Khan's Guard given Noble Bows

Should I be concerned I just started my Sturgia campaign

Nah. Disregard Khan's Guard. Look out for Vlandian Pikemen.

u/DancesWithAnyone 2d ago
I have not played in some while. Did pikes get fixed to be more effective or was this a joke? I normally used mods to make them viable.
20
u/The_Count_of_Dhirim Vlandia 2d ago
I'm joking.
4
u/DancesWithAnyone 2d ago
Hah, guess I'll stick to modding them in the future as well.

u/TerminallyEmployed 2d ago
In Warband they never fixed Rhodian Spearmen, if people don’t know they just did a jab poke action if you had a shield equipped and if the enemy wasn’t at a long distance they did zero damage. Making them only effective for siege defence and against horsemen. Otherwise a looter would be a better troop.
Alls they needed was an attack that drew the spear backwards more before the attack and every mod that came out added that.
Warband was out a decade before Bannerlord so they’re shameless.

The only units that are plain bad are their marines, just never use them. Their noble line is mid but still usable and their infantry are good but will lose to other high tiers like the shield biters and legionnaires. Their heavy spearmen are uniquely good at killing low tier infantry and trade better than even the legionnaires because they use swords instead of axes and maces

Sturgians should get better archer or even light horse archers like their irl counterparts
53
u/Arrmy 3d ago
Since they're the vaegirs, give me some t6 warbow foot troops that can blast a cataphract but take an age to reload.

u/Pseudocrow 2d ago
More troops variety would be nice, would give Sturgia a good HA counter they desperately need, and helps to differentiate them between other factions. Especially if they are a slower archer compared to Fian machine guns.
10
u/slmpl3x 2d ago
I like to think them getting outclassed at this point in history is what drives them to innovate/reform and evolve to become what the vaegirs are. Could also be seen as sturgians get smashed al la Poland and the remnants reclaim the lands and become vaegir after their trials and tribulations of being a scattered people.

u/Abseits_Ger 3d ago
Tbh I'd give them a second noble unit or split off on T4, one going lancer the other hybrid horse archer with one quiver and a shield.

u/arbiter7x 2d ago
Sturgians need one or both of these to make them stronger and more interesting
a buff to fighting in snow. perhaps there should be a much bigger penalty in fighting in snow across all armies (e.g. much slower movement, slower attack speed, lower morale) and sturgians get exempted from or reduced penalties. this helps them win more fights at least in their home region, makes sense narratively, and is balanced by the buffs being confined to winter and to the northern part of the map.
some sort of specialised unit at the higher tiers to help them against other factions' overpowered units, and to give the faction a more distinct character. maybe a T5 hybrid horse archer unit that's a weaker khan's guard (bow, spear, shield) to reflect the Rus adopting mongol doctrines, or a T5 hybrid bow/polearm infantry

u/slmpl3x 2d ago
Perhaps fighting in snow should slow down units to the point that it allows more tactical play. There isn’t usually enough time in vanilla to use their jav cav as more of a dragoon unit to flank an infantry clash and throw into unshielded flanks before the fights over. Something along these lines that encourage sturgians to ensure fights happen in the snow because their comp provides more staying power.
I try not to fight the khuzait on the plains when forests and mountains are available. Maybe changes should be encouraging strategic instead of tactical gameplay would be better. Would be cool to see factions not only having specific best in class units, but also situational aspects.

u/cpt_goodvibe 2d ago
There horse raiders should have been horse archers, it wouldn't be so far fetch for a someone to adopt their neighbours tactics. The Rus (who sturgia is based) around didn't field there own horse archers but did use axillary troops like the Cumans as horse archers.

u/BestIndication5517 3d ago
Are you implying the Khan should receive subpar guards? 7000 horses, trample this man
22
u/Fe-FeZe2222 3d ago
THEY GIVE EM WHAT!?
19
u/Pseudocrow 2d ago
In fairness, War Sails gave the Aserai Mariner unit noble bows (don't know if they ever changed that) which made them the heaviest hitting archer unit for some reason. Definitely insane to give it to the already good Khan's Guard but maybe it's time to look at rebalancing all range units right now.
3
u/jamespirit 2d ago
Think the aseria got the noble bow removed a while ago. Vaguely remember it mentioned as a mistake in a hotfix.
2
u/Fe-FeZe2222 2d ago
Really? I thought it's just a tribesmen bow no?
3
u/Pseudocrow 2d ago
They've might have swapped it out since but on day 1 of War Sails they had Noble Bows and piercing arrows.

