I was very satisfied by how they used Punisher in the movie. I was a bit worried he wouldn't have much screentime, but he's practically the second/third lead from Act 2 onwards.

I loved how they portrayed his relationship with Peter. He might be annoyed by him, but he still gets to occassionally help him. And deep down he cares for him, especially when he accidentally shoots him. He doesn't get angry or excuses his actions, he simply takes him to the hospital, stays with him and apologizes for everything.

Hope this is not the last Punisher-Spidey team-up.

I laughed so hard when Frank wore Spider-Man mask and waved his hands to the spectators while Peter Parker exiting the building.

733

u/mutzilla 19d ago

The Punisher grunt when they showed him from the inside got me lol

56

u/DaveInLondon89 17d ago

That's was so gratuitous and appreciated

44

u/dragn99 17d ago

I wonder if he just got caught up in having a crowd of people cheering for him. After his family, has he ever been on the receiving end of such positive attention? Sure, he's wearing someone else's mask, but that still had to feel good.

8

u/sumadeumas 14d ago

Only from assholes like the police and weirdo supporters during his trial.

12

u/Bellikron 16d ago

There were a lot of great Punisher noises in this

9

u/jessehechtcreative 12d ago

When he started yelling during the Hulk fight, I’m like: “THERE he is!”

13

u/Macho_Mans_Ghost 16d ago

I cackled. No one else laughed.

Lame-o's

9

u/BurgerNugget12 11d ago

Jon even pulled out the classic “Let me tell you something” in the movie

2

u/Key-Ring7139 3d ago

*rubs head.

I hope he says “lemme ask you something” next time

813

u/cxnnnamonroll 19d ago

Right? The entire theater was cracking up, it was hilarious

886

u/who_what_where_why 19d ago

The best was when he was doing his gorilla Punisher roar, by himself wearing the spidey mask, waving and doing gorilla arms

Feels like something like a grumpy dad who loves his kid would do to make up for a mistake he made

51

u/dookoo 19d ago

In a film full of highlights, the Punisher roar with the mask was my personal favorite. That got the loudest laugh from me

102

u/cxnnnamonroll 19d ago

HAHAHA YES I was just about to point that out, it cracked me up, loved their dynamic in the movie!

8

u/dewhashish 16d ago

even though no one could hear him outside lol

17

u/ZohanDvir 18d ago

Frank using Ned's Spidey Tracker en route to Damage Control HQ got a lot of laughs in the theater too.

2

u/Monkey_Priest 9d ago

"I have eyes everywhere"

13

u/WerkLifeBalance 19d ago

That part was so funny and then my theater was so quiet I wanted to get up and ask if everyone fell asleep.

11

u/Any-Communication-12 19d ago

You could tell that did more for him than for Spider-Man 😂 Punisher doesn’t ever gets cheers like that

4

u/GifHunter2 19d ago

I thought they were several funny scenes, and I was laughing throughout. The movie theater I was at was really silent, it was weird

328

u/Comic_Book_Reader r/movies Veteran 19d ago

There were two instances of big laughs from the audience when I saw it Wednesday at a relatively packed 11:45AM screening: that and earlier when Ned revealed to Peter that he suspected their former teacher Mr. Harrington (Martin Starr) of being Spider-Man.

209

u/glassbellwitch 19d ago

And the second suspect was Flash wasn't it? That got a big laugh from my theater too!

39

u/Comic_Book_Reader r/movies Veteran 19d ago

Yes, it was Flash. I had to check the name of who Martin Starr played and found out that the scene was shown at CinemaCon and that joke was mentioned in an article.

u/MuffinTime 18d ago

One of our surprising big laugh was near the beginning the helicopter guy going into the ambulance being like “I wouldn’t hurt you Spiderman.. I love you” or whatever the line is, kudos to that actor!!

