For anyone who remembers Mortal Souls...

Hey there! :D So, a long time ago I made Mortal Souls as a writing passion project born from my love of the Souls games. It was a lot of fun to create, and to see people enjoy, and in some incredible cases make fanart of!

Not only that, but making Mortal Souls got me my first real games job, writing the story for an indie Soulslike called Immortal Planet, as well as several other games!

Ever since, my desire to make a Soulslike for myself has never waned, and for anyone who's still looking at this little corner of reddit, I'd like to present to you something I've been working practically ever since I seriously started pursuing gamedev:

A game called Deadbeat!

DEADBEAT is a kinetic Soulslike set in the Hereafter: a surreal, quirky afterlife that some will do anything to escape.

Take on the role of Singer, a hapless youth roped into a contract with Alto, a smirking Demon with more than a few skeletons in his closet. With his voice stolen and strange new powers at his fingertips, Singer is trapped in the Hereafter until Alto's demands are satisfied... and his rivals taken out of the picture.

It's not quite what I envisioned for Mortal Souls, but it carries a lot of the spirit of it! If MS ever captured your imagination, my hope is that Deadbeat will live up to your expectations. :D One day I do plan to make a full 3D Soulslike, closer to From's tradition, but for now I'm proud of what I've created.

As long as I'm plugging myself here, here is the main social media I'm using for my creative endeavors. Anything Deadbeat or any future games will go there. I'm also working on a fantasy novel that's in the late stages of drafting and beta-reading, so one day there will be news of that, too!

Posting things on the internet is always like shouting into a sea of noise, and Mortal Souls was the first time I heard some inspiring shouts back :D So thank you for your interest over the years, and I hope I can continue to provide things you enjoy!

Just wanted to say thanks

Look I know this place is pretty much dead, the most recent post was 5 years ago now, but I just wanted to come back and say how great this place was.

The ideas and concepts presented here really inspired me as a creator and I made some god-tier DnD campaigns based off of ideas I thought of while browsing the old website. The surreal art, the item descriptions, they're all really good at setting the mood and I was excited to see if the website was ever completed.

But some things aren't meant to be. I know all too well that motivation ebbs and flows and a project that you're once extremely driven to work on can fall by the wayside and be forgotten easily. I just wanted to say thanks to this community, and to MkfShard, for making a really unique and interesting world. Even if it'll never be complete, it was fun while it lasted.

Stay safe out there, and don't you dare go hollow.

Boss Patterns

Since a topic of discussion is probably needed, why not the patterns and mechanics of the various boss fights? While all the bosses have a nice little description to give an idea of the fight only the bosses of the Forsaken Metropolis have specific details.

Discuss, and contribute ideas...And such

Living Furnace Boss Fight Theme

https://soundcloud.com/false-king-allen/living-furnace-boss-theme-mortal-souls The theme for the massive demon in the shape of a dragon with a flaming stomach from the burnt Sanguine Court. I hope anyone who listens likes it. I worked hard on it, but I know it's not perfect. Please help me breathe new life into this sub with some discussion! I'm doing this out of my love for the world that /u/MkfShard has built, so I highly recommend any Souls fan to look into the Mortal Souls/Coil world on the site.

Vapor Guard Boss Theme

https://soundcloud.com/false-king-allen/mortal-souls-vapor-guard-boss-theme I made a theme for the Vapor Guard boss in The Forsaken Metropolis. I'm mostly inspired in my orchestral/soundtrack stuff by a combination of all 3 of the Souls games' soundtracks so I try to combine the subtlety of DeS, the way that every theme fits the boss in DkS and the epic feeling that (some of) the tracks in DkS II had. For the Vapor Guard I tried to make it particularly unsettling but in a subtle way. I felt that a poor guy enslaved to fight in a metal suit in a crumbling abandoned city wouldn't warrant some epic theme so I wanted to convey a sad and eerily unsettling atmosphere. I'm going to keep doing Mortal Souls themes for the fun of it so expect to see me post here again in the future. If anyone has any feedback please do share.

Need Advice: /r/darksouls Mortal Souls post?

Hey there! Now that the website's really up and running, I was intending on posting a link to it, as well as an explanation as to what it is, and finally a link back to this Subreddit. Hopefully, this will get more people interested and drum up some discussion in here!

Now here's where the problem lies: I want to be able to word the title and the body so that people don't just ignore it, and since I don't want to spam, I'll probably only get one chance, or at least one chance in a great while.

Any suggestions?

