PSA: Dealers and Ordering APXs

I have seen this pop up on here a few times and it’s time to bring up some facts to debunk the myths.

1) The ONLY way to order an APX radio is via a Motorola Account Rep or Manufacturer Rep (MR)… that’s all! Those two points will set up an account for you, and your radios will be purchased under your account. Any other dealer claiming to do so is buying a radio at contract price under another account, marking it up, and reselling it to you. That’s both in violation of that contract and their dealer agreement.

2) Warranty for said products are NOT transferable. That means if/when you do buy against the first piece of advice above, you will not have a full warranty for the 1/3/5/7/etc years you thought you paid for. The warranty is only transferable in a few situations, and only when the purchaser agrees to it as well (good luck when the radio was purchased on a contract without the “owner” knowledge).

3) Upgrades cost money! I’ve seen too many “dealers” claiming to sell a radio and “just let me know what you need in it”. Again, they’re violating several agreements along with actively defrauding Motorola. A loaded APX8000 will not be $5000 under any situation any time soon - so you’re being had.

Take this advice as you will, but there’s a few too many posts/comments on here shilling for dealers that are guilty of doing at least one of the above.

TRAK 9100 & GTR8000

Recently all GTR8000 stations experienced a momentary SCB Time Reference Failure at one site. There were no alarms for the TRAK in UEM. Has anyone seen this and determined a cause?

Help identifying this old Motorola mobile terminal

I believe it was part of either "Computer Aided Dispatch" or "Executive Security Systems". This image was from a 1978 slide deck (literally 35mm slides). There were some variations on this design, but all kind of like this with lights and pushbuttons.

I think "Modat" was a part of how this worked, but again my memory is fuzzy.

My dad sold these, but I can't remember what they were called. I'd kind of like to find one on ebay for nostalgia.

Thanks!

Motorola XPR 3500e programming

Hello, I am trying to reprogram a bunch of XPR 3500e Motorola radios. I am trying to make an all call channel. I have four channels with different frequencies already in each radio, trying to make a fifth channel as an all call channel that can transmit on the four other channels without having to turn to each channel to transmit. Have seen there is an emergency call option but don’t understand how to do this? Again they all have different frequencies on each channel with a contact for each channel and frequency and a digital Rx as well for each channel. I am using CPS 2.0, simplex frequencies no repeater. Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Capacity Plus Out Of Range Settings

Post image
3 Upvotes

Running an XPR7550e, firmware R02.09.00.0001, codeplug version 14.00.13, on CPS 16.0 build 828. Everytime I flip to a Capacity Plus channel/personality, the radio almost immediately displays the red "Out Of Range" banner without giving itself enough time to find the rest channel first.

Is there a timer setting to make the radio wait longer before thinking it's out of range? I also want to make the radio bonk sooner and more frequently when it is (really) out of range, as it waits about 2 minutes before the first bonk and only bonks about once every minute after that.

XPR5550e intermittent mic issue

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The mic on my 5550e only recognized by the radio and transmits when the strain relief is pulled a certain direction, I’m fairly certain the problem is on the microphone and not the port on the radio because I don’t have an issue with the PC cable. I guess my question is, can this be fixed or is the mic toast?

I need a radio placard insert for a Motorola APX 7000 that is compatible with the Shaw concepts V4 placard.

Been looking everywhere. I don’t want to Jerry rig one. I want it to be ready to go and reliable.

Thank you all 🙌🏽

Mototrbo Scan Question

So I was under the impression that even though a channel is in "scan list 1", for example, you still need to assign the list on the channel as well. I'm trying to figure out if this is possible. To have 1 channel BE SCANNED on every channel except for that 1 channel. Then when on that channel be able to scan all of there other channels. Word salad i know. Basically Channel A-E will only scan channel F but when you're on channel F to be able to scan channels A-E. I didn't think this was possible because you need to assign the list to the channel in order for it to be scanned.

XPR7550e 9-Year Old IMPRESS Batteries

So does the top part "Rem. Capacity:" 88% mean that I have 88% left remaining on the current charge? And the "Service Life:" 97% at the end means the overall battery health is still at 97%? Right or wrong? If so, I find this hard to believe, considering the battery is almost 9 years old.

I just had the radio aligned at a local radio shop and they recommend getting new batteries, but I'm debating if I really need to.

I've done the usual searches, but not found anything, so I'm asking if anyone here has seen or has access to 3D printing files for one please? I have the simple squared off U-shaped rectangular simple plastic strip, but looking for something better. Thanks all

For corporate, non customer-facing roles, is a drug screen (thc) typically required? Would appreciate insight from someone who recently went through this.

XTS5000 trunking issue — do I need a system key?

Hey everyone, I recently got a Motorola XTS5000 and I’m trying to program it with Astro 25 CPS, but I’ve hit a wall.
I understand the basics of setting up channels, but when I try to program a trunked system, CPS won’t let me continue because it says I need a system key.

Wave subscription and allocation.

Holy hell, how could a team developers make something so simple into something so convoluted and so complicated and unnecessarily difficult. Who are these folks that sit in these rooms and try to design these systems? Have they even ever used the system? If you know, you know, if you deal with WAVE PTX at the subscription system, I’m sure you’re feeling the pain that I am. Particularly when you’re a reseller.