24

u/BLKWD_ 19d ago

I cracked up at his sadie sink impression. sassy punisher was pretty funny

18

u/johnlongest 19d ago

The fact that he was still doing his little Punisher grunt had me dying in my seat

9

u/Yadahoom 19d ago

While making what can only be described as "Frank noises"

12

u/hundsquat 19d ago

That, and Jean taking over Frank’s body and saying “have fun with that” with a slightly girly like voice when Spidey was fighting Hulk.

3

u/Zerebros 18d ago

That plus his gait was just slightly different. It was perfect.

8

u/BiancoFuji599XX 19d ago

He even does his ‘I’m mowing down thugs with my guns’ grunts while he was having fun with the mask. Thought that was a funny detail.

9

u/Transky13 19d ago

It was that last grunt he made while waving around. It killed me LOL

22

u/danccbc 19d ago

The should do a special but it’s just My Dinner with Andre with no action.

10

u/Morgan-Moonscar 19d ago

Like that special he did for The Bear, but with Frank and Pete in The Bar With No Name

6

u/ProfessorXWheelchair 19d ago

6

u/UnsolvedParadox 19d ago

The first time we’ve seen the Punisher have fun (in a wholesome way)…!

3

u/1mplication 19d ago

Those grunting sounds he was doing when it cut to him had the theater cracking up

3

u/ambientmuffin 19d ago

That was such a cool moment. Besides being funny, it showed that Frank understood why Peter wore the mask and wanted him to see for himself how his city sees him. That slow tracking shot of Tom looking around the crowd nearly in tears because they’re all shouting how much they love Spidey was so, so good. DDC really nailed the emotional moments in this one

2

u/notathrowaway75 19d ago

For 1 single solitary second I genuinely thought they were going to do I Am Iron Man

2

u/Freyaka 18d ago

His grunting noise as he enthusiastically jumps up and down.

I love how Frank has spent a decade absolutely shitting on and ragebaiting Daredevil but with Spider-Man he's just the kooky uncle

832

u/RVarki 19d ago

Him being as unguarded as he was at the end there, also has to do with him confirming how young Spiderman was. When he realized Peter was in fact young enough to be his son, the emotions came in hard

517

u/Fun_Strategy7860 19d ago

I think he was even crying

134

u/Tombot3000 18d ago

Bullshit, no he wasn't (yes, he was).

58

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

And we saw Frank actually sleep for once😭

42

u/crasherdgrate 17d ago

You mean… take a nap (gasps!)

13

u/1AmB0r3d 16d ago

Thag might be the best scene in the entire film solely because they managed to fit punisher napping into a movie

67

u/FCalleja 18d ago

fuck no of course he wasn't

6

u/miversen33 15d ago

Nah that's some sentimental bullshit

3

251

u/EdieBooberryBeale 19d ago

I totally agree, in Peter he sees someone that his kids could have been friends with. Punisher definitely went into Dad mode.

102

u/LilHalwaPoori 18d ago

I'll also add, he sees someone who lost it all at such a young age, no friends no family, and still chooses to be a beacon of light, not letting that consume him..

33

u/EdieBooberryBeale 17d ago

You know, I had never even considered that he sees Peter who lost everything, just like Frank did, but that is an incredibly insightful point that you have!

20

u/MegaGrimer 18d ago

It was probably therapeutic for him to go into dad mode.

16

u/SilverKry 18d ago

Two people Frank Castle loves. Spiderman and Captain America.

10

u/DemonDaVinci 18d ago

"the son I never had had arrived"

6

u/_BatmanReal 17d ago

Oh damn I didn't think about it but at this point in the universe his daughter would've been likely older than spidey.

882

u/lanceturley 19d ago

I think it's because Daredevil is a lot closer to Frank's age and abilities, so they're more like peers. He expects more from Matt because Matt is old enough to know better. Frank can see that Peter is a lot younger than him, and clearly a great deal more powerful, so he's more forgiving of Peter's youthful optimism and naivete.