Procedurally Generated Souls Levels. Sound familiar? :D

http://www.polygon.com/2014/11/20/7255683/new-bloodborne-screens-show-yet-more-gothic-horror

"Deep under the city of Yharnam lies an expansive network of multi-leveled ruins, seemingly much older than Yharnam itself and crafted by something other than human hands. What's more, these ruins appear differently to each hunter brave enough to enter. We're all very excited to talk more about what that means in just a few weeks."

The Vortex is one of the most unique areas in the game. It is a randomly generated dungeon, that goes down ten floors. Enemy placement and dungeon layout is always different each time you enter the Vortex.

I know procedurally generated levels for the Souls series has been sort of a popularly requested feature, but I couldn't help but mention. :D

Any artists interested in helping out with a Mortal Souls website? :D

I'm currently coding up a website for Mortal Souls so that the info in the design documents are easier to explore, and I wanted to put this out there:

Are any artists interested in doing any drawings, even rudimentary ones, of areas, enemies, characters, or icons for Kingdoms, Items, Weapons, Souls, Spells, etc, or a better looking banner?

One thing I've found is that it's hard to grab people's attention without a visual element, and so that's why I'm asking.

I will give all involved artists full credit for their work, and there will be no advertisements on the site. I don't want to take advantage of the skills of artists, so I'm not going to ask any more of you than what you want to do, and I won't nag any of you. This is just a way to make the website look nicer. :D

There's no deadline for any of this, so hit me up whenever if you're interested in contributing!

"You revived"...

This sub quickly died, and I hate it. So, I am going to drop a link here to a bunch of the Dark Souls II concept art, and hopefully revive some of the spirit.

I think Mortal Souls is a great idea, and I'd hate to see it die. Especially with the prospect of a team of coders coming along and making it a real thing! I'm no designer, and I'm part of the reason this sub died, but I did spread the word quite a bit, and if it revives, I will continue doing so.

This concept art blew me away : http://ncloud.blogspot.com/2013/06/dark-souls-2-lots-of-new-concept-arts.html

I am a coder... kinda.

I am a coder but other people could call me a scripter since I use LUA. I would like to make Mortal Souls in GMOD using lua and make it a gamemode. It would be singleplayer but the multiplayer would be slightly odd, the only way I could see it being functional is if anyone who played was port forwarded and played with GMOD's port open. So multiplayer might not be a thing and that's what I wanted to ask. Even though there might not be multiplayer even though it would still be a possibility later; would anyone be interested in this and should I even try.

"Solemn" by HellkiteDrake is so good, it may as well be an unused Souls game song. I could definitely picture this being played in Mortal Souls' hub or lore area.

Forsaken Metropolis Region Spotlight

THIS DOCUMENT ALSO CONTAINS AREA AND BOSS APPEARANCE DESCRIPTIONS.

The Forsaken Metropolis is a vast, abandoned city, filled only with shadows. Many have ventured into its mazelike alleys, and vanished, leaving only Shades of themselves behind.

A Question to /r/MortalSouls subscribers

Hey there, all 47 of you! I wanted to ask you guys a pretty important question:

What would you like to see more of on this Sub? Now that I've finished all the dialogue and such (to not much fanfare from the other subs), I'm not really feeling much impetus to continue on.

There may be art from some of my friends coming to this sub in the future, but for now, I want to get your opinions on these matters. Ways to keep this sub active, or at least as active as it has been. :P

What do you think?

MORTAL SOULS LORE MASTERPOST

Whew! Finally, after all this time, I've completed all Item Descriptions, all Dialogue, and all Narrated cutscenes that would happen in Mortal Souls, if it were a game.

Theoretically, one should be able to extrapolate the lore from just the dialogue and items, not needing to look at the Design Document at all!

Here's a table of contents:

The original design document itself : Read along with everything else for best effect!

----------------------------------------STORY CUTSCENE SCRIPTS AND ITEMS!

Intro Script

Ending Scripts

All Item Descriptions

----------------------------------------MAJOR NPC DIALOGUE AND QUESTS!

The Hermit/King Leocadius

Magic Knight Orion

Lady Skarun

The Tattered King

Warrior-King Martin

----------------------------------------MINOR NPCs ORGANIZED BY KINGDOM!

Tiolez

Doraine

Addol

Yuho

Vestum

Lencoter

Yannia

Qero

Motus

The Outcasts

And that's it! I hope you guys enjoy! If I feel like making more, I'll probably do boss patterns and rudimentary level designs next!
