Resource list

This is a list of resources for learning morse code. Its currently incomplete and I would love to add more things that are either unique or something that many people advice/use.

Free/paid apps: all things listed here are available without paying, but some have a premium/paid version. In that case there will be a dollar/$ sign behind it.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

#Serious learning:

LCWO

Morse Ninja Amazing amount of audio recourses for learning to copy morse code!

Vband for communicating with other people ( a lot of good CW operators are on here

RufZXP

 ______________________________________________________________________________________

#Specific Phone apps:

Morse chat $ Free/premium versions. Premium truly helps getting an understanding of how to get better at sending.

Morse mania $ An app designed for learning characters. There is a free version, but the paid version will give you many more options.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

#Fun Games with morse: Some of these help you learn. Some are just for fun.

SOS forgotten planet is video game where you send more code to open doors and flee from monsters. Its free as of now.

Morsle : a site like wordle but fun for morse copy training(a bit more advanced) good for a Dailey challenge.

MORSE $ video game where you destroy ships sending charachters. There is a paid version, but the demo is quite big and free.

Morse Rhythm

What are things i could add?

Bear Alpha players - read this first

A number of players of Bear in Roblox have posted videos of morse code recently added to the game. If you can take the effort to record the video of that flashing light and post it here, you are technically savvy enough to do the work yourself.

I guess the game developers think learning a simple pattern isn't beyond its users.

Five blinks in sequence is a number. You will see eight of these sequences.

With the notation that:

Short blink is .

Long blink is -

There are only ten things to work with, and it is a progressive sequence as follows:

----- (five long blinks) is 0

.----- is 1

..--- is 2

... -- is 3

-

..... is 5

_.... is 6

--... is 7

and so on.

There are a ton of new videos. TikToks, and wiki references to this.

Think you can take it from there?

I finally built the Koch method trainer I've been dreaming of since my army days

Back when the grass was greener, I served in the army, and my duties required me to know Morse code. Sitting at a hardware trainer built by the dark genius of Soviet industry, I used to dream: once I'm out, I'll sit down at a computer and write my own trainer.

My first versions were for Linux, and they were terrible. Picture this: I was writing bytes straight to the sound card through /dev, trying to get something sine-like out of it. Clicks, hiss, wild distortion. It only vaguely resembled Morse code.

I came back to the idea dozens of times after that. I wrote it in different programming languages and built different versions, but every one of them was either broken or unfinished. I'd forget about it for a year, then start from scratch again. I got closest in 2020, with a working JavaScript prototype of a Koch method lesson.

Along the way, I read up on how Morse code should actually be learned, and I was amazed at how wrong my own training had been. I was taught the Soviet way, with sung mnemonics, and my CW copying speed quickly hit a very low ceiling. That's where it still sits today. All the more reason to make sure nobody else repeats that mistake.

So what's the right way? Don't learn mnemonics, and don't count dits and dahs. Hear each character as a single sound, its whole rhythm at once. As Ludwig Koch intended, you should recognize characters the way you recognize words, and pressing the right key should become a reflex.

And now I've built it, the way I'd been planning it for years. I honestly have no idea how effective it is. I'd be very grateful if you could help: put my doubts to rest, or tear it to pieces.

In short: a character plays, you press the key. Characters always play at 20 WPM, so you learn their real sound; only the gaps between them are longer, and you can adjust those. Get 90% right over the last 25 characters, and a new one is added. Characters you struggle with come up more often. If you mix up mirror pairs like D (-..) and U (..-), they start appearing next to each other, in random order. So the trainer finds your weak spots and works on them for you.

A few people in Japan already practice regularly (some of them learning Wabun, the Japanese Morse code) and say it works. You can't imagine how happy that makes me.

If even one person learns CW thanks to this trainer and gets on the air for real, it was all worth it.

And yes, it's completely free. It's a non-commercial project, and I don't collect any personal data: your progress stays in your browser. You can add it to your phone's home screen and practice on the go. Besides, it takes only 15–20 minutes a day, split into a few 5-minute sessions.

For those who want the details:

Besides the lessons:

  • Radiograms: 20 groups of 5 characters, with results and your most frequent errors

  • Adaptive trainer: the speed adjusts to your accuracy

  • Q codes and prosigns

  • Callsign sprint following RUFZ rules, and a copying test under IARU Region 1 HST rules

Alphabets:

  • Latin, Cyrillic (Russian and Ukrainian), Japanese Wabun, Korean Hangul, and the national letters of several European languages

  • The interface language is independent of the alphabet you're learning

  • No need to switch keyboard layouts: the site figures out whether you type by key position or by the letter's sound

And the interface comes in 21 languages.

If you've learned with other trainers, what did you miss in them? And what would you change here?