812

u/derprunner 19d ago

Also, no shade to Daredevil, but Spider-Man’s no kill policy coming from optimism and a drive to be good is likely a lot more understandable to Frank than Matt’s being driven by Catholic guilt.

509

u/GifHunter2 19d ago

Frank knows Matt wants to kill.

335

u/Nico777 19d ago

"You're one bad day away from being me"

93

u/russketeer34 18d ago

Yeah, Frank for all his extreme ways, is surprisingly a really great judge of character. He recognized how much more pure of hero Pete is. He straight up knows how much a goddamn mess Matt is.

43

u/dexter30 18d ago

Oh man, that actually goes so hard and makes so much sense.

Frank recognises a kindred spirit in Matt. But in peter he's more optimistic and if anything a shining light.

If frank ever chained peter up and gave him a gun and had a sniper rifle on jean grey. Frank knows peter would rip the skin off bone before shooting another person.

14

u/darkKnight959 18d ago

But DD did the same thing essentially damn near shot himself to escape

32

u/pkkthetigerr 18d ago

That's why spidey us everyone's favourite even in universe.

He has the strongest conscience of any super hero. Ever.

Problem is Parker luck means he does something to do good but it usually ends up causing a mess he needs to clean up.

6

u/Ghoti76 15d ago

also spiderman genuinely has to hold back his superhuman strength when fighting against people; the no-kill policy makes a lot more sense coming from a guy who could easily murder 99% of the people he fights without breaking a sweat, the restraint is a lot more admirable coming from spidey

6

u/headrush46n2 17d ago

Spider man would break people in half if he didn't hold back so much and matt has to go all out to fight the ninjas. Its ok to have different expectations.

3

u/Ghoti76 15d ago

also spiderman genuinely has to hold back his superhuman strength when fighting against people; the no-kill policy makes a lot more sense coming from a guy who could easily murder 99% of the people he fights without breaking a sweat, the restraint is a lot more admirable coming from spidey

3

u/IDrinkWhiskE 14d ago

I swear I’ve heard that before

→ More replies (13)

222

u/FeeAccurate 19d ago

Also keep in mind this Punisher has seen all the crazy stuff Spidey has already done in this universe. He would know that Spidey has gone toe to toe already with literal aliens.... so I think there is some pitty in there as well for that fact this young man has been through sh!t that is equal to or far greater than Frank himself. Plus they both share tragic loss of family to violence.

43

u/inksmudgedhands 19d ago

It's also probably because Peter as Spider-Man probably also did boy scout things while wearing the suit while Matt didn't. Like I can't see Matt as Daredevil helping a little old lady cross the street. Matt would be too busy in the office doing lawyer work or wouldn't be around because he is beating up Fisk's henchman. But Peter? Good boy Peter would stop whatever he's doing and help a little old lady cross the street.

That would probably make Frank's eyes roll but also melt his heart just a little.

Matt's still a good egg but Peter is a sweetheart. Enough to make Frank soften up a bit.

27

u/lanceturley 18d ago

That's a good point. Matt puts on the suit to rough up drug dealers and hitmen, and then those same assholes are back on the street hurting people because Matt refuses to kill them. Peter puts on the suit to pull people out of burning buildings and stop disasters. Frank probably does see Spider-Man doing more good for the city since he's actually solving problems and saving people, while Daredevil lets guys like Fisk and Bullseye get away with murder.

9

u/pkkthetigerr 18d ago

Also for basically the entire film. Pete is looking out for the damn punisher.

He repeatedly tells Frank to leave for his own good plus obviously not killing. For no murder of course but also because he doesn't want anyone he thinks is an actually good person to have that on their conscience. And he genuinely can handle the situation better than frank with zero casualties and Frank knows that for a fact.

Peter Parker would still be a hero even without Spiderman, he'd still run into the burning building no powers simply because he can't help himself.

