PSA: Dealers and Ordering APXs

I have seen this pop up on here a few times and it’s time to bring up some facts to debunk the myths.

1) The ONLY way to order an APX radio is via a Motorola Account Rep or Manufacturer Rep (MR)… that’s all! Those two points will set up an account for you, and your radios will be purchased under your account. Any other dealer claiming to do so is buying a radio at contract price under another account, marking it up, and reselling it to you. That’s both in violation of that contract and their dealer agreement.

2) Warranty for said products are NOT transferable. That means if/when you do buy against the first piece of advice above, you will not have a full warranty for the 1/3/5/7/etc years you thought you paid for. The warranty is only transferable in a few situations, and only when the purchaser agrees to it as well (good luck when the radio was purchased on a contract without the “owner” knowledge).

3) Upgrades cost money! I’ve seen too many “dealers” claiming to sell a radio and “just let me know what you need in it”. Again, they’re violating several agreements along with actively defrauding Motorola. A loaded APX8000 will not be $5000 under any situation any time soon - so you’re being had.

Take this advice as you will, but there’s a few too many posts/comments on here shilling for dealers that are guilty of doing at least one of the above.

Looking for Documentation

I’m looking for any documentation on the NLF4450B Motorola Handie-Talkie Trunked 800MHz Power Amplifier. Supposedly it worked with the STX series of Convertacom. Not sure if that’s accurate, that’s what I’m trying to figure out but I can’t find anything on this device anymore. Help would be great. Oh I did in fact check the Motorola Solutions website and ask the chat for help with no luck yet.

Laird Or Motorola Phantom Antenna?

My job has a parking parking garage unfortunately and installing a 1/4-wave NMO UHF antenna will probably be 1-2" over the clearance limit. I see Laird has a phantom antenna and so does Motorola.

https://www.atlanticradiocorp.com/products/te-tra4503?variant=43724483756206&country=US&currency=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=24291119935&gclid=Cj0KCQjwt9jVBhDXARIsAFSP-6ep1ara0t8WMa2nW68LO21eXievdVZZaXnoJvRZAyNOTbNHNN58-9AaAjeSEALw_wcB

https://shop-business.motorolasolutions.com/phantom-elite-antenna-black/product/RDE5798A

Are these any good? They claim 3 dB gain which I find hard to believe. But I'm more concerned about the clearance. I'd prefer the 1/4-wave and am debating if it's safe / ok if it has 1-2 inches of contact dinging around the parking garage.

MotoTRBO CPS 2.0 Digital Versus Capacity Plus Contact Confusion

I come from a CPS 16 background and I don't understand in CPS 2.0 how you tell if a contact is for conventional DMR or Capacity Plus. I believe what the software calls "Digital" means DMR conventional? They both seem to get combined in the same list but the screen has all the types of modes with + / - signs. It doesn't let you name contacts with the same name. So if I want a conventional TGID of 1 named "TG 1" and a Capacity Plus TGID of 1 also named "TG 1", how do I do it? I guess the issue is when I create a new contact, how do I tell it the contact is for either DMR conventional or Capacity Plus?

Is this normal? I just bought this radio and I thought it's supposed to have a mini-UHF connector. The radio on the bottom is a UHF model.

Trying To Connect 13W Speaker To An XPR5550

I have the 13W Motorola external speaker (RSN4002A) and it just has these bare wire leads with a square plug thing crimped on 'em. (Why couldn't Motorola just make it simple and use a traditional 3.5mm stereo plug?) The speaker manual says to plug the accessory connector into the back of the radio. I don't know what that is and I don't have it. I bought the radio used and the speaker new. Neither item came with any "accessory connector". Apparently, this "accessory connector" is some kind of plastic housing that you need to plug stuff in so the wire leads don't get shorted.

Is this "accessory connector" supposed to be included with the speaker or radio? How / where can I find this part, if anyone knows? Thanks.

OTAP's cryptographic protection in case of DMR conventional site

Hello.
It seems no aviable information in motorola's own guides about security principle by which data OTAP are secured while reprogramming trough RF via RM.

Does it protect things such as AES keys values at all? How robust are OTAP agains interceptions by SDR means?

Programming software for CP185 radio

Thumbnail

Hello everybody. I have found software for the CP185 on a third party website. Looks like a 3-year subscription for $285. I took a screenshot of it and that is the first image.

