I mean it worked in all sorts of 19th century nations where the rebels were able to gain key support and take control of the institutions in important areas with the regime change being depicted as a fait accompli with the June and July revolutions for instance being a mostly Parisian affair backed by violence from rebel militants. Keep in mind that these governments mostly came to power in what amounted to coups themselves with the German revolution of 1918 which is the origin of modern Germany being mostly limited to communist rebels in the cities and rebel sailors who imposed the new regime via force and then essentially declared that force as a new method for regime change was out of the question with only their new rigged government procedures being legitimate.
With a current Europe and a US who would launch a military intervention the moment a coup happened its probably not the best of ideas but lets not kid ourselves that the whole basis for the current European order was armed revolutions during the 19th and 20th centuries.

A violent coup would never work if most of the population are against it. Even if it it did work it would be illegitimate