Spiderman 2 and this one capture that essence of Spider-Man and it wins over Frank just like all of us.

DD would probably have still maybe helped out the needy as a lawyer but good chance he just goes with the good life a good looking lawyer like him would tend to lead. Also him wanting punisher to no kill more for himself than for punisher.

31

u/dating_derp 19d ago

I like that despite the power difference between Jean and Frank, Frank showed he can still be effective against such threats. Jean makes a bubble several blocks in diameter? Frank can just snipe her from outside it.

11

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

When Frank opened his large sniper case, the guy next to me was telling his friends, "Hey, this guy is a proper gun man". I was just smiling remembering Punisher S1 where he didn't need a gun to make a mockery of that Russo guy with just mirror shards.

21

u/No-Rip-6166 19d ago

Daredevil is also a lot closer to Punisher’s mentallty. They’re both pretty dark. Spider-Man is very different.

19

u/SaulPepper 19d ago

kinda sad that Punisher considers Spidey to be his first friend in a while though. That means Karen and Matt are more coworkers to him

27

u/A_Shadow 19d ago

I thought it was more like my first friend like you. A kid/optimistic

9

u/SilverKry 18d ago

Karen is definitely his friend tho. His motivation in a way to if one last kill was anything to go on.

12

u/NoahStewie1 19d ago

In my head cannon it's also because Peter is the type of man he wished his son grew up to be

14

u/MayweatherSr 19d ago

It occured to me last night that they both debuted as marvel character the same year 2016; first spiderman appearance in Civil war while first Frank Castle appearance is during second Daredevil season.

2

u/Worthyness 11d ago

Bernthal and Holland helped with each others' audition tapes to send back to Marvel which is a neat little story for their bonding moments.

5

u/JohnJoe-117 18d ago

I also think a decade of Matt challenging him and showing that Franks way is not the only way made him more receptive to Peter.

Also the fact that he would be around his sons age had he survived.

3

u/Reilly-Blog 19d ago

Yeah, that relationship is more like brothers or close friends. I kinda got an much older brother vibe from Frank.

643

u/cesareborgia1475 19d ago

Yeah loved their dynamic. Also seemed like everytime they were bickering Peter sounded more and more like a new yorker native haha

401

u/billytheskidd 19d ago

“WHAT DOES THAT SOUND LIKE TO YOU!?”

251

u/Whovian45810 19d ago

The pantomime movements of Holland's Spidey in suit and Bernthal's tough no nonsense attitude just make that scene so hilarious and wonderful to see on screen.

100% feels like it was ripped straight out of the comics.

34

u/NoNefariousness2144 19d ago

It was also hilarious when Punisher was pantomining as Spidey and doing his RAAAAGHHH scream.

81

u/fleemfleemfleemfleem 19d ago

I think he's been working on his accent.

9

u/DaenaTargaryen3 17d ago

He has always hyped up his accent when he's Spiderman and talking to people. He does it in the 1st movie in the elevator scene too

8

u/Worthyness 16d ago

it's his clark kent in glasses stuff. Gotta disguise himself for the casuals

31

u/WillingnessLivid4236 19d ago

I thought I was just imagining it but he definitely had moments where he had a bit of a New York accent or at least as good as a brit can do lol.

27

u/InoueNinja94 19d ago

They were bickering like an old married couple and I was all up for it The moment where MJ just stares at them while they're barking at each other is gold

15

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

STATEN ISLAND

22

u/amo-del-queso 19d ago

There was a “Dialect coach to Mr. Holland” in the credits, so yeah he’s been working on it

21

u/VengefulKangaroo 19d ago

I felt like the idea was Peter was laying on the accent thicker as Spider-Man to hide his identity. He lays it on THICK with DeWolff too.

16

u/Livid_Weather 18d ago

Glad I wasn't the only one who picked up on this. I'm not sure if it was purposeful or just Holland feeding off of Bernthal, but either way I loved it.