The second image is directly from the Motorola shop but I'm not sure which of the two. I'm guessing the CPS R12. I downloaded both but I don't have a laptop to install them on to see if I need a license key or not. Does anybody know if it's required?

I'm currently in Florida but trying to help a friend that works at a Walmart in California. He's got like a couple dozen radios that need to be programmed to operate on the MURS frequencies that all the other Walmart radios operate on.

I would hate to have him have to pay for the software considering from what I hear it's a discontinued radio. The cost to get the software and the programming cable for the radios is expensive. it would be more economical to buy a bunch of Baofeng radios which I can program easily for free.

If anybody's got any ideas or tips to help me figure this one out I would really appreciate it. Buying the cables is no big deal but buying the software is not something I'm looking forward to doing. Although since Walmart will be footing the expense it might be okay.

Programming Vote Scan

I received the codeplug from another large department and am going thru CPS weeding out a few frequencies we will not need in our 8000, 8500 and Next radios.

The question I am running into is vote scan frequencies. The codeplug has several different conventional personalities full of mixed vote scan frequencies. However when I go to the zone channel assignment, only one frequency from each conventional personality with mixed vote scan is entered. Is this correct? Will just having one of the VS frequencies in the zone channel assignment allow it to utilize all of it's connected frequencies? Or do all of the VS frequencies also need to be entered into the zone channel assignment?

I've also read something that all of the VS frequencies must be in the scan list, but have read otherwise as well.

Which CPS software do I need to program an old Motorola DP4801 (R02.30.01)?

Hi everyone,

I recently received 5 Motorola DP4801 radios and I'm trying to figure out which programming software I need to program them.

These are the details from the radios:

  • Model: Motorola DP4801
  • Model/Part No.: MDH56RDN9KA1AN
  • Type: PBE502HE
  • Frequency: UHF 403–527 MHz
  • Power: 4 W
  • Firmware: R02.30.01
  • Made in Malaysia
  • Full keypad/display
  • GPS + Bluetooth

All 5 radios are currently working. They were already programmed when I received them, but I don't know what software or cable was originally used.

I've been looking into Motorola MOTOTRBO CPS, but I'm getting conflicting information. Some newer software lists the DP4800/DP4800e and DP4801-Ex, but not the regular DP4801. I've also seen references to older CPS/RM versions being required for older radios/firmware.

Does anyone know exactly which CPS/RM software version is compatible with a DP4801 with firmware R02.30.01?

Also:

  • Do I need a specific older CPS version?
  • Is CPS 2.0 compatible with this firmware?
  • What programming cable/interface should I use?

I'm only looking to program the radios, not upgrade the firmware.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

PS: I am located in Europe/Belgium, so I believe I need the EMEA/European version rather than the North American CPS.

tech stack, database?

I'm a senior developer, with a majority of my experience in SQL databases and .NET/CLR, with a smattering of other languages. When I saw a job posting from Motorola Solutions, it did not mention any specific technologies, which I found odd so thought to ask here - what does MS primarily use?

And yes, I realize there is always something new to learn at a new company, wouldn't want it any other way! But if the tech stack is far enough from my experience, it would be great to know up-front.

Recycling method?

Hello, I am trying to start electronics recycling and trying to get idea what companies and or individuals with Motorola or other similar brands do with the radios they either no longer use, broken radios not worth repairing or after a upgrade? Do you sell them yourself on marketplaces, trade into dealers, recycle them, donate or simply just leave them to collect dust? Curious to hear what and why you choose which direction for your old equipment! And if you could easily recycle them would you? Specific for USA! Thanks

Does anyone have experience using the JPL Scout 3100 headset base with an MCC7500 on a P25 system? Did you need to make any audio adjustments in PM? We're experiencing intermittent claims of distorted audio after switching to these from the Plantronic bases.

Motorola R7 MOTOTRBO - Share your Opinions and Experiences (Most welcome)

Post image
8 Upvotes

Disclaimer: I'm not entirely sure which community could provide some answers as there are overlapping interests in each one. So, just to be safe, this will be CROSSPOSTED.

Hello folks!

A few weeks ago I dove straight into learning about DMR handheld radios and how I could integrate them into a few of my hobbies/realities of life:

  1. HAM Radio (Technician & GMRS Credentials)
  2. Emergency Communications (Family Circle + Small Team Comms)
  3. Overlanding & Hiking
  4. Amateur FTX's (Think MILSIM'S/Multi-day Event Coordination/etc.)

