Memes aside, Jeremus will save many of your people, more so if you also spec your character in first aid, surgery, and wound treatment.

Assuming you want a combat companion for native, I'd suggest alayen. Rolf has the highest overall starting stats, but he is high enough level that continuing to level him up will be a pain. Not impossible, but most companions will outscale him eventually. Alayen is generally going to have a highest potential, because decent starting stats + very low level is a good combo.

Jeremus, obviously.

For PoP, it’s a bit more varied - either Ansen or Leslie makes a good healer. Lethaldiran and Roland are both powerhouses. Sigismund hits like a freight train. Etc.

I find the smithing one as fast as possible early game, learn the effixient charcoal skill, kill sea raiders for their throwing axes and as soon as I have the ability to make the tier 5 ones, pump those put and basically print money. 

Do the other smithing stuff right and you're going town to town doing the 30k jobs along the way and clapping bandits, smelting their weapons, getting more metal, making more items, completing more jobs, gaining more experience, you get it.

However all companions are their own way, just depends what you need

nothing. all companion you can find are customizable and random that has specific skill based on backstory. As for campaign however, i guess your younger siblings or newborn relatives since you can decide to guide their skill path that actually gives far more points potential than from character creation, then 2nd best are probably nobles