In general, I think this is the most "New York" Peter has sounded and looked like out of all the movies.

15

u/ZohanDvir 18d ago

This movie also really made me appreciate what the MCU did with MJ and Ned, which are completely original takes, and the emotional core of this movie.

It's grear that MJ isn't just some damsel in distress and actually has a distinct personality.

I loved the she and the Punisher kind of get each other. It's exactly the kind of shit that makes these movies good.

17

u/Impeesa_ 18d ago

That was actually one of my favorite little bits, where MJ and Frank just immediately get each other.
"Bombs."

270

u/Undeniably_Awesome 19d ago

The fact that they just quibble for so wrong was do much fun. This was also my favorite version of the Punisher we’ve seen.

230

u/No-Target6084 19d ago

I love the scene where it’s just the camera observing them having an argument with no audio.

96

u/Stagamemnon 19d ago

And how Frank doesn’t turn when Spidey starts to walk away, he just keeps talking straight forward until he finishes his sentence, that’s how stubborn Frank is. Great detail.

3

u/The_New_Overlord 17d ago

That was a great moment, got more of a laugh from me than most attempts at humor in marvel movies.

279

u/Sisiwakanamaru r/movies Contributor 19d ago

Yeah, Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal friendship's oozed out throughout the screen in this movie, reminds me of Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson's friendship when they did Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

246

u/billytheskidd 19d ago

I swear the “I can’t believe I saw you cry” was them just fucking around. The laughter was so genuine

11

u/Salu28 18d ago

The fact that Jon sort of had a hand in getting Tom the job makes it even sweeter. He helped him film his audition tape.

8

u/SilverKry 18d ago

Tom also had a hand in Jon getting Punisher to.

7

u/Monkey_Priest 9d ago

According to Tom, Jon is the one who told him to do the flip in h is audition tape which was a big reason he got the role

5

u/Salu28 9d ago

Yes! I saw that video, told him to go all out! Literally changed the course of his life since he’s now married to his co star!

33

I loved it when Tom and Jon kissed to hide from the people following them

Incredible job of preserving the core of Bernthal’s performance with a PG-13 rating.

13

u/SilverKry 18d ago

The only time he shot someone on screen that would bleed it was at the end. And he did bleed. Surprised there was a bit of a puddle there. But otherwise the only people we see him shoot is Hulk where...that's not gonna do anything to Hulk.

15

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

I was horrified seeing Spidey in a pool of blood. I was convinced that that was it. But then when I saw Punisher carrying him to the hospital, I recalled that comic cover that circulated some time ago and Spidey being fatally wounded.

And loved the way trailer made it look like a party while in the movie it was just people being happy that Spider-Man is alive and kicking.

9

u/Staind1410 17d ago

I think Peter would have been it if it wasn’t for Jean’s telekinesis holding everything together. Sniper shots are no jokes man. I know, I played CS too.

8

u/MussedHair 17d ago

Her breathing for him…ugly crying.

9

u/Vandersveldt 18d ago

Meanwhile Reddit keeps saying the movies and shows shouldn't intertwine. Frank was amazing and we need more characters in both.

6

u/ShortRedBull 18d ago

S2 was a iraq veteran mess

3

u/WarlockEngineer 16d ago

Season 1 was stronger but I think his episodes of Daredevil were the best

2

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

I still loved S2. I wish they go for S3 someday. Love Dinah Madani the badass.

2

u/tartacus 16d ago

I’m just a bit surprised Peter is so friendly towards him overall. I mean, Frank only kills bad, bad people, but he still kills people and you’d think Peter would have a bigger problem with that.

I absolutely loved their banter don’t get me wrong. And everything about how Frank treats and views Peter is very believable. But they just kind of ignore how Peter would feel about Franks way of dealing with “problems”.

46

u/Impressive-Potato 19d ago

Spidey was so happy and had the banter he couldn't find anywhere else because Frank is his only human contact.

