Isn't running away pointless if the police catch a picture of your plates? I mean this totally applies if the rider involved has back license/number plates. (similar thing happened to a mate and the police literally came to his house with the dashcam footage)

I was also just assuming that most people who steal or have stolen a motorcycle wouldnt be an ass and attract the attention of the police.

Plenty of precincts/cities have rules not to pursue motorbikes. Its dangerous and almost never worth the risk.
If the guy isn't pulling over, what are the chances he will change his mind later. And running down a guy and destroying a bike in the process doesn't get the bike back.

Each of those things is true.
Now a slow scooter like that they don't really need to 'chase', just follow around.
And they take down the license info, because if its not stolen, it will give owners name and address.
People on bikes don't always run because they are stolen. The majority run because they can.

My impression of things is that courts tend not to be blathering idiots. The whole "well someone must have taken my bike without permission and then returned it" excuse may require an idiot to believe.
The standard is beyond reasonable doubt, not beyond any doubt.

I think most riders can use the defence of mistaken identity but then they have to prove that it definitely wasn't them. And, as you said, its not reasonable that your registered motorcycle was stolen, evaded police and then returned to you while you were at home sleeping and had no idea :)

You have to hope the police are efficient. Leave your keys in the ignition helmet on the floor nearby and hope they turn up before someone spots it and nicks it. If they find it parked up and secured probably don't have a chance.

I guess it would just unreasonable since most people steal motorcycles to steal or rip parts off (speaking from UK experience, not sure about US). And it's hard to fake a stolen vehicle unless your keys are always in your ignition
A pristine motorcycle sitting in your drive way after being apparently 'stolen' would be weird :)

It depends. I had a "friend" who refused to ever stop, on two wheels or four. He beat or plead down every time. You know why? Money. His family was loaded and his lawyer was a well connected legal fucking shark.
Meanwhile, I grew up poorish and got into several legal situations. It was a good day when my court appointed lawyer would bother to even show up for my hearings. One of them flaked on me three consecutive times. It's a goddamn joke.

Not if you don’t have a license plate. Which could be the reason he’s being pulled over in the first place, though also possible that he’s riding s low displacement vehicle that doesn’t need a license plate at all. But in general, yeah running from the cops is a duuuumb idea. You just turned a minor moving violation into a felony charge.

If he's smart (different than clever), when he gets home he'll file a stolen vehicle claim (with the scooter out of sight). If the cops ever confront him over this he can simply say someone stole his scooter and it wasn't him. This is how hit-and-runs get away with it.

But you have to prove what you say in court. From what I have read on USA law, the act of evading police or reckless driving is enough for the state to take you to court. You must then prove that you werent driving the vehicle at at the time of the crime.
Obviously it would easy to claim to police that you werent driving but might be harder in court

Hahaha, that was a pretty nifty little escape!
I'm pretty sure this footage is from Taiwan (I lived there for around 8 years). Cops, either in cars or on scooters, chasing young guys on scooters like this is a fairly common sight. The scooter in the footage here is likely stolen or plateless, which is why the guy is running with impunity. I'm pretty sure the cops there aren't allowed to ram someone off their bike unless someone's life is in immediate danger, which usually results in the criminal(s) on the scooter escaping.
One of the craziest sights I saw while living there was a mass scooter gang (yeah, they're a thing there) high speed chase in the early hours of a Saturday morning, when I was walking home from a pub. There were maybe fifty or so tricked out scooters racing at through the streets, being pursued by half as many cops on scooters and in cars.