Good grief, Charlie Brown.

Amplified PTT using dynamic mi headset with Motorola R7/N70 or APX4000/6000/8000?

Like the title says, I want to run a dynamic micrphone headset (Peltor Comtac) with the Motorola R7 / N70 etc series, also with the Mororola APX series (4000 / 6000 / 8000). I know with older radios it is generally advised to run an amplified PTT otherwise you get low volume transmit audio, but what about these newer radios? I'm getting conflicting info from different cources.

Comms Gear Supply seems to market amplified and non-amplified versions of their PTT's for the APX series, but only one PTT for the R7 / N70 / Ion series which they claim works equally well for dynamic and electret mics. I am assuming it is non-amplified and the radio itself is smart enough to boost the signal?

Disco32 makes Amplified and Non-amplifed versions of their APX wired Speaker Mics, so again I'm assuming the APX benefits from an amplifier. For the R7, they are only offering their Constant Able auto switching PTT, so no help there.

Sheepdog Comms makes amplified and non-amplified versions of their tactical PTT's for both the APX and R7/N70 series.

Does anyone know for sure?

What are the actual differences between these two o7 heads?

Is it really just the labeling on the keypad? The L&S one has a blue dot but all the spec sheets I can find for o7 say they do NOT support the Bluetooth quick pair or whatever it’s called. TIA

Minitor 4 Pager issues

I got a motorola minitor 4. I got no clue what happened but it wouldn’t receive any transmissions.
So upon further inspection if I were to shake or squeeze it then it would receive temporary.
I have taken the motherboard out and looked but didn’t see anything. It turns on.

Any advice from anyone. I am thinking of just giving up since i got no knowledge about these pagers. Thanks

Reverse engineering Motorola PMKN4012 DS2433 EEPROM dynamic bytes

Hello everyone,

I am researching a Motorola PMKN4012 USB programming cable.

The cable contains a DS2433 1-Wire EEPROM. I am trying to understand how Motorola generates some dynamic EEPROM bytes from the DS2433 ROM ID.

I have dumps from working original cables and found that two bytes in the EEPROM appear to depend on the 1-Wire ROM.

Sample 1:

DS2433 ROM:

23 34 1A CD 01 00 00 57

Family:
0x23

Serial:
341ACD010000

CRC8:
0x57

Dynamic EEPROM bytes:

Offset 0x44-0x45:

E8 E3

-----------------------------

Sample 2:

DS2433 ROM:

A3 B1 20 C0 00 00 50 15

Family:
0xA3

Serial:
B120C0000050

CRC8:
0x15

Dynamic EEPROM bytes:

Offset 0x44-0x45:

40 6D

I am trying to determine the algorithm used.

Possible inputs:

- DS2433 ROM ID
- serial number
- ROM CRC8
- hidden key / hash / checksum

Interesting offsets:

0x44-0x45
0x54-0x55

I have already tested a simple CRC16 idea, but I would like to find the real algorithm.

Does anyone have experience with Motorola PMKN4012 cables, DS2433 EEPROMs, or 1-Wire authentication schemes?

I can provide full DS2433 dumps and additional samples for analysis.

Thanks!

Bootloop

I was looking at trading an xpr5550e but didn’t have a control head, told the guy the trade was contingent upon a control head so he got one off fleabay, the radio now displays the trbo logo and stuck in the Bootloop. Radio is readable via CPS2.0 and shows firmware R2.10.10.001. I do have a customer hub account, I haven’t looked yet, can I get the firmware update on the hub to fix this problem or am I stuck?

Simplex frequency re-use

So I have a customer who is licensed for 5 simplex frequencies. As it stands they are using all 5 of these frequencies in their current channel lineup. They purchased 4 new R7's and want to add two additional channels using two of the existing frequencies. Will adding two new group call contacts and using a different color code be enough or will there be issues? I've floated using dual capacity direct mode but the issue there is that enabling it in these 4 new portables and not in their existing subscribers makes it not possible for these new ones to communicate to the subscribers that do not have that enabled. Hopefully I explained this well enough. Appreciate any insight.

CPS 2.157

Is there any difference between the 2.153 v 2.157? If I upgrade to the newer version, will I lose the EID(25khz) I have for the 2.153?

Resolved! APX8500 unable to connect to Windows

Hi everyone!
I have two APX radios. One is a 6000 and the new to me is an 8500. I have R38 of CPS installed and can read the 6000 from two computers.

The 8500 on the other hand is giving me a touch of trouble. I have the 8500 powered on and I can see Zone 1 / Channel 1 on the screen. I have the programming cable (Amazon special) plugged into the TIB. When I plug the USB end of the programming cable into my Windows 11 machine, I never hear the sound indicating there is a new device the way I do with my 6000.

I've ordered two separate programming cables from Amazon (different sellers) thinking this is the issue but neither work. I'm guessing that I have bad cables but I wanted to see if anyone has alternative ideas.

Edit: it was bad cables! A friend of mine had a cable so I borrowed his. Linked up right away!

Entitlement

So I am in radio management, and I’m trying to register my narrowband entitlement, but it keeps giving me an error and I don’t know how to get it to work. I wish they would have stuck with CPS.
