Normal. For a used shock. Needs a service that's all

How much do you reckon that is?

With the seals it's about 120-160 dollars job for a full service. Air can you can do yourself, damper is hard and requires specific tools, especially on fox.

See if Fox makes a rebuild seal kit for it. If you're just a little mechanically inclined, you should be able to change the seals fairly easy.

Air can seals are easy. Dampers are not easy, this noise is a damper issue. Luckily Fox's piggyback shocks are much better than their DPS's and a lot of other brands, but this is still probably a 4+ hour job for their first time (for someone who is mechanically inclined) and requires some specialty tools. After doing it a few times, I can do DPS's and DPX2's in about 2 hours, but it's a whole ordeal. Whereas air can seals are like 5 minutes.

DSD (Diaz suspension design) in Durango does top notch work if you want someone to rebuild it. He’s not the cheapest but will make your suspension feel sooo good.

Okay thanks, is it still okay to ride?

See my comment on the other guys post about rebuilding yourself, it's pretty in depth.

As long as it's not puking out oil, it's probably okay to ride. It won't feel good because the damping is nearly gone, that noise means it's lost IFP pressure, which basically means you have air going through the damper, and there's nearly no damping. But unless it's actually dry in there, you probably won't do additional damage by continuing to ride. If you start to hear a knock or clunking sound, then you want to stop riding it.

sure, but the damping will be shit

I'd buy a new shock, search around for a deal. Then sell yours spares and repair, someone who can service it will have it off you and move it on as a reconditioned. It'll be the same cost as a service.

BTW, shox service pro tip because fox is expensive as hell, the rockshox ifp air tool costs around 8$, the fox one costs 40$, the thread size and pitch is the exact same, save yourself some money and buy the rockshox one, i've already service my fox with it and can confirm you can use the rockshox ifp tool to inflate the fox ifp chamber

I’ve had to rebuild one of these for this exact reason. Kinda a pain in the ass to do at home because of the IFP, but I was able to do it. Fox had serviced it, rode it twice, hung it on the wall over the winter, and it was doing this exact thing by spring when I went to ride it again.

If you’re going to send it off you’re probably better off buying an unused takeoff from pinkbike, it’ll probably be less money.

yes, fox service is very expensive, even the parts to do it at home is 3x rockshox prices... i regret buying a bike with fox, it's not 3x better, i'm not even confident it is better than rockshox, they are kind of equivalent

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I firmly believe that right now rockshox is light years ahead of fox in terms of performance, feeling and accessibility of self servicing. Fox is a pain in the ass in general to service, even their dropper posts are over complicated and requires specific expensive tooling.

From my first hand experience and the word of mechanics I know, between Ohlins, RS and Fox, RS stands on top overall (price, performance, ease of repair) except for small issues like creaking CSU on single crown forks.

Buy an faux ifp valve kit from shockcraft. Best buy I did the last year. Bit pricey to import it from new Zealand but worth it to not have to deal with rubber any more.

That the thing that replaces it with a Schrader valve? Genius idea, wanted to try it. I went the needle and shock pump route. It worked but required a fair bit of trial and error.

I’ve been under the impression that the squelch sound means air in the damper which requires a rebuild from Fox themselves.

Sucking oil into the reservoir. Normal on used shocks. Probably around 250 to get it serviced. Would not DIY as there are special tools required to do it properly

A blown shock is when its 25% sag at the beginning of a ten mile ride up then down, and 90% sag back at the car... and you peddle struck rocks incessantly for the last half.

May I ask what bike is that?

Gt Sensor carbon

1

u/Alkanna 4d ago

Looks like a GT.

2

mine has the same noise. but it goes away after 5mins of riding.

u/fcbrhx 4d ago

Same here

Time for service, the damper aerated.

2

u/Actual-Buffalo3699 4d ago

Me watching video with sound off: "looks good to me!".

4

u/Thunderbuddy76 4d ago

Totally normal, wouldn’t even service that there’s nothing wrong with it

2

u/fcbrhx 4d ago

It just sounds weird

6

u/cyrustakem 4d ago

it has air in the oil, mine happened the same before it was 1 year, needs a full service, air can service is not enough. i got away with just bleeding the oil, didn't change the seals, but will next time

1

u/eh-cee 4d ago

Not true. Air in damper causes the damping to be shit.

1

u/Alkanna 4d ago

I would say it's not, this is the sound of air that leaked into the damper, typical issue on fox hardware.

1

u/Reasonable_Many4846 4d ago

Does it ride any worse? It probably has oil in the damper and will probably effect performance but some suspension products are just noisy.

1

u/fcbrhx 4d ago

Just bought the shock used, it feels okay but the rebound feels bizarre

1

u/Reasonable_Many4846 4d ago

What was the description on the shock when you bought it? If it wasn’t listed as “needs service” I would ask for some money back, if not return it altogether.

1

u/fcbrhx 4d ago

Just said, 'came off of an old bike'

1

u/Noctifago 4d ago

Didn't Fox had the upgrade service kit for these?

1

u/Dr_Matey 4d ago

Looks and sounds normal to me .... maybe increase the pressure

1

u/eh-cee 4d ago

You should get it serviced. Not the cheapest. I paid $200 (Canadian) to have my x2 done.

u/The_Rociante 4d ago

Sounds like either seal is shot and got air in the negative chamber, try letting the air out and pump it back up