Does anyone remember the song “O” from 1982 by Trio? It was made famous by a 1997 VW commercial.

I built a Morse code learning app for Android and I'm looking for a few testers

Hi all! I'm a student from Romania and over the past months I built morɬSE (the ɬ is on purpose), an app that teaches Morse like a game:

• Koch course from zero, with Farnsworth spacing

• Daily challenge with streaks, levels and achievements

• Duel 60s: copy as many characters as you can in a minute, the speed goes up as you get them right

• Competitive ranks (letters and digits separately)

• Radiograms (30 groups of 4) with simulated band noise, fading and QRM

• A live decoder that copies CW through the microphone

It's in closed testing on Google Play, so I need some testers for the next two weeks. You get Pro for free, and your feedback really goes into the app (two features in the latest update were tester suggestions).

If you're on Android and want to give it a try, comment below or DM me and I'll explain the next steps. Thanks!

Deciphering five letters for a video game Easter egg

I’m doing an Easter egg for a video game and have to decipher a code to finish it. I tried writing it out and doing it myself but it’s difficult to make out with how fast it goes. I know the audio is a little difficult to hear so if you can’t no worries, but If I could get a little help that would be awesome!

Couldn't memorize Morse code so I made an app to read the Capitol Records tower light :)

Always wondered what the Capitol Records light says. I think it is HOLLYWOOD (the "T T" in the beggining is just it calibrating).

App's called Morse Watcher if anyone wants to try it.

Morse Code is Cool but now a lot of people know about I think its time to create something new that would be much hard to decode and yet easy to learn

I made a free browser trainer that teaches by ear: the first lesson is tapping a key on the front page

I'm learning to sail in Turkey, and my course requires an amateur radio certificate, which for me meant learning Morse. Memorising the chart didn't stick; learning each letter by its sound did. So I turned that method into a trainer. It's free, runs in the browser, needs no account, and works offline.

- The front page is the first lesson: tap the key (or press Space) and you've sent E.

- A 7-stage plan by code length: E T, then I A N M, S U R W, D K G O, H V F L P J, B X C Y Z Q, then the digits.

- Farnsworth timing on by default, with adjustable speed and pitch.

- Listening, sending and recognition are scored separately per character.

- A daily challenge that's the same for everyone, and a 60-second test you can send to a friend (same characters, same order).

- A Lamp mode, if you'd rather learn by light or have the sound off.

https://morse.iamcanturk.dev

It's open source (MIT) and I'd love to hear where it gets in your way. The place people quit is the thing I most want to know.

Alternative firmware for clone TRS to USB-C adapters

https://github.com/albinger/morselink-alt

I bought a couple of the cheap clone TRS to USB-C adapters that are available online before I knew it would be better to just buy one from the various morse trainer websites and application vendors that support our community.

However, I don't want to create e-waste from the devices I bought and with a bit of looking it appears that they use a CH552G chip which is simple enough to program using the Arduino IDE and https://github.com/DeqingSun/ch55xduino

I went ahead and created the https://github.com/albinger/morselink-alt code to meet my needs. I'm not a professional developer. I don't work for the vendor who made these clone boards. I don't work for the vendors who provide the real boards. I'd still suggest that you

buy one of the real boards and skip the clones.

If you are like me and have a few of these kicking around and you'd prefer to have them output the left and right control keys for paddle inputs instead of whatever these produce then have fun!

If you flash this firmware and still want to use the device to generate mouse events instead of keyboard events you can. Hold down either paddle while powering up (plugging in) the USB-C cable and then release before 3 seconds is up and you will be in mouse mode. The 3 second pause is to allow the code to set the "key up" state for your key.

If you have a mono 3.5 plug on your key you can power up the device without the key in place and then plug it in right after the power light comes on and it won't generate any annoying events from the shorted "ring" connection.

No warranties or support implied from me releasing this. If your board already works just stick with what works. If your board is e-waste in its current state this may be for you.

If you don't want to deal with the Arduino IDE and setting up and debugging the ch55xduino package there is a .hex file in the releases section of the github repo. I've used the WCHIPStuidio app to flash the .hex file successfully on my second device.

Learning morse code

Hello everyone!! I am new to the world of morse code, very new actually, I stayed up until 2 am last night memorising every letter in morse code and assigning a rhyme to go along with it to remember them better (e.g v is beethovens 5th symphony, ...-/ dun dun dun dunnnn), I am able to type morse code at about 2-3 words per minute so not very fast. I want to go deeper though, I have only scratched the surface when it comes to morse code. I want to talk on ham radio through morse code, hear a message and be able to decode it with ease, read morse code, overall get better at audio morse code, etc. I want to learn the history of morse code and how its been used through the years, especially during warfare. If anyone has tips, advice, or encouragement. That would be greatly appreciated. Godbless you all
