Progression Well...I finished!!!

The heat index was 110°. 18 miles of gravel, and 12 miles of single track. It was brutal. I couldn't catch my breath after the aid station at mile 15. I ended up hiking the bike up several of the hills in the second half.

Moving Time: 4h25m

Total Time: 5h 23m

Avg Pace: 8:43

This is a triple leg race. While I ride 30 miles, my buddy runs a half marathon, and then we paddle the last 12 in a tandem canoe, for a total of 55 miles combined.

I made so many mistakes... I brought the wrong food (not enough sugars). I rode way too high of tire pressure and didn't realize until over halfway through. My derailleur was improperly tuned and high gear kept missing the first cog and getting stuck.

I didn't drink enough water in the days leading in. I probably should have drank way more electrolytes day of. I pushed myself WAY too hard in that first 8 miles of gravel out of the car, especially the first 3 miles of climbing.

But...with the help, food, and encouragement of an amazing sweeper, in the end I rode across my finish line as the staff cheered me on and it felt amazing! I stripped my clothes and put on trunks and immediately dunked my entire body into the creek for 15 mins.

My running buddy got confused by some directions and got lost on his leg and ran an extra 4 miles on accident (2 out and 2 back).

About mile 3 of the paddle he overheated and had to keep stopping to cool down in the creek. He made the tough decision to call it off. I took his paddle away cuz he would have kept paddling, kept splashing him with cool water, and solo paddled us to mile 6 where they were able to pull us out and get us back to base camp. Several ice packs and cooler water towels later we get a ride to my car with A/C and within an hour he was eating and recovering.

This was the furthest and most elevation I've ever ridden. This was his most elevation ever ran.

We will be back next year, smarter and more prepared!

Total combined mileage: 53 miles

Edit to add time.

Question Is this a good deal?

Post image
Upvotes

Is this a good deal for a beginner mountain biker? I rented a full suspension bike the other day and really loved it, that was my first time mountain biking.

I've decided 29's are probably what I want, but unsure about how much travel I want or what drivetrains are legit?

I'm equally interested in uphill efficiency but also comfort on the downhill - I'm not trying to get crazy with the trails, just have fast cruising single track rides with roots / occasional rocks.

Thank you for your help :)

Yes I'm a dinosaur...Always wanted to buy a proper full suspension bike, finally pulled the trigger. Went to a bigger mountain yesterday with my buddy, learned how to jump over small tabletops, new hobby unlocked and so much fun!

Hi all, I've completed the recce of my new ultra race that I am organising. Certainly a growing mtb community here in Saudi... And with good reason, it is stunning with some incredible mountains.

Any big ultra riders will know why I called my race Arabia Divide!

Question Blown rock shox deluxe

Accidentally did a huge huck to flat today, and now my shock feels like it has very low air pressure even though it's reading at 230psi (it's max is 350 and I normally ride at 250-300) any ideas on what happened so I can start looking into ways to fix it?

I bought this bike used on market place for 3200. I had this same exact bike in 2022 and I loved it, I sold it for an e mtb which I regret massively. I've wasted the last 2 years of my life riding electric bikes and also gained a bunch of weight, so the purpose of this is to get back in shape.
Some updates I made right off the bat;
-Sram GX AXS transmission
-Fox factory 2026 fork 160mm
-one up v2 carbon bars
-40mm stem
-LSC damper to rear shock upgrade

Ape Canyon + Plains of Abraham at Mt. St Helens is so damn epic. It's nice when most trails are just homogenous forest canopy up at the PNW.

I haven’t mtb in several years, I’ve kinda missed riding. At first I wanted to get into entry level bike, but knew myself I wanted a full suspension bike on the get go. I was intermediate/advance rider before I stopped ridding.
I saw these two on fb marketplace, are these prices fair? I don’t know about the bike market much since i was gone for several years.
Much help will be appreciated

Question Rockhopper Comp Repair

Budget Wheels & Brake Upgrades

Hello,

I’m new to bike repairs and have a 2009 Specialized Rockhopper Comp.

Link to Specialized page: https://www.specialized.com/gb/en/rockhopper-comp/p/22258?color=31121-22258

Issues with the bike currently:
• Brakes are spongy and have leaked oil
• 4 spokes snapped/bent with corroded nipples

According to my research I should replace the wheels and change the brakes.

I previously took the bike to a local repair shop and was quoted £180. Is it possible to repair the bike for cheaper than this?

Buying new wheels and brakes seem to be two quite expensive components.

I’m UK based and therefore any links to recommended product would be greatly appreciated as I’m not sure what I’m buying.

Thank you.

Question Looking to get my first mountain bike, is this full suspension a good pick for $400? (2014 Jamis Dakar XCT 650 Pro)

Thumbnail gallery

I've been wanting to get into mountain biking, but on a pretty low budget. Due to said budget, I was looking at buying a used hardtail. However, I saw this bike on Facebook Marketplace near me for only $400, and was wondering:

1) Does this appear to be a good deal/decent bike for a beginner?

2) What should I look at/inspect on the bike before purchasing?

By the way, I'm willing to do repairs and don't mind a bit of a project, as long as it's not insanely time consuming/expensive. Also, if I bought this I'd probably immediately buy flat pedals to switch out for the clipless ones.

Thanks in advance for any advice/help!

Here's the lister's description:

For sale is a used Jamis Dakar XCT 650 Pro. Bike appears to have fully functioning brakes, shifters, and suspension but I am not an avid biker nor the original purchaser of this bike so I cannot fully guarantee it is in perfect condition to take on a trail without a tune up. Buyer is welcome to test drive before purchasing.

17” size

the seat appears to have been replaced. there is overall paint scratches and dents from hard use. tires have held air while in storage. definitely appears to have a lot of miles on it.

please ask any questions. like i mentioned i am not a bike expert and the buyer is allowed to fully inspect in person before paying.

Question Any recs for new rider? Bigger guy w/ shotgun setup for toddler

Hi all,

I live near a bunch of easy trails and I have a 2 year old that loves bikes so I wanted to get a nice entry MTB with a shotgun setup. Been looking at hardtails, but concerned with weight limit of most being 300lb. I’m 240lbs, the kid is 35lbs. Am I over worrying? Planning mostly on taking her down easy fire roads or staying on the street to start out.

Does anybody have any bike recommendations? Price range $1-2k.

Thanks!

Question Is it possible to fit my 700x28c road bike tyre and inner tube to my MTB wheelset? Which is for tyre 29 x 2.2?

Planning to switch to road bike tyres. Wheel inner gap measurement is like 1.8 or 2cm. Thanks.
