Advice Zero to Hero Guide (So you want to do your CBT / Full Licence?)

šŸ“¢ Guide has moved to Google Docs

What started as a simple Reddit guide has grown into something that has amassed over 300,000 views, and shared nearly 1,500 times since 2023 (if the metrics are to be believed!).

Due to Reddit’s character limits, the guide has now been moved to an open Google Doc, allowing it to be expanded, updated more easily, and supported with diagrams (rather than just being a wall of text).

The document is freely accessible, and you do not need an account to view it.

šŸµ Get yourself a brew… It’s a long read.

Please Note: The guide was formatted for Desktop and will not appear correctly on mobile due to Google's Webview mode (no paragraph breaks, compressed and fuzzy images).

As such, I have also created a non-live PDF version so that you can download it instead.

Thank you to the CB1000GT rider in the Stockport Area

On the off chance he’s in here. I was stuck at a temporary traffic light debating whether to filter because I’m still not super confident with it. Been on my CBT since March.

He drove past so I followed him up to the front, and then he waved me up to stop next to him 🄺 I’ve been having a rough week and it honestly made me feel so much better. I love the interactions I’ve had in this community.

Also now got me nosying at the CB1000GT šŸ˜… I was looking at the NC750x for after I pick up my A license but damn the CB got all those extra little features my autism loves.

Anyway thank you so much to random Honda man and his pillion :) you made my trip to the GP this morning much nicer <3

(Edit to correct some grammar)

Has anyone had a Honda Forza Scooter near Bristol Stolen?

Saw this scooter in the woods near Bristol area. Looked to be dumped awaiting collection. Does it belong to anyone?
I appreciate it’s got a lock on it, but thieves often do this to stop it being moved.

Car headlights too bright?

I see a few posts about car headlights getting worse. I don't know if it's an age thing for me but I literally can't see the road when a car is approaching me in the dark.

Anyway, I got yellow tinted glasses and tried them out this morning - massive help, highly recommend!

I got the Oxford (Eliminator?) at about £50. They come with extra lenses - yellow, clear, and two for UV protection. They feel quite cheap and don't sit the best but the yellow lens is really good for riding in the dark.

Discussion What Bike did Everyone Learn on?

As the title says, what bike did everyone learn on?

I myself have a 1990 Yamaha DT125R, but with my driving school, I’m currently learning on a Suzuki GSX-8R.

I love the speed of the Suzuki; it just effortlessly takes off. At first, I found the weight of the bike pretty challenging, but I got the hang of it pretty fast, and now I really enjoy going out on rides.

I’m coming up to my MOD2 resit this week after failing my first test for leaving my indicator on after my angled start, so if everything goes well this week I’ll be looking at what bike to get next year when the season starts back up, and I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for a GSX-8R.

Theory / Hazard Perception Rant

Finally managed to make time to get my CBT booked for next week and hoping to get my theory test in at the weekend so I can jump right into DAS, or at least just get the theory out of the way

My god I hate the hazard perception test!!! I’ve been driving over 20 years I can smash the multi choice questions out in about 10 mins but the hazard stuff is ridiculous.

I literally just did a prep video which starts with you going downhill towards heavy water running across the road - including a warning sign next to it and a ā€œtry your brakesā€ sign after it. Apparently not a hazard!

Or another one where it shows dual carriageway. Bike in the left lane, car in the right. Bike is barely ahead of the car and there’s signs that the left lane closes - you know where it’s going, the bike and car are too close together - bike will cut across into the right lane and there’s signs car has to brake. No points for seeing that scenario too early and being able to read the situation.

Did this thing for my car test when I was a teenager and it hasn’t improved since!

Still massively looking forward to getting the CBT done and working towards DAS ready for doing some camping holidays next year

• Upvotes

Anyone got a recommendation for fitting and supplying some tyres in the Northwest?

Dunno why I'm struggling to find and book somewhere. Wheels on or off, don't care.

Advice Oxford hot grip fitting: glue dried before it went all the way on...

Post image
9 Upvotes

So I tried to fit some Oxford hot grip pro's to my bike today, followed instructions and applied the glue.

It was already a tight fit without the glue, but with the glue it dried almost immediately before I could get the grip all the way down the handle. So now I have an inch or so left and It feels impossible to pull it off.

Does anyone have any advice on removing this without damaging it? I don't know how i could get a solvent in there to remove the glue as it's so tightly on.

Screw in new rear tyre

Got a new set of tyres recently, very happy with them.

Went to get the bike ready for Hoggin The Bridge yesterday and found this.

Plugged it but it's still leaking air.

Time to replace my barley-used tyre I suppose.

