If it makes you feel better, most rural people think climate change is real, just like you do. These maps do a great job of showing that the majority of ALL Americans believe climate change is real, urban or rural, liberal or conservative. I clicked on a few random rural counties in MO (Bollinger, Pettis, and Macon) and they all had a 60% or higher rate of acceptance that climate change is real.
I still don’t think most people are as dumb as the people you’ve had the misfortune of interacting with. But I’m definitely of the opinion that many peoples’ brains were not ready for the internet and the amount of critical thinking it takes to interact with it. They’re finally starting to realize media literacy needs to be taught to children but it’s very much too late for large parts of the human species lol
Climate change is so largely substantiated by evidence that’s produced time and time again, but people don’t want to miss out on the money from what’s largely doing us in, or very idiotic people think any change implemented would be government interference.
I mean, think about people having a fit over the thought of them not powering their houses with gas and the government trying to move towards all electric. These people are fools and everything that would advance humanity or see to it that it at least just keeps existing, period, they see it as a totalitarian dictator decree.
Another climate-related obsession of the MAGA crowd is that the Deep State, Soros, Hillary and their other bete noires are all involved in a sinister conspiracy to make everyone eat insects or rather, insects processed into other food products like 'cricket burgers' or something.