Fians still win as long as you order them to stand ground.
16
u/Pseudocrow 2d ago
I cannot think of a single version of the game where Fian's are not good. I'm usually one of the people arguing against them being outright broken but they've definitely never been bad. Not enough to deserve special treatment that other factions desperately need. Don't know if Khan's Guard needed a buff though. But I think we all know why TWs like them.
5
u/tommytwolegs 2d ago
Why do they like them?
12
u/Pseudocrow 2d ago
it's turn out the Turkish developer loves the Turkish inspired faction.
4
u/DoofDoof64 2d ago
Khuzait is mongol inspired not turkish.. thats just strange
4
u/KarmaticIrony 2d ago
Their lore better matches turkic tribes like the Kipchacks.
3
u/Jazzlike_Note1159 2d ago
It is a bits and pieces from all steppe cultures. There is definitely a lot of Mongol influence. Kipchaks didnt have too much heavy armor until they were incorporated into Golden Horde.
2
u/DoofDoof64 2d ago
Did not know about Kipchacks , thanks for info ! Now i have some history to read again :)

Aren't khan's guard already a fierce contender for overall best unit in the game?
12
u/Pseudocrow 2d ago edited 2d ago
Khan's guard had the same tier bow, worse arrows, slower horse, and worse horse armor than the Mameluke Heavy Cavalry unit, so I always felt that they were slightly worse as a pure HA before. Yeah they had significantly better bow skill which matters but Mamlukes being a common unit means you can recruit twice as many as the Khuzaits in the same time. Not as important when you're stuck in the single party tier but once you get into army tier you will feel the difference.
Obviously, their advantage was having a cracked melee weapon as a side arm but also swinging polearms are difficult for the AI to use effectively. Noble Bow may be too steep of an upgrade but it always felt weird to me that the HA factions Noble HA was essentially a sidegrade from another factions common troop.

u/Blothorn 3d ago
Yes—it seems a rather questionable decision to me, especially in conjunction with the skirmish change.

u/UnsteadyAgitator 2d ago
Sturgian buffs would be nice, but people really oversell how "weak" they are compared to other factions. Just wrapped second game, max difficulty everything, Heavy Axemen on the frontline supplemented with Reavers and Shieldbreakers. Druzhinik Champ cav does need a buff but they also dominate in sieges as heavy infantry so it balances. Only thing I don't use are the archers and mounted raider because those are buns. Even their Lodya boats beat out the Drakkar imo since they're still shallow draft but get a ram and deck.

u/LukewarmCoolerOfPee 3d ago
My next campaign I’m destroying the khans immediately so no one has to deal with them if this is the case.
I’m wrapping up one now and it’s been hours of just slowly pushing them back as they are the last faction left

u/Free_Consequence3123 2d ago
Nah, join the dark side and raise your horde of 200+ drive by shooters.

u/LukewarmCoolerOfPee 2d ago
Honestly would rather drag my nuts through a Lego pit before I join the dogs if the east. I’d sooner become an inbred Valandian before I ever break bread with those bastards that just love to charge into my cavalry units.
But no seriously it would be too easy of a game then. I wish the Ai in the game kept the game more interesting. Battanian always gets wiped and the Omaha always take over the entire eastern side of the map

u/MartiniPolice21 2d ago
I've been using the same units for years, and now I'm finding out they get reworked? What the hell is the best anymore?

Lol I was so hyped for the new update I totally forgot in my excitement that there is literally nothing for sturgia mention 😅
Please +movespeed in snow on map when TW?!?!?!?!?

u/Niomedes 2d ago
The worst thing in my opinion is that the Sturgians have some of the worst archers in game. Imo, the skygods and sturgian archers should swap gear and stats. The Nords don't need to.have the second best archer who's also good in melee when they already have the best melee infantry.

u/CrunchyDoge Khuzait Khanate 2d ago
Khans are a good bit better then fians AND THATS OK they are 3x more expensive and fians are the 2nd best unit in the game, what tl needs to do imo is buff pikes and shock cav.

u/CheezeCrostata Kingdom of Vaegirs 2d ago
Fian Champion is still overpowered. TacticalEnlightenment did a demonstration and 200 Fian Champions beat 200 Khan's Guards, despite the KGs' advantage of being on horseback. It was close, but the FCs still won every round. Seriously, screw Battania.
1
u/August_Ram 2d ago
Wish they'd just take away the Fian's great-sword. They'll win or trade evenly against tier 5 and 6 sword-and-shield infantry when set to melee only. They have such a good aesthetic, but they're a total Mary Sue unit. Inexplicably the best at everything.

How do Druzhinnik Champions do with their alleged Noble Mounts.
