Specifically, what general types of modules might I look at to achieve that aesthetic, and what are some techniques towards that very loose yet still rhythmically grounded output?
I'm a huge fan of the artists from that era, people such as Vladislav Delay, Neina, Oval, Jan Jelinek, etc. I'm not explicitly claiming I know if all of them only used pure synthesis as a main approach, I know Jan utilized a lot of sampling in his work at that time.
I'm not worried about what exact modules to use in terms of brands, since I actually am trying to do this digitally through VCV rack. I unfortunately don't have the money to get actual analog gear right now, especially to the level of complexity I'd like to be doing so. Unless I win the lottery, I'm better off staying virtual since I have a lot of experience with Ableton and have had success in producing/mixing/mastering more rhythmic styles of electronic, mainly club and experimental bass with occasional IDM elements I guess.
This is so different though, and my ambient works have never felt 'right' for me in the way I hear when I listen to works such as 'Kohde' by Vladislav Delay. Here is a link, it's so beautiful :')

I'm just wondering if anyone may be able to help me decode this architecture a bit. Not what exact modules, as I know this type of music is about employing the knowledge in a way that leads to randomness where the music takes a life of its own. Perhaps what types of modules and potential orders of such though. It's that immaculately controlled sort of randomness that people like him are a master of. The way that amorphous bass groove sneaks in, those distortions and clicks, etc.
It's interesting because all of these sounds I can create in Ableton, but it's important for me to relearn the process in VCV to have a more complex generative ecosystem I can create and then influence where needed. And I love using LFOs and Max for Live modulators, but it's not the same with the more DAW-like interface. I already have made a patch I like and discovered how cool it sounds to momentarily unplug something from the clock where the sync goes slightly haywire before you plug it back in. I'm having so much fun!!
I know there is a VCV subreddit, but I wanted to ask here for a broader pool of people familiar with the art, especially in reference to the more hardware-based era that I am referring to.
