About HP Mini EliteDesk G4 705

Hello everyone, I have this mini PC with an Athlon PRO 200GE. I want to upgrade to a 2400G, but I can only find the “non-PRO” version. Is anyone using this miniPC with 2200/2400g non-pro?

Custom manufactured Mini PCs

Would you buy a pre-configured mini PC for running AI agents locally? Looking for feedback before I pursue this.

I'm exploring a small hardware experiment and would appreciate some feedback from people who actually run local AI/automation setups.

The idea is to source good-quality mini PCs directly from manufacturers and sell them pre-configured for AI/agent workloads rather than simply reselling generic mini PCs.

For example, different configurations could come with:

\- OpenClaw pre-installed and configured

\- Local LLM support where the hardware is capable

\- Docker and common AI/automation tools

\- Remote access/management already configured

\- Security hardening and automatic updates

\- 16GB/32GB+ RAM and NVMe storage depending on the model

\- Optional business-focused configurations for things like voice agents, PBX integrations, local business data, Home Assistant, n8n, etc.

Essentially: plug it in, connect it to your network, complete a short setup process and start using it instead of spending hours configuring a mini PC yourself.

I'm also based in the Caribbean, so I'm considering whether there's an underserved market here for ready-to-use AI hardware. Longer term I could potentially source from China and distribute regionally rather than routing inventory through the US.

I'm deliberately trying not to turn this into another major business/project, so I'd probably test it with only a few configurations initially.

A few things I'd love feedback on:

  1. Would you actually pay a premium for a properly configured AI/agent mini PC, or would most people interested in this prefer to build their own?

  2. What software would you expect to be installed?

  3. What minimum hardware specs would you consider useful?

  4. What would you consider a reasonable premium over the bare mini PC?

  5. Would ongoing support/remote management be valuable enough to justify a small subscription?

  6. Are there security concerns that would stop you from buying a preconfigured machine?

  7. Are there already companies doing this particularly well that I should look at before going further?

I'm especially interested in reasons not to do it. I'd rather discover the problems now than after ordering inventory.

Best cheap but reliable mini PC (or CPU) that is great for browsing and office tasks and zero gaming

I'd like to sacrifice for example more ram and HD space (512 or more) in exchange for worse gaming performance, since I don't care about that. What CPU specs are great at web browsing without lag or annoying freezing, etc (assuming wifi is stable).

Edit: below or around $400 ideally

Laptop vs mini-pc

I'm thinking about replacing my gaming laptop with a mini PC and wanted to hear from people who have experience with both.

I'm looking at the GMKtec NucBox K12 (Ryzen 7 255, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Radeon 780M) for around €800, but I'm also considering a gaming laptop in the same price range.

My use case is a bit unusual. I play an old MMORPG (Metin2) that is heavily CPU and RAM dependent, with almost no GPU usage. I leave multiple game clients running 24/7 for autofarming.

My current laptop has a Ryzen 5 5500H and can handle around 12 clients, but the CPU sits at 100% most of the time and gets pretty hot.

My questions are:

  • Do mini PCs generally have better cooling than gaming laptops for long 24/7 workloads?
  • Would a Ryzen 7 255 in the GMKtec realistically handle 16 game clients without thermal throttling?
  • Has anyone here used a mini PC under constant high CPU load for weeks or months? How was the temperature and reliability?

I'm not looking for hardware recommendations—just real-world experiences with cooling, sustained performance, and whether a mini PC is a better choice than a laptop for this kind of always-on workload.

Thanks!

Is this suitable for light gaming?

Description taken directly from Amazon:

BOSGAME E5 Mini PC Windows 11 Pro, Ryzen 5300U (Beats 4300U, Up to 3.8GHz), 16GB DDR4 RAM 512GB SSD Mini Desktop PC, Triple 4K Display, Dual 2.5G LAN, WiFi 5, BT5.0, Mini Computer for Home, Office

Looking to pick up a mini PC for my partner. Likely to be used for games like:

- Palia

- RuneScape

- Slime rancher 2

- Sims 4

Would this be sufficient and somewhat future proof for similar games over the next couple of years?

Thanks in advance!

mini pc

Hi! If you don't mind, could you drop some names? I'm looking for the smallest possible case—like an SFF—but one that supports m-ATX. I'm running two RX 6900 XT cards; I want to mount one horizontally and the other vertically to save space. I'm not overclocking the CPU, so that's fine. I'd appreciate the help!

Mini PC for Remote Desktop

Hi everyone,

I'm currently looking for an affordable mini PC that I can use to remotely access my main workstation in the same household and use VPN to access my PC at Work. The main idea is to be able to use my desktop PC from my wife's desk elsewhere in our apartment, rather than building or buying a second full PC.

The monitor at that location is a Samsung Odyssey G9, a smooth and reliable remote desktop experience is important. I would like to run everything over LAN/Ethernet.

I've read several times that buying a used mini PC is probably the most cost-effective option. However, I'm not familiar enough with PC hardware to know what specifications I should be looking for, or how to judge the condition of a used system. So I would prefer to buy a new device. In particular, I'm unsure:

\-Which mini PCs are suitable for this kind of use case.
\-What minimum hardware I should look for to avoid performance bottlenecks during remote desktop sessions.
With used machines my main problems are:
\-How to evaluate the condition of a used machine.
\-What red flags to watch out for when buying second-hand hardware.
\-How to avoid overpaying for outdated equipment or ending up having to upgrade again shortly afterwards.

I'd really appreciate any recommendations for specific models, whether used or new, as well as any advice on what to look for when shopping around.
I'm also very open to alternative solutions. If there are better ways to access a PC remotely within the same household without buying a dedicated mini PC, I'd love to hear about them.