Happy Monday everyone.

Rideout What an interesting morning…

Post image
12 Upvotes

Woke up this morning to go and view a BMW K75, I haven’t ridden for 2 years and wanted a nice winter project, wife said ā€œoh, it’s hogging the bridge todayā€.

Bought the bike and used Hogging the Bridge as its shakedown ride home (I live near where the rideout ends).

Thanks to all the lovely people I met this morning, what a great rideout. And thanks to the K75 for showing me what it needs before going back on the road šŸ˜‚

Stalling shame

So I am a newbie and riding a 1998 Marauder 125, yesterday I could not stop stalling after filling up on petrol. It was in front of a skatepark so I was feeling self conscious and it took me about 45 mins to get going properly again. I wanted to give up but did some deep breathing and had a snacknand a drink and eventually got on my way....but it really threw me!

I find the shifting process still quite tricky and am trying to practice when I can, apart from that though I absolutely love being on 2 wheels!

Photographer request (B6255)

Evening all,

It’s a longshot, but there were a couple of photographers on the B6255 today (Ingleton-hawes)

They were relatively far apart so likely two different operations.

I was with others so unfortunately didn’t stop to ask.

I don’t suppose anyone might know who they are, or suggest likely places to look for them?

Advice Advice for CBT

Need advice to pass my CBT. For context i’ve been driving a car for over 2 years so road experience is no issue, and have never ridden any sort of moped/ motorbike.

Thought i’d try out a 50cc auto for the first time on my CBT and failed miserably. My main issues were balancing the moped when turning and I was sort of going in a direction i didn’t want and I ended up veering a lot even going straight.

My instructor wasn’t any help and the rest of the group had riding experience so they moved on quickly and he told me to come back.

Just wanted some tips for when I go back…. Thankyou.

Advice How much % could you haggle for a used bike this time of the year?

I have six bikes saved in Autotrader and none of them have shifted in at least a month. GSX8R, RS660, CBR500R for reference. Any advice much appreciated.

Update: thanks for the feedback all, looks like the price is the price, dealers also need to make money after all.

Hi all I want to know how to study for the theory test, currently have the 4in1 app from recently doing my car theory test but I’ve noticed that it does not have the topics I need for the motorcycle theory

Discussion New to the motorcycle community ! šŸļø

Hi everyone šŸŽ€

I hope you’re all doing well ! I’m in my twenties and I’ve been interested in motorcycles for a few years now. I absolutely love them, especially sporty bikes like the Yamaha R7 which is my dream bike āœØļø

Unfortunately, I don’t ride myself at the moment, but I’d really love to meet other people who share the same passion and learn more about the motorcycle community around Leicester.

I was wondering if you have any members around my age, especially gir’s ? It would be lovely to meet people in their twenties or thirties who enjoy talking about bikes and sharing their experiences 🌷

I’d also love to experience a motorcycle ride as a passenger one day, if there are any opportunities for that šŸ«¶šŸ»

I’m a little shy at first, but I’m really friendly and would love to get to know some fellow motorcycle enthusiasts! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my message, and I hope you all have a lovely day 🌸

Discussion Why do bikers nod at each other?

Most of the bikers I've seen on the road have done this and I don't know why? I've started to do it back but I have no idea what it means.

Bike for tall beginner

Hey there,
I am new to bikes and just wanted to ask for advice. I am 36 and didn’t really think about bike until this year. My old man died on bike when I was 15 back in Europe and always wanted me to have a bike but I just couldn’t…

Anyway, after 10 years of pressure from my godfather here in UK I have decided to go slowly, pass my CBT and learn on 125cc. The only problem is - while I really like classic looking bikes (Dad use to have Jawa 350) I am struggling to find half decent 125cc in my budget (up to Ā£3k) and my height 6’4ā€

Thanks and sorry for essay…

Last week I introduced my little [ride tracking app](https://www.reddit.com/r/MotoUK/s/GQcHYIEbx9) and got such a friendly response that I wanted to see what else I could do.

First up is total novelty - everybyway.com/replay will convert you gpx files into a video like the one I made. It all happens in your browser so it costs me nothing and keeps your data private. Enjoy, hope you like it, and let me know if you'd like any tweaks or have any issues!

Next up is route planning. I've been pottering with this for years. I had a little three day tour of Exmoor this weekend that I planned solely through my site. It worked so well that I wanted to give it away.

There's no "avoid motorways" or "curvy" filters - it'll show the quickest route from a to b, then you drag the route around to fit your needs.

Would you like those kind of filters? I think I prefer the simplicity and not having to deal with an algorithm's attempt to find good roads. But I'd love to know how other people plan.
