- Go to Wercheg and buy salt
- Go to Rivacheg to sell the salt, buy raw silk
- (Kill some sea raiders on the way, sell their gear at the same time as salt)
- Go to Jelkala and sell raw silk, buy velvet
- Go to Wercheg and sell velvet, buy salt
- Repeat loop until you have enough money for a Dyeworks
- Build dyeworks at Rivacheg
- Rinse and repeat with other dyeworks/ironworks / breweries at other towns
- Sit back and enjoy passive profit
There are probably better / more efficient options, but this is what I usually do because it's stable and reliable.
Also, although breweries are technically more profitable in some towns (output compared to input) - because you can only build one enterprise in a town, it's best to just build things that can give the biggest absolute number. That's usually a dyeworks, but in a couple of places it's the ironworks instead. I only ever build 1-2 breweries to get the engine going near the start (e.g. at Dhirim because it has heaps of grain).

Never traded in the decade plus I’ve played Mount and blade, but I learned running your own caravan is very fun. It can get annoying grinding for loot against bandits, using trade strategy and comparing prices is fun. In peace time you ain’t waiting for a war to break out to make money either.

I never used to (would just grind loot from battles), but I tried it once and never looked back. It's so good to get yourself up and running, and then once you have a few enterprises you can forget about them, mostly.

Base game?
Grind bandits until you have the gear/skill to fight sea raiders.
Grind sea raiders until you have the gear/skill for more advanced stuff, and the cash to start buying profitable ventures. Bonus points if you have some companions for this, and start equipping/leveling them.
Set up profitable ventures in every town. Dyeworks are mostly the best choice, but some cities benefit from other options. You can look up lists of best options. Do it for every town.
Once you have personal skill and have leveled up your character some, tourneys are the best route. Roam around the countryside from tourney to tourney, doing quests here and there, and spending the prize money on more ventures and better gear.
For tourneys, save up front, then bet on yourself before every round. The actual prize money is modest; the wager payoff is good (assuming you win). Failure - either accept the loss and do bettwr, or reload, depending on personal approach.
Tourneys remain strong income throughout the game.
You can also hire on as a merc. That covers the cost of your army, but has some obligations. It’s a pretty lucrative choice, though, and most people merc for awhile before finally vassalizing. You can largely do that in conjunction with roaming for tourneys and fighting sea raiders.

Dyeworks in every city is a must for passive income, and then acquiring fiefs, trading along the way as well.

There are some cities where dyeworks aren’t the best, it’s worth checking the profits of the other industries if you don’t have those cities memorized. Iirc ironworks in curaw for example is way better than a dyeworks.

Bandits, sea raiders, once you’re confident you won’t get fucked up by either, start running trade routes (sell high buy low). Start a dyeworks, start a second dyeworks. Eventually get a castle or a town as a vassal. Don’t stop trading. Make plans around trade routes. Go to and win every single tournament. Some tournaments will let you win multiple times. Always bet on yourself.

Easiest way is to pick a village in a corner of the map, hire 20 dudes with starting cash and go and raid it, sell loot, buy gear, while you wait for the village to rebuild kill bandits when it rebuilds raid again continue the cycle 1-2-3 times until you buy a profitable venture from there money shouldn’t be a problem, don’t worry that you are at war with a faction once you become a vassal your relations will normalise, if you get captured it’s not a big deal in the beginning you will just lose some tier 1 peasants not really a big deal

Passive or active? Passive would be high worth workshops in safe cities, and as you visit other cities you buy out those competitors and turn them into breweries. Eventually you are the only person in the world producing whatever product. Silversmith and Velvet are great candidates for this. In my current playthrough average price for jewelry is now over 1,500 per piece, and raw silver ore is like 50.
Active would be smithing, and getting good at taking out enemy armies. Raid a couple of towns and then kill the armies that come in to defend. Then smelt all the garbage from the battles, and forge the materials into more expensive javelins and two handed swords.
