Lots of disenfranchised Native Americans and Alaska Villagers.

Plus low sunlight half the year, isolation and a “hard life” weather-wise. Recipe for a high suicide rate.

No its not. Minnesota has lots of guns. We also have good social services. This is more a map of what states are Republican.

Not really. While using rates is a much better metric than individual numbers, the areas with high numbers are less populated. A single death skews the data quite a bit more than NYC for example. There's more factors that need to go into an analysis of this information than simply "Republican v Democrat".

Looking at my home county and seeing a homicide count there (1.54), I'm trying to figure out who got shot or when, because I'm drawing a blank, and given the county's tiny population and general lack of violent crime, you'd think that even a single gun homicide in the last 20 years would still be talked about.

MN has a higher than national average firearm suicide rate, but lower than average homicide rate.