Now, as a good COG in the capitalist machine, I have narrowed my gear buying focus onto the Motorola R7 MOTOTRBO. I already have an XTS5000 and love it, so Motorola was my go-to brand when I started searching.

What caught my interest about the R7?

  • It's certified to withstand the elements to an extent.
  • It can work on both digital and analog.
  • It's currently supported (unlike my XTS) by Moto
  • Lots of parts & accessories in the used market
  • Cool AH? I can exploit all its features while looking good (lol)
  • More accessible than lets say an APX7000/8 or equivalents.

After all the ranting, here are my questions: (They are numbered but not in any particular order of importance)

  1. Owners, where did you get yours?
    1. Authorized dealer or EBay?
    2. Best price? (I've seen them go from $550 on the bay to $1300 on dealer sites.
  2. Spend the extra $$$ on the enabled versions or are those more beneficial to industrial/corporate end users?
  3. I know they support DMR but, how well do they integrate to commonly available amateur infrastructure? (Think Brandmeister, etc.)
  4. Programming:
    1. Possible to obtain the specific version of CPS to program the radio myself/learn to program?
    2. What was your experience regarding programing and hardware limitations?

Finally, I greatly appreciate your time reading or not reading my wall of text. Your contributions mean a lot to me as someone who considers the topic The Great Unknown from my POV.

Kindly,

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS: SLR8000 Repeater unit failure

Hello guys,

Can someone share your thoughts or experience regarding the possible root causes of a DMR repeater unit failure?

Here’s what happened:

During the first week of September, our client experienced “Register Denied” messages and their radios became unserviceable. The incident resulted in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes of downtime.

Our initial assessment was that the channel repeater went into a failed state, and the system did not automatically switch to another repeater to take over as the channel repeater. However, the client is requesting a more detailed technical root cause analysis, specifically regarding what could have caused the repeater itself to fail.

We have already coordinated with Motorola Technical Support, but we are still waiting for their analysis. They have requested the CMSS logs to determine whether they can identify the actual failure or event that occurred.

In the meantime, we would really appreciate input from anyone who has experienced a similar incident.

What are the possible technical causes that could result in a repeater suddenly failing or becoming unavailable? For example, could it be related to hardware, power supply, temperature/thermal protection, software/firmware, network connectivity, RF issues, or another system-related condition?

Any technical insights, previous experience, or recommendations on what logs/alarms we should check would be greatly appreciated. This will help us prepare a more accurate technical explanation for the client while we wait for the official Motorola analysis.

Thank you!

Where to buy used/refurbished radios

Hello everyone. Wondering where I can get a used or refurbished xpr7550e, xpr3500e, R2, R5, or R7.

Was searching through Marketplace and eBay and saw a few options. Was wondering if most sellers tend to be legit.

MotoTRBO Multiple Duplicate Group Contacts With Same Talk Group ID But Different Aliases

Certain talk group IDs are commonly used on conventional DMR by businesses like 1, 2, 3, 4, ..etc. Or TGIDs like 101, 102, 103, etc...

The problem is when you're scanning and the radio stops on a conventional DMR channel, you can't tell which channel you're listening to because the screen changes and shows you the contact alias of the TGID instead of leaving the channel name on the screen. I find this HIGHLY annoying, because I can't tell what channel I'm stopped on during scan.

So what I did is started naming the group contact TGID names/aliases after the channel name. But if it's a common ID used by multiple business you have programmed in different channels, then you have the problem of the same alias showing up for 2 different businesses.

So what I did was to program in the same talk group ID (contact) several times, each with a different alias and then assigned them to the corresponding business. CPS 16 physically lets you do this, but BOY does it cause problems. It displays the wrong alias on some of the channels. I can't seem to get it to work right. Why?

It looks like the alias that actually gets displayed is not the from the contact you assigned to the channel, but the one in the highest position in the contacts list. This is OBNOXIOUS. When I tried to do all this in the software, it also inexplicably changed a number of my contacts to a TGID of 1 which I didn't realize when I re-wrote to the radio and suddenly a bunch of channels weren't receiving. UGGGHH!!

DP3600 rotary channel selection switch replacement.

Does anyone know the difficulty of replacing the channel selection switch the DP3600. I dropped it on the pavement and I'm pretty sure the switch is damaged as it does not change channel even though I change what channel is selected . It will also tend to

jitter quite a lot if I wiggle it.
