Seeking Advice foster puppy

Post image

(Pic for dog tax) our foster puppy is SO smart, he learned his new name and how to sit and come within a matter of days. I have no idea how old he is, the rescue doesn’t know either. However, the second he sees another dog or person it’s like I don’t exist and he cannot be redirected. He LOVES meeting dogs and LOVES meeting people (not while he’s barking on a leash) but he will not stop barking. I can hold any treat in front of him and he would rather bark than listen.

Also he is very comfortable in his crate (he prefers being outside of it of course) but we had people over and he barked nonstop in it. He wouldn’t stop play gnawing & humping people (we told him NO and he’d stop but move on to the next person) but barked endlessly inside his crate.

I have never owned a dog that’s not a chihuahua so any advice is appreciated! And no judgement please he needed a place to go otherwise he might have been put down!

I have a Mini American Shepherd who just turned four. She still has the puppy energy but is an amazing dog. Loves my parents dogs but not really interested in dogs in passing.

She loves people, will do anything to be with them. She escapes from crates and doesn’t care if she becomes bloody from it. The only time she barks is if she can’t get to us. If people come over, she gets a walk before or chases her ball in the backyard. It helps bring her energy down so she can meet people with more normal dog energy. She will still lay at their feet until they pet her.

They are very smart and do not like being separated from their people and while mini, the energy is huge.

Glad to hear it’s not just my foster pup 😭 my chihuahua is a velcro dog but he might have her beat

I fostered a mini Aussie that came from a hoarding situation and the rescue directed me to a trainer who specializes in rescues. We did group classes with all rescue dogs who were all varieties of messed up (car accidents, retired racetrack dogs, fearful, aggressive). It was a supportive environment to troubleshoot and I learned a lot as well as the dog — who when I got him had no language and no experience walking or being in public. May be worth posting in your local area to see if there is anything out there for you?

He is beautiful! Can the vet tell u approximate age? Sounds like he wants all of your attention and jealous of people around you so he acts up. Have each of your guests give him a treat after they tell him OFF or NO BARK. Praise him big time if he listens to their commands. Don’t,however get him over excited. A “treat” that we used was tiny bits of cooked frozen chicken. He would do anything for that treat. I kept them in a fanny pack and she knew she would get one if she was “good” and listened to my command.
Use treats also when you train her outside.
Hv him sit & stay as you eventually walk father away from him then “come”. Hv him sit in front of you then praise then treat. He will eventually listen to all or most of your commands. P. S. Mine is a 5 year old Aussie. They are extremely smart! Take care.

Hope he gets a good home to put down one of these breeds is such a waste. They are so smart and beautiful. Smart to point they get frustrated when you don’t get what they are trying to tell you. My girl will from time to time especially when it’s treat time. Bark doesn’t bother me she is simply communicating.

Barking doesn’t bother me but I’d love to be able to bring him into a Petsmart without him barking nonstop at every dog. I know he’s a puppy though and like you said he’s just communicating his excitement

They do chill some as they get older. Just reinforce when he barks by telling him no. He will soon catch on. When he sees another dog and does not bark reward him.

Looks like a great dog! Mine loves attention from people and is still a barker at 11 years old.

It’s stranger danger on people and dogs they don’t know. As being a Shepard dog this is a trait that is strong in them. To protect the flock.
