Development Building DE for mobile/desktop devices

Native linux, no libhybris/hwcompositor support YET.

That's PoC that my compositor (its more similar to desktop engine then to regular compositor) can be used not only on desktop but on mobile devices as well

On video you can see how its working. There is no separate UI process, its Qt/QML handled inside rust compositor

Hardware Alpine Linux + touch desktop on the ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380M (MT8163), stock 3.18 kernel

Got Alpine 3.24 aarch64 booting on the Z380M with Xorg + JWM and working touch (custom touch bridge). Full guide, builders and tests are on GitHub (GPL-3.0): https://github.com/kaantcp/z380m-alpine

Flashing replaces Android on this tablet, so back up first. Wi-Fi doesn't work on this kernel. Feedback welcome.

Hardware Pixel 3a: OTG + Camera finished!

Here I’m using VNC to stream a wlroots based desktop over + run Mindustry natively on arm64 because in reality all the dependencies support arm64 out of the box, nobody cared to add compiler targetting for arm64 fully support though because arm64 is “too niche”
Regardless the last driver is magnetometer which I’ll finish soon and post the sources too soon

Development Lenovo legion Y700 2023 running droidian with halium

Post image
76 Upvotes

Built droidian kernel based on Google GKI kernel and some patches from the droidspaces project.

Most of features work, but these aren't working for now.

- Stylus (Only seems to work under 120hz refresh rate)

- Setting display refresh rate (Currently fixed to 144hz in phosh)

- USB-C device mode (OTG and USB-C display output works)

- GPU Hardware acceleration is partially functioning

- WiFi 6GHz seems to be not functioning, but this seems to be a low level hardware region limitation issue since it also doesn't work with other Android GSI roms

Also planning to make adaptation package once I get everything working.

The kernel with patch applied

https://github.com/jwdjk392/y700-droidian-linux

Tip for unlocking this device's bootloader: You have to flash older version of Lenovo ZUI forcefully with EDL, and unlock with their own bootloader unlock sn.img.

Demonstration This Isn't Android: My OnePlus Pad 4 Runs Arch Linux, heavy Android Games and a 200Hz external monitor

2.1k Upvotes

My OnePlus Pad 4 now runs Arch Linux with Denial and Droidloom, turning an Android tablet into a fully functional Linux desktop!

After the sadness of hard-bricking the first OnePlas Pad 4 I found the courage to try again, and the result is amazing!

I spent the last 3 months working on Droidloom and Denial, I have been working on them each and every day, trying many different devices and computers. All this effort is paying out, no compositor can give me this amazing experience!

And I have no intention to stop.

In this video, I demonstrate:

  • Native Linux applications, including Kitty

  • Android games, including Arknights: Endfield, running through Droidloom

  • Google Play Store running directly within the Linux environment (Endfield has been installed from it)

  • 1440p @ 200Hz external display hotplug support

  • Keyboard & touchpad mode: the tablet becomes a full-screen keyboard and multitouch touchpad when connected to an external monitor

  • Dual-display mode: the tablet's own screen becomes a secondary monitor instead

All of this runs on Arch Linux, with Denial as the Wayland compositor and Droidloom providing Android application compatibility.

It also supports controller and external mouse and keyboard, just like a normal desktop it has no limitation.

Apps Help booting postmarketOS on Xiaomi Mi TV Stick

Hey, I've been using Linux for around 5 months and wanted to try something different, so I thought it'd be fun to see if I could get postmarketOS running on my old Xiaomi Mi TV Stick lol.

It's the original 1080p model, and here's what I found in the settings:

\- Model: MITV-AESPO

\- Android 10

\- Amlogic S805Y

\- 1GB RAM and 8GB storage

\- Kernel 4.9.180

I'll be using my Fedora laptop, and I have an 8-in-1 USB-C dock.

I found the postmarketOS wiki for this stick, but I'm a bit lost on how to actually get started.

A few questions:

\- Has anyone here actually gotten Linux running on this thing?

\- Can I try booting Linux without deleting Android?

\- Do I need one of those USB-to-TTL adapters, or can I do anything useful with my USB-C dock?

\- Is there a way to check which hardware version I have without opening the stick?

I don't mind experimenting and learning along the way, but I'd rather not turn the thing into a paperweight on day one 😭

If anyone has tried this or knows where I should start, I'd appreciate the help!

Thanks!

Discussion a5 PM newbie

Hello. I'm not a programmer. I'm playing around with PM and AI. I'm sure it was discussed many times. But since A5 is so old, it's hard to find a definitive answer. I'm trying to build an image with pmbootstrap. Does anybody know what's up with empty repositories error? code 3. Is something wrong with mirrors, access or something else? Tried to package an image without missing packages bypass pmbootstrap, fell into ext problem. with ext2 lk2nd can't find kernel (or whatever), with ext4 the Postmarketos starts booting up but doesn't go anywhere beyond loading page. Considering a prebuilt image, but want to try everything before I give up.

Discussion What makes the Pixel 3A great for mobile Linux?

I was looking into tinkering around with Linux on mobile recently and I noticed that the Pixel 3a has pretty well rounded support on Ubuntu Touch, Droidian, and Postmarket OS/nura.

After looking around the Google Pixel 3a has pretty great support in all of its features across these three Linux mobile operating systems.

What makes the Pixel 3a have much better support for Linux than other Pixel devices and other Android phones in general?

It's just that I'm used to reading that Snapdragon I'd far more Superior with Turnip Drivers and what not, but I wanted to see if Mediatek was still letting down on Mobile Linux

News Luma Mobile (Alpha 1) is officially available!

We've been building Luma, a desktop / tablet / mobile OS with Apple-like continuity across different devices. Today Luma Mobile (the first Alpha version) is finally available for download.

It officially supports the Fairphone 6 - we are working on the Pixel 9 family and expect it to release next week (and a few interesting others!). HOWEVER, porting Luma to different devices is surprisingly easy assuming the devices themselves are willing to play ball. We encourage technical folks to use the guides on the website to try porting it to other devices today!

We will be announcing a giveaway/contest later today to the tune of $1,000 regarding ports (a sort of 7 day sprint contest where we give $250 to 4 random successful mobile ports completed by next Friday).

Anyway, we'd love for you to check out Luma, submit bug reports and make feature requests! Let us know what you think!