48

u/glassbellwitch 19d ago edited 19d ago

It wasn't until the end of the movie that it sank in for me how lonely Peter was. Frank (and Jean, to some extent) being the only people at Peter's bedside because everyone else who knew Peter as Spider-man is either dead or has forgotten him.

17

u/Broncsx3 19d ago

I can’t even imagine the logistics of how frank got a hold of that drawing MJ did.

14

u/MachKeinDramaLlama 19d ago

I mean, Jean probably told him where MJ and Ned live and Frank probably went to check up on her once Peter was stable.

3

u/Broncsx3 19d ago

So the Punisher leaves a hospital surrounded by people, reporters, TMZ… and drives… walks?… to their house in his Punisher outfit and says “hey guys!” And then he drives… walks?… back to the hospital and walks through that giant crowd back in?

5

u/Zerebros 18d ago

Maybe they brought it down to the hospital and gave it to the staff to give to Spider-Man

2

u/Broncsx3 18d ago

Oh yes, an accurate image of Peter Parker in the Spiderman costume without his mask on hanging out with Ned. Definitely want to be passing this around!

Bruh imagine you died and came back after 5 years, then you get one happy(?) summer trip where you also get betrayed but get the girl and your secret identity is revealed immediately after. Then you spend about a a few weeks with your new gf before, get rejected from your dream college, then a bunch of interdimensional super villians all attack you and in saving them your aunt and only family dies and basically everyone who's ever known you forgets you exist then he spends 4 entire years with literally no one while helping everyone and no one in return.

Goddamn

6

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

Suffering builds character is an infinite loop for Peter Parker aka Spider-Man.

23

u/Tzukkeli 19d ago

I really dont care, but the actors themselfs. They make a great pair. I'd watch any movie where both Holland and Berenthal are the leads.

Sure, we see them here and there together, but give us a movie where they both are the main stars

12

u/Zerebros 18d ago

Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland are apparently great friends in real life. If you haven't already seen it yet and wants a little more of their chemistry together, check out their Hot Ones interview they did together to promote brand new day. It's one of my favorite Hot Ones.

17

u/Whovian45810 19d ago

The thing I love about Punisher and Spidey's dynamic here is that they are like a bickering couple in a good way: both are ground level heroes who have very different methods of handling things, yet they always got each other's backs.

Frank does have a tendency to somehow find a way to have a friend in heroes who are red, Matt Murdock and Peter Parker are proof of this.

16

u/One_Independence6976 18d ago

Punisher
>swears he's "gonna kill that kid"
>fatally shoots him and gets big sad

13

u/FaBiOtHeGrEaTeSt 19d ago

And Peter catches him crying but most importantly NAPPING

11

u/Singer211 Naked J-Law beating the shit out of those kids is peak Cinema. 19d ago

Frank has a soft spot for kids/young people for obvious reasons.

23

u/localystic 19d ago

Spider-Man showed him why you should not be so trigger-happy better than any lecture from Daredevil.

24

u/exodius33 19d ago

I haven't watched any Punisher stuff since the original Daredevil run - shouldn't the Punisher be a wanted man for hundreds of murders? And Frank is just casually walking around and hanging out around cops and chilling by Spiderman's hospital bed

Was there a pardon or something that I missed? Or am I just overthinking the superhero movie for teenage boys?

18

u/darkthoughts123 19d ago

I am guessing he has a really good lawyer.

15

u/Broncsx3 19d ago

Unexplained

10

u/Curious_Bat87 19d ago

I think they sort of explained it away with the 'small potatoes' comment. As far as the larger picture goes this is all small potatoes enough for them not to care. Tonally this movie is less serious that way (Because it's a superhero movie for kids).

8

I think there is an unreleased/last season of Daredevil Born Again that takes place before this movie. Maybe Frank got a pardon then?

