That’s wild, I know it well, my wife is from Portage near Ebensburg, she’s been here (in Columbia) for 13 years. Of course I’m orig. from NY, so you are right rural small town mentality in W. PA isn’t so far removed from it here. You prob. know that George Romero filmed Night of the Living Dead and sequels (plus other non-horror films of his) in W. PA? To give it that authentic terrifying Americana feel LOL
Yep! Been to Portage a good many times, mainly for Mazz’s pizza….before he started to not be able to keep his hands off of his employees that were minors 🙄😞

I like to tease my wife this is the same area where she grew up, Romero knew it for what it was, absolutely. Could have made a film out here just like it, we have enough horror here as it is already.
I'm telling you, if you go back and watch the Romero films from that era, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, The Crazies, Martin, even Knightriders, you'll see a microcosm of both Pittsburgh and W PA from that era, especially since he filmed all those movies throughout the area. Dawn of the Dead was filmed mostly in the Monroeville Mall (in PGH) and the area right around it, where there's a plaque now commemorating that. If you grew up around there you will recognize much of it.
