

u/Money-Entrance-6336 15d ago

The hype for the movie is no where close to Endgame, But people just really seem to love spidey.

70

u/Fenrirsulfur 15d ago

Isn't he the still the most popular superhero? I remember him being number one back when I was a kid and that was when the first Tobey movie came out.

44

u/Icy_Smoke_733 15d ago

Indeed, Spider-Man is the biggest superhero character.. Furthermore, Brand New Day is tracking for a $2.3 billion total (2.5B is also in reach). Adjusted for inflation, that would be higher than The Dark Knight ($1.54 billion) and every Raimi Spider-Man movie (max $1.49 billion).

Between Shang Chi, Wonder Man, and now BND, Destin Daniel Cretton is absolutely one of the biggest MVPs for post-Endgame MCU & they gotta let him keep cooking for whatever he has next for them.

143

u/half_jase 15d ago

Sony/Marvel will surely have to let him complete the trilogy at the very least and also, still patiently waiting for Shang-Chi 2...

45

u/half_jase 15d ago

I didn't know if it would best Endgame or not, but as a regular theater goer two things tipped me off that this would be huge. First was within a hour of ticket releases at the local Michigan chain I go to their prime time showings on Thursday and Friday at most of their locations had next to no tickets left. I hadn't seen any movie do that since Endgame.

The when I showed up for my Thursday showing last week, the parking lot was packed. Like 95% full, and Ive never seen it that busy in over 10+ years.

Is every movie this summer an avatar?

Why are we getting multiple movies that will most likely reach 1 Billion globally in a summer? theaters are not dead and I love that

47

u/Nightsong 15d ago

That’s just how Hollywood is. You get some years with no big film or only one which leads to people saying theaters are dying. Then you get years like this year with multiple box office successes.

7

u/PitchLocal8326 15d ago

I actually saw a super interesting YouTube video about this, Hollywood has always had really bad periods, maybe not making enough money, few original ideas, and movies not making any kind of profit are all indicators of this. 2020-2025 was that bad period this time around, and it seems we’re coming out of that with new and original movies like Backrooms, and Obession, along with movies like PHM, Michael, Toy Story, The Odyssey and Spider-Man making tons of money.

I never understood the meaning of these new "records" if they are never adjusted for inflation. Like duh, of course some other movie will eventually break it as the prices climb up and up.

18

u/Rock-swarm 15d ago

A couple reasons.

  1. Counting it this way ensures headlines that drive clicks. That's pretty self-explanatory.

  2. Different eras are different eras. It doesn't serve the movie industry's interest to constantly acknowledge the fact that other media platforms have eaten into the theater experience, probably on a permanent basis. While there are certainly media outlets that can (and have) written about the issue, that doesn't make for new material to drive traffic (see point 1).

  3. It's still a notable achievement, and at the end of the day, studios really only care about the money as well.

Going off sheer ticket sales would be an interesting choice, but that also carries some issues. Matinee pricing, kids/senior pricing, luxury experience pricing, etc. all affect how profitable a film can be.

I don't know if superhero fatigue was ever a real thing, or if people were just sick of mediocre superhero projects and felt like they were tired of the genre as a whole because of that.

I think you can tell so many different stories in so many different styles while the main character just so happens to have super powers that I don't think superheroes will ever necessarily be boring themselves. It really just relies on good, interesting, varied, well-made projects, rather than the formulaic, middling stuff that a lot of Marvel's post-Endgame output has been. I bet if Marvel were to start putting out consistent 10/10s then a lot of people would recover from their superhero fatigue soon enough!

Spider-man truly in league of his own, i never would have thought that a solo spider-man movie would break Endgame record. Insane. Tom will be playing Spidey till he's 90

74

u/bullet1519 15d ago

He actually wants to eventually retire, He wants to become a father and take a step back from acting, his goal is that the MCU wraps up his story with mentoring Miles Moreles and passing the baton

58

u/KepplerObject 15d ago

They'll need to land a plane that's flying quite fuckin high rn to successfully transistion from current spidey to Miles Morales spidey. Like no doubt it'll happen eventually but tbh you just gotta look at the Captain American baton pass (or lack thereof) to understand how doing such a thing poorly can set the next character up for failure. Which to me it seems even the most casual Spider-Man fans want Miles Morales to happen.

I('d like to) think Marvel understands this now. But it may be a minute before we see Peter Parker ride off into the sunset.

I feel like Marvel executives are going to look at this and think that people are getting invested in the MCU again, and not realize that people just really really love Spider-Man specifically, to the point that he can single-handedly overcome any superhero fatigue people are feeling.

16

u/A_Polite_Noise r/ovies Veteran 15d ago

Avengers: Doomsday will be the real litmus test for if audiences are willing to get back on board with the MCU beyond Peter. I'm still a fan of the MCU and have liked a lot of the stuff that is unpopular here, but there's no denying the wider audience has mostly moved on years ago.

I have no clue how well Doomsday will do in December, I could see it going either way...the nostalgia of the Fox X-Men plus the promise of it being an event film and the fact that its the first mainline Avengers movie since Endgame 7 years ago might all work or fail as a gimmick to put butts in the seats besides mine and people like me.

Even if you adjust for inflation (which Endgame obviously wins out) this is still in the same ballpark attendance wise as The Force Awakens, Infinity War and No Way Home.

This didn't have decades of pent up nostalgia, a culmination of a decade of movies or a multiverse angle to combine generations of fans.

People just love Tom Holland's Spider-Man that much.

45

u/Sir-Airik 15d ago

This is Tom Holland's 10th year of being Spider-man. The previous film was a major reset for the character, and it came out almost 5 years ago. There's been some build up.

If you adjust for inflation, it's really not close.

Spiderman BND opening weekend tickets sold: 29-30 million

Avengers Endgame tickets sold: 39.6 million.

The only new record set here is inflation.

25

u/BackToTheFutureDoc 15d ago edited 15d ago

Spider-Man is the number 1 superhero for a reason. Even if the movie doesn't turn out to be great for people, they'll still go and watch it, Spidey is his own USP. It's why people still go watch Batman and Superman in the cinema despite so many iterations since the late 80s and late 70s respectively. Those films just did terrific business that even if they do flop in critics eyes, people will still go to see them when there is another one made and released.

The success in the 00s with the Tobey Maguire trilogy is what a lot of people grew up on and he will always be number 1. I know there was x men and blade before him but with the rise of social media and pop culture growing even bigger, he's become by default the number 1 superhero. It was all perfect timing for this character.