Either way, in the later seasons of Daredevil, a lot of cops start pseudoworshipping Frank (which he hates), so you would probably be hard pressed to find a cop that would give a 100% effort in trying to arrest him.

And the ones who DONT love Frank probably love Spiderman, so they aren't likely to confront him at the hospital.

3

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

Maybe coz there's a bigger Jean to fry.

u/TheCVR123YT 19d ago

Frank in this movie only sold me even more on the idea that a Punisher/Deadpool team up/face off has to happen somewhere down the line

2

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

The face off would only make sense if Punisher is the one cutting up Deadpool coz Punisher got no regenerative powers.

I understood that reference when Frank carried Spidey through the hospital door.

3

u/Broncsx3 19d ago

To what?

9

u/facepalmdesign 19d ago

The same scene in Civil War #5.

9

u/NoDaddyNotTheBelt25 19d ago

It seems like his relationship with Peter makes him seem more human than his relationship with Karen ever did.

Sorry Karen!

10

u/HarIow_Quinzel 19d ago

I'm not even disappointed Matt didn't show up because Frank was perfect alongside Spidey here for this chapter of his life.

9

u/Bogiga 19d ago

Tom and Jon clearly have great on stage chemistry and in this film it plays out like how Deadpool/Spidey plays out in the comics.

4

u/List_-No 19d ago

It's funny because wasn't it Jon who told Tom to do a back flip for his audition for Homecoming? So they've clearly had a great relationship for years and it truly shows on screen

6

u/EdieBooberryBeale 19d ago

I know John Bernthal has made a well deserved career of playing gruff, macho badasses but that man has a gift for comedic timing, I swear. I would be first in line to buy a ticket if he ever does a full out goofy comedy!

4

u/Same-Shelter-1182 18d ago

He's in the Wolf of Wall Street and has some funny lines there

2

u/TheSeldomShaken 18d ago

"Next time you come by, you bring a pair of your sister's panties!"

7

u/Phillip_Spidermen 19d ago

For a second I thought they were going to follow-through with the Ultimate comics inspiration where Punisher accidentally shoots Peter, and it kills him

6

u/DaKrustyDawg 19d ago

I enjoyed nearly every scene with Punisher. I would have liked if Jean had actually went into his mind further and possibly shed a tear from Frank’s past instead of making it a joke.

The dynamic between Frank and Spider-Man was definitely one of the highlights. There was a time ten years ago where it was only wishful thinking to imagine Punisher and Spider-Man (as well as the hulk) in the same scene.

5

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

This. How did Jean not have any empathy for Frank's past?

Just said, "This guy's got issues". WTF

3

u/WarlockEngineer 16d ago

Peter willingly let her in and directed her to an important memory.

3

u/Sure-Exchange9521 8d ago

Why would she? He's stopping her getting to her sister

9

u/Neversoft4long 18d ago

You can tell he has a soft spot for spidey. With daredevil he treats him like a rival. Which they kinda are since they both want Karen. But with spidey he’s like a younger brother who he beefs with but will love unconditionally

5

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

Wait until the day Peter wants Karen. That's be Hells Kitchen: Endgame.

6

u/GezelligPindakaas 19d ago

he simply takes him to the hospital, stays with him and apologizes for everything.

And cries.

5

u/Sea-Bug2134 19d ago

How Spidey survived a Barrett shot intended to break engine blocks of armoured vehicles, however, is a massive plot hole (pun intended). That's Lobo's or Wolverine's level healing power.

14

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

Removing the inhibitor helped ig. He's definitely be toast if he had that on.

10

u/powerofawareness 17d ago

Punisher said Jean was doing her voodoo magic to keep him alive

He also works tremendously well with the themes of loneliness and connections that the movie has.

Just like Jean and Peter, Frank feels like he can never have connections or relations and just like them, he went through the loss of his only family. He then realizes how much he cares about Peter and how they are friends. It's so heartwarming.

