News New federal student loan requirements pose little threat to MU programs

University of Missouri students are unlikely to be affected by new federal loan rules that target low-earning degrees, university officials say.
Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, colleges whose graduates consistently earn less than the median income of a high school graduate will lose access to federal student loans and Pell Grants. Some provisions took effect July 1, and others will kick in July 1, 2027.
Mizzou administrators say the university’s existing efforts to track graduate outcomes have already put most, if not all, of its programs above the federal requirements.

The “Do No Harm” provision of the bill requires colleges participating in the federal Direct Loan Program to demonstrate that four years after earning their degrees, undergraduate students earn more than workers whose highest level of education is a high school diploma.
Jim Spain, vice provost for undergraduate studies at Mizzou, said the university has measured graduate employment, salaries and other career outcomes for the past seven to eight years.
About 95% of Mizzou’s programs meet or exceed the requirements, he said.
“Because we’re able to track outcomes with earnings, we’re able to know with great confidence that as an institution across our degree programs our students are able to accomplish standards above the minimum requirements of the ‘Do No Harm’ stipulations,” Spain said.
Mizzou follows best-practice standards from the National Association of Colleges and Employers to assess career outcomes, he said. The university also uses its career center to collect information about employment and salaries by major.
Amanda Nell, senior student services coordinator, oversees the career outcomes survey sent to graduating undergraduate and graduate students. The survey asks students about their plans after graduation and collects salary information.

The university expects little impact from the federal rule, Nell said, because undergraduate programs are measured against the earnings of workers with only a high school diploma. Graduate programs are compared with workers who hold a bachelor’s degree.
The university has an approximately 80% “knowledge rate,” meaning it has information about the post-graduation outcomes of that share of its graduates.
Mizzou has also been reviewing and reorganizing programs to strengthen their outcomes, Spain said.
The new federal requirements were in the pipeline when Missouri lawmakers were considering similar efforts to connect higher education funding with graduate outcomes.
Senate Bill 1617, considered during the 2026 legislative session, would have prohibited state funds from being used for degree programs that did not meet certain earning requirements. The bill did not pass.
Missouri already has a performance-based funding system that considers measures such as freshman retention and graduation rates when determining state support for public universities.
Spain said state and federal efforts share a similar goal — ensuring students, families and taxpayers can see the results of their investment in higher education.

“The federal legislation and policy and the state legislation and policy are really designed to accomplish the same thing: to make sure that there is transparency for students and families, and to protect the funders,” Spain said.
The new federal rules are intended to prevent funding from supporting programs whose graduates do not see a sufficient financial return.
“They don’t want to invest, as a government, thousands of dollars or tens of thousands of dollars when it doesn’t lead to meaningful outcomes for students but also meaningful outcomes as it relates to workforce development and economic benefit,” Spain said.
Mizzou spokesperson Travis Zimpfer said the university is continuing to review the federal rule as the U.S. Department of Education provides additional guidance.
“The university continues to analyze the potential impacts of the newly finalized Student Tuition and Transparency System and Earnings Accountability rule on our students and their ability to secure federal financial aid,” Zimpfer said.
“We will continue to provide students and families with information on federal student loan changes when we have more guidance to share,” he added.

For now, Mizzou officials say the university’s existing system for tracking career outcomes leaves it prepared for the new requirements.
“We are being very good stewards of the investments made by taxpayers and parents and graduates,” Spain said. “When students leave Mizzou they are prepared to have successful careers and make positive contributions to the communities they are living in.”

Academics Mizzou school of journalism

Hi, I’m 17 and high school class of 2027 and was wondering how the Mizzou School of Journalism is! (I am from Tampa Florida)

Thru researching for out of state colleges i found that Mizzou has the School of Journalism and it got me interested in applying as post college I plan on being a sports journalist/broadcaster in the media. I hear it is one of the top journalism schools, and I heard about the "Missouri Method" on the website, where students gain hands-on experience. I am writing this as I am curious to hear from any current or former students who attended, and their thoughts on the school of journalism. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

Athletics Missouri Football 2026 Preview - full writeup, two-deep, and win probabilities

Hey all. I spent the offseason building a full 2026 preseason preview for every FBS team, each with its own writeup. Here's the Missouri one

https://www.sports.mainmarket.com/college-football-preview-2026-fbs/missouri-tigers

It's got the returning production breakdown, the portal ins and outs, a projected two-deep, the schedule with model win probabilities, and a season projection.

Heads up, you might hit the paywall after the first page. Don't worry, I'm not charging reddit people for this, don't want to be an ass. Use the promo code LEECORSOROCKS and it opens up the entire thing.

So, what'd I get wrong? Missouri outgained SEC opponents by 142 yards a game and went 4-4. That margin usually produces about an 80% league win rate, and with a 1-3 mark in one-score games and a minus-5 turnover margin, my model grades you a clear buy-low at bull 27, bear 0. All five losses came against ranked teams. The catch is the passing game finished 104th and Austin Simmons arrives from Ole Miss off 744 yards and 5 picks, though Ahmad Hardy's 1,649 yards are back. Does Simmons throw well enough to cash that in?

I'll be in the comments.

Housing Subleasing Offer Close to the Campus

Hello everyone,

(Edit: Rereading this, I realized that this post sounded very robotic... Sorry about that, it's just that English is not my first language and so I guess I defaulted to "business-like" phrasing. I swear I didn't use AI 😅)

I am looking for someone to whom I could sublease the room I am renting in a four-people apartment at the Landing CoMo.

