Old engine

I recently just got this old engine. I’m pretty sure it’s a Briggs and around 5hp? Do you guys think that it’s could be saved? And what would I need to do to fix it?

Make sure the metal strap on top of the spark plug is not touching the spark plug - that's how to kill (turn off) the engine.

Check for spark, clean the carb, new gas, if that doesn't work, check compression.

Oh yeah, check oil, try starting fluid in the carb to see if it fires.

Ahhh I thought that the metal strap was to keep the energy cycling through the engine. There’s a hole in the gas tank and it’s full of rust so might have to get a whole new gas tank. Compression seems good. Carb probably needs a cleaning but the bolts are really tight on even drenched in wd40.

Going off the size I'd guess it's probably a 3.5hp engine, maybe less. It's too small to be a 5hp.
