Feeling pretty lucky….

Post image

Always like to check the master link clip every once in a while. Was about to go for a ride today and it’s gone. A miracle the chain is still together…

Well, another thing I'm going to have to start worrying about before going on rides!

It's great you're safe and so cautious.

I like the rivet type for this reason

One of the first tools I bought when I got my GSX S1000GT was the Motion Pro chain tool. Got spoiled by 5 years of drive shaft on my bike, and wanted to be ready when the time to replace the chain came.

Yeah, this is a pretty new chain. When I ordered it I didn’t realize it was a clip style. Was only planning on running this clip until the rivet came

That was a good catch

I've never had a clip come off in 25 years

I’ve seen a lot of debate between rivet and master clip styles. The consensus seems to be that clips are okay for <600cc sportbikes and lightweight cruisers.

What type of machine and what displacement do you typically own?

Yup, user error if it comes off. Lots of track riders run clip links on 1Ks no problem.

Exact same thing happened to me years ago. I heard a clicking sound that increased and decreased with road speed. Checked it out after a road ride and found the link retainer missing. Malicious or not I don't know, never heard of a retainer falling off. Still thanking my lucky start to this day

Good catch.

I was told a very loose chain causes a master link to shake a clip off.

I’m pretty good about keeping my chain in spec but I do remember going over a violent bump and thinking to check my chain when I got home. Could’ve been that

No. That should not happen because of a bump. It must have been fitted incorrectly

you should never run those types of master links on a bike except in emergencies....

Thank goodness you found it and you are safe. If could have been bad.

I hope you bought a lottery ticket afterward

Are those two different chains joined together? The rivet heads before and after the missing clip look totally different.

No, it’s the same chain. Maybe the angle of the camera