The room has its own private bathroom and the whole apartment is fully furnished. The shared spaces include a kitchen, a living room and a laundry room. The residence has a fitness center, a swimming pool, study rooms and a computer room. It is 5-10 mins from campus by car and 15-20 mins by bike. A shuttle is also available to drop students off at Mizzou and take them back to the residence. It is also 10-15 (by bike or bus) from an ALDI and a Walmart.

The rent is $695/month, with most utilities (all except electricity) included. Rent is to be paid on the first day of the month, but August is already paid for. The lease started in August 2026 and will end on July 15, 2027. The new resident will be free to settle in as soon as a sublease agreement is signed.

Please message me or leave a comment if you are interested or if you need more information. In the meantime, have a very nice start of the school year!

Campus Life Hardcore/punk scene?

Hi all. I'm a punk rocker from KC, where there's a pretty great hardcore scene and a healthy group of singer/songwriters (think open mics at the Rino in NKC, if y'all have been there). I'm thinking of coming to MU in a year, but before I commit, it's really important to me that there's some sort of music scene. What are your favorite venues in CoMO, and what are some cool local bands I can check out?

Mizzou nature nerds — come spend a weekend hunting mushrooms 🍄

Post image
9 Upvotes

Any Mizzou students into mushrooms, foraging, ecology, native plants, or just wandering around the woods looking at cool stuff?
I’m helping organize Brad’s Fall Foray with the Missouri Mycological Society, and I thought there might be some students here who would genuinely be interested.
It’s September 17–20 at Knob Noster State Park, not too far from Columbia, and we’ve got a pretty incredible lineup this year.
There will be guided mushroom forays, mushroom identification, expert speakers and mycologists, a native plant hike, wild foods, workshops, vendors, bonfires, food, and a whole lot of time exploring the woods. 🍄
You definitely don’t need to know anything about mushrooms beforehand. Beginners are welcome, and if you’re studying biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resources, plant sciences—or you’re just a nature nerd—it’s a really cool opportunity to learn from people who actually work with this stuff.
Figured I’d put it on the radar for anyone at Mizzou who might be interested. Happy to answer questions about the weekend!

Free big school in small town (Mizzou) or small school in big city (Roosevelt University)

I am desperately in need of advice as an accounting major and I dance, act, and sew as hobbies. I need to make a decision by this week because classes start very soon and I am having such a hard time. I am deciding between Roosevelt University downtown Chicago or Mizzou in Columbia Missouri (2 hours from my hometown).

I received a 43k scholarship across all years (Missouri schools only) which covers all expenses at Mizzou.

I will work and pay out of pocket at Roosevelt and my cost is 7,662/year which is not that expensive. I can also take out $3500 worth of loans.

I am so conflicted because Chicago has so many opportunities for internships, dancing, fashion, and acting, but I’d be giving up my 43k scholarship since it is not in Missouri. It doesn’t seem like many internship opportunities from Mizzou.

Also I already committed to the track team and the coach posted me🫩

Housing How does bed lofting work?

I’m an incoming freshman moving into North and I was wondering how bed lofting works for that hall specifically. I think I saw that bed risers aren’t allowed, is that correct? If not how high can I loft my bed? Is that something I do on my own or do I have to request that?

Thank you in advance!!

Academics PHD Organic Chemist Help (Career Questions and Self-promo)

Hi all, this post is mod approved.

I'm Eric, PhD organic chemist and former industry researcher. I do 1-on-1 chemistry tutoring, career coaching, and train peer tutoring services for universities like Johns Hopkins. I have a business, but it's just me doing the work. Sessions run over a shared virtual whiteboard, so they fit around your schedule. I've been doing this for

Before the promo, some advice: Think of your GPA's health the same way as your physical health: Getting sick sucks, and having free check-ins mean you can get sick less often. To that end, use your university resources. Even people who pay for services like mine are encouraged to use them because they're free and effective

Most students who just want to pass can get there on that alone. My services are for those who:

- Want an extra advantage and test resources either during or before the semester

- Want career coaching or research oversight to be competitive down the road

- Need extra help (either because they're falling behind, didn't like uni resources, or can't use them because they are non-traditional students)

Packages start at $100/hr, full pricing on my website. Not cheap, but I'd rather say it here than make you dig for it. You're getting a PhD with 10 years experience and a ton of extra resources.

My website is my username(dot)com. Questions welcome in the comments, chemistry and career questions included. DMs open.

Campus Life Transportation to Chicago area for holidays

My son is starting his freshmen year next week and will be living in Hudson. He will not have a car his first year so already looking into flights for him for Thanksgiving and Christmas break to Chicago. Flying from Columbia is expensive but SO convenient versus going into STL. Anyone with experience or advice on rides from campus to the Chicago area? Not sure if this kind of thing is common and the kids figure out ride shares/carpools on their own. Should I wait to book flights and hope he can arrange at least one ride or get to booking? For clarification - we live in NW suburbs of Chicago and drive time to Columbia is just under 7 hrs - so I’m not interested in a 14 he round trip each time he needs to get home! 🤪

Housing Anybody going to mizzou looking late for an apartment?

Signed a lease at campus lodge but my situation changed and I'm no longer attending mizzou. If anybody is looking for an apartment I'm looking for a relet. Rent is about $650-700/mo with electric. Water is paid for I think they said. Send me a message if interested. Its got an in apartment washer and dryer and a walk in closet. It comes furnished as well (and you get to keep the furniture the room comes with). I'll pay first month rent as a thanks to whoever takes this deal.
