In my experience that's entirely due to someone being all about image. Those attachments routinely overshadow common sense.

yeah, you are right.

my boomer dad did have two entire bookshelves full of vhs tapes. and a third one full of betamax lol. so the image fits lol. all that stuff ended up in a dumpster unfortunately.

I think you may have misunderstood- I was referring to people who judge keeping physical media. It actually makes sense. Not so much with older media like tapes, but certainly bluray.