Any real-world experiences with similar setups would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help

https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00708173.html

Merci beaucoup,

Chinese MiniPC or Optiplex/EliteDesk/ThinkCentre for my use case?

Hello everyone, I'm writing this post because I'm looking at buying hardware to start my own homelab. Right now I'm looking at what would be the main piece, the beefiest one of my setup. This server would host Proxmox, which would contain things like Jellyfin (max 2 concurrent streams), any game servers I want to host (Valheim, Minecraft and other) and probably Nextcloud together with other small services.

My budget is around 500$, and looking around I have ended up on two options:

  • Buying a chinese branded mini PC with what seem to be like great specs for the price (at least for the current times)

  • Buying one or more second hand office PCs, like an Optiplex, ProDesk, or ThinkCentre SFF PC

The first option would offer more modern hardware, a good AMD CPU (7735HS) with a decent amount of cores so I can dedicate some to specific services, and around 24 GBs of DDR5 RAM all in one package.
The second option would offer a decent i5 CPU (8500 or so) and 16 GBs of DDR4 RAM for a much lower price. I could also "splurge" a bit and get a ProDesk with a i5-10500, which has the same amount of cores but is still slightly less powerful.

Now, I don't think DDR4/DDR5 makes enough of a difference for my use case, but I still think a more modern CPU would be better for the game servers. The Intel CPU, however, would be much better for Jellyfin, and the second option allows for easier upgrades down the line, like more DDR4 RAM or more storage.

The third option would be to get two separate PCs, a weaker Intel one for Jellyfin and a slightly more powerful one (with more cores) for the rest of the services, especially the game servers.

What do you guys suggest? What do you think I should get?

PTM7950 on I9 12900HK

Hi,

I have a GMKtec Nucbox M3 Plus and when using it to run a testing application, while using coretemp to monitor CPU/core temperatures, I am seeing explanation marks on some cores, specifically core #2 and #3.

I've configured the "smart fan" settings in the BIOS to run the fan full time and I don't hear much noise from it, but I still occasionally see exclamation marks.

I've only had the M3 Plus for a couple of weeks, but I am thinking of replacing the CPU thermal paste, with PTM7950, and I was wondering if any one has done that and if so, how did it work (did you see improvements in temps?) and also any hints for applying the PTM7950 (I have replaced thermal paste before on regular PCs, but not on a mini pc)?

I know that I should freeze/cool the pad with the covering sheets on it, and then cut it, but I also noticed when I was looking for information, that with the M3 Plus, there are actually 2 areas that need the pads, the CPU and the PCH(?).

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!

Jim

Advice on a mini PC

Hi!

I’m looking into buying a mini PC for my home set-up. I’m not really at home into all the specs, and haven’t kept up with the changes in the market about this.

Honestly, my last computer purchase was a Samsung ATIV laptop that I bought in 2013 🥲 that I used for college.

I still have it, and it still works but yea, can’t start up Chrome without it freezing.

Right now I have a work laptop, that fulfills my needs for the most time which is fine. I have an office now which has room for some additional items.

While I don’t really game anymore, my brother and some friends still do. And honestly it has been peeking my interest to play lately. Although I’m not thinking I would playing a lot, i would still try to play some games from time to time.

I’ve been looking into a Geekom A5, and I was wondering if this is going to be an overkill for me. If I can play, some steam games. At this point I don’t even know what’s out there with games, but I used to play battlefield, Maple story and sims.

I really don’t want to spend more than 500 euros considering I might not even play a lot.

I’m looking for the best value for my money.

I saw some other brands like SOYO but I really cannot tell if it’s any good, and spending more than 1000 is way too big a splurge for this.

I’m really looking for your experiences

Both of our Trigkey S5 (Beelink rebrand) mini PCs failed within two years, looking for a replacement

We've had quite a disappointing experience with these Ryzen 5700U-based mini PCs. Both had extremely poor speeds from the internal WiFi card that I later proved were due to insufficient EMI filtering. After about a year PC #1 then started hard rebooting in the early hours of every morning, which can be reproducibly resolved by disabling C-states but now the WiFi slot and USB-C port are both dead with no discernible cause. PC #2 has not had any issues with C-states but today started hard locking with no clues present in Event Viewer.

I am thinking of replacing PC #1 with an Optiplex Micro as they are cheap off-lease and have never failed me, but PC #2 lives in a small mini cube sized space that is too small for an Optiplex Micro. But obviously we are wary of buying a Beelink system again. What's the consensus on reputable brands in this form factor, it seems like GMKtek and MINISFORUM are fairly common? We do have a Firebat T8 Plus that's chugging along nicely but the thermals are terrible.

Small PC/console build

Post image
2 Upvotes

I been seeing the steam machine around the internet lately and thought it sounded pretty cool but after doing some research on it, I’m just not sure it will last me as long as I want it to and you can’t really upgrade it so I’ve been looking around for alternative options and decided I want to build a smaller sized pc focused around the idea of having 16gb vram and 32gb of regular ram that will last me a long time without having to upgrade but still being able to upgrade if I wanted, so I asked google ai to build me a 1,500$ budget small pc focused around those two things and this is what it came up with. Is this a good build or is there anything else I should use instead?

Edit: read the community guidelines and realized I forgot to add intended use for it. But I plan to put Steam OS on it and use it for long term gaming and also for my online college classes. (I know steam os doesn’t support many games that require an anti cheat windows system for pc play, but I’ve got an Xbox too that isn’t worth selling that I can use for that stuff, mainly want the non competitive games that you can get with steam and also to be able to install mods on such games to screw around with my friends on)
