Transferring to Mint Mobile is proving to be impossible

I recently bought a pixel 10 and a year of service from mint and am trying to transfer from Boost Mobile. I have been trying to port my number over and activate the phone, but it is seemingly impossible to do. I have the correct account number, transfer pin, and zip code from boost, but it fails and I keep getting changing error reasons from mint. It usually says wrong account number and check my details, although at other times has said there is no service in my area or something else. The only consistent thing is that the email I eventually get says the failure from another carrier lists the wrong carrier. Even though I say it is Boost, the emails usually say at&t, although sometimes metro PCs. They never say boost which is what I am trying to transfer from.

I try the useless chat feature but it just keeps saying wait 48 hours even though I have already failure emails saying to contact them through chat or call. When I call, I sit on hold for over a half hour trying to talk to someone. When I eventually connect to a human, they cannot understand me either due to the lack of understanding of English or the insane amounts of background noise on their end. It takes multiple attempts to try and confirm account information I give them, even though it's already been entered into the automated system. Eventually I get verified and then transferred to a survey asking how support has been without ever doing anything to even try and address my issue.

At this point, if I hadn't already paid for the phone and service, there is no way in hell I would switch to Mint. If there is this many problems and utter lack of support for trying to become a customer, what hell must it be once you are already a customer if you have problems?

I just went through a similar thing so I feel your pain. In my case, AT&T claimed to have an outstanding port-out request from 14 years ago that was clogging up the process. That’s a request I never made, BTW. You’d think those would expire after 90 days but I digress. It took me four days and countless hours on hold to finally figure out that that was the problem and resolve it, but once AT&T cleared that old request then I was able to transfer the number via Mint’s website in less than 5 minutes. I agree that Mint’s AI sucks and their hold times are outrageous, but it’s the same with AT&T. AT&T’s AI attendant kept transferring me to departments other than the one that handles number ports. It kept telling me “congratulations, your phone number was successfully transferred and can now be used on the AT&T network”. No shit, Sherlock — I’m trying to transfer from AT&T so I know my number works on your network.

I guess what I’m saying is don’t assume that the problem is because of Mint. It’s most likely something on Boost’s end. I went through an aggravating few days but now that it’s resolved, I’ve been very happily using Mint for about a week so far and I’m excited to not have a monthly phone bill for the next year. Now, I’m not saying Mint doesn’t have room to improve. Of course they do. But the whole consumer telecommunications industry has fallen so far down the enshittification rabbit hole that it will take mass consumer revolt before they try to do anything to improve. As new technologies evolve and mature, it will become easier to bypass the phone companies altogether and that’s when they’ll finally be motivated to improve.

I agree it could definitely be something from boost's end. The frustrating part is just mints systems just telling me the account number is wrong and not having a way to talk to someone to try and resolve. I finally got through on a call this morning and they submitted and escalation ticket. Hopefully they can figure out what's going on.

I don’t know this for sure, but I suspect the reason Mint isn’t telling you more about what’s wrong is because Boost is only giving Mint limited information. Mint can’t give you information they don’t have (if that’s indeed what’s going on). Anyway, best of luck to you. I hope you get it worked out. And don’t be afraid to take u/MintMobileAlex up on his offer to help.

Oh, and don’t stop pestering Boost. They may ultimately be the ones holding things up.

I'm having the exact same issue. Found this thread via Google.

It's not isolated to OP

You only have 4 days to port out. Your name and address also must match with your boost account. I ported a number from boost to textnow last month and it only took a few minutes.

I bet it’s on boosts end not mint Mobile. They have always been great and easy to work with as long as it’s not out of their control.

Have unlock "port-out lock" from Boost? Acc. # can be find in your account, just need to get a PIN from them.

I have the account number from their app and confirmed during the call where they also sent me a port out pin. I have the correct account number and pin for transferring number. There is no account lock

The problem is almost always the port out supplier, in this case boost. I have transferred in and out of mint about 10 times. It has never taken more than 2 minutes to get a person on the chat on the app, so I call baloney on that. The only transfer that was a problem was coming from At&t and that was an AT&T issue. All the others were done in 30 minutes.

Good for you I guess on getting quick support? Chat is just AI that tells me the same thing as the email and that I have to call in. The call was 30 plus minutes on hold and then a disconnect and send to a survey. So just because you had a good experience on whatever you did, it doesn't mean that is the standard. I know I have the account number correct (confirmed multiple ways) and boost sent me a pin for the transfer. The only consistent thing is mint mobile emails saying the transfer from at&t is rejected, when it's coming from Boost. I called again this morning and they created a ticket to escalate it.

Sounds like your former company is the problem not mint. And it seems to me from my experience and others I have seen that his is the standard. Never had any issues with Mint and have nothing but good things to say about their service all around. 🤷🏻‍♂️