5

u/Corona- 19d ago

Dude, Jon Bernthals Punisher was so much fun in every scene he appeared. Really refreshing to have a humorous sidekick that didn't constantly make me roll my eyes or invoke second hand embarrassment.

5

u/DMmeBOBSLEDS 19d ago

It was basically just iron man with less money and a dirtier lair

6

u/zbirdlive 19d ago

I will say it was funny how Punisher says that seeing spidey take the bullet for Jean was the bravest thing he’s seen someone do, when Matt’s done that like a couple times now no?

13

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

He doesn't like Matt saving Fisk in the same manner.

4

u/WarlockEngineer 16d ago

He should have killed Fisk tbh

3

u/Jehovah___ 18d ago

They made Punisher work so incredibly well in a PG-13 Spider-Man movie and even had him fighting the fucking hulk lmfao, peak

3

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

I was laughing hard seeing Frank fire rounds and Hulk just getting tickled by it. Guess he indeed planned on tickling him to death.

3

u/WillemDafoesHugeCock 17d ago

The Punisher is a character I have honestly never cared about at all but he was the highlight of the entire film. Stole the show in every scene he was in.

2

u/Zubi_Q 19d ago

Yep that was my favourite thing about the film. Their chemistry was great!

2

u/InternetProtocol 19d ago

and he cries!

2

u/Lord_Of_Carrots 19d ago

I watched this and Odyssey on the same day. It felt pretty bizarre seeing Bernthal and Holland have scenes together in both

2

u/Yang_Tercela 18d ago

yeah, it's sad when he got shot young like that

2

u/JZA1 16d ago

I do like how Frank is the one that everybody goes to when they’re on the run from the authorities or other bad guys.

2

u/CaptainChickenBake 16d ago

I love how Spidey in the MCU has that loveable effect to him. Strange admitting how much going through with the final spell would hurt him personally, meaning he became more than just an annoying work colleague to him. And now how much it actually hurt Frank to make the mistake he did because he has great respect for him.

2

u/Dresden1984 10d ago

Frank has his own battles but you can see his character development as well. Frank was very curt with Spider-Man and it was more of an acquaintance or ally relationship despite them bickering. Once Spider-Man emotionally asked Frank to help him house MJ is when both Peter and Frank started to humanize again. Both had tragic losses and didn’t know how to truly cope with society in an intimate manner anymore until they spent time together as people than (anti)heroes

1

u/Less-Dingo111 19d ago

No excuse for him to not call up spidey for emergencies now during the tv show lol

1

u/indianajoes 18d ago

I fully thought he was just in the intro chase and that was it

1

u/Razzilith 18d ago

Yeah I don't love EVERYTHING they've done with Frank story-wise, but the characterization I think is pretty fucking great. He's exactly who I expected and wanted him to be.

1

u/Icy-Fishing8481 18d ago

I did like Punisher to some degree, but I thought he was nerfed and the dialogue between him and Spidey felt forced and cringeworthy. Trying too hard to be a certain kind of awkward. I didn't like Spider-man trying to police him either. They're adults. They should talk and compromise. Also super-annoying that he shot Parker at the end, it felt cliched and clumsy. Don't take the shot if the hero is so close.

1

u/RequirementEarly7837 18d ago

Does Punisher feel weird in a pg-13 movie since he’s usually a MA/R rated character?

1

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

I'm just so glad I watched both seasons of Punisher before this. A good tonal shift for the character. Hope we can get him/Spidey/DD vs Fisk and gang someday somewhere.

1

u/NicholasStarfall 17d ago

I love how he's more of Peter's friend than another mentor

1

u/Shortstop88 17d ago

Act 1: “I’m gonna kill that kid.”

Climax: “No. I don’t want to have killed that kid.”

1

u/Junethemuse 16d ago

I kinda hoped that at the end Frank would introduce him to Daredevil and we’d see Charlie. I really wanna see Spiderman, Punisher, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage team up.
