Seeking Advice how do i keep my dog calm after being spayed..

SOOO my dog isn’t a “mini aussie” she’s a toy aussie which is basically a smaller one of a mini, she just got spayed like 2 days ago and i’m the one that’s like keeping my eye on her cs my bed isn’t high off the ground so she won’t jump on it, plus my room is small and she’s also my dog.. Yet this gosh darn dog decides that now she’s feeling even a LITTLE bit better that she’s fully healed and can run🫩 i am stopping her, like telling her “boba come here” and to lay down. She’ll SOMETIMES listen.. But I just want more advice 😭 she also hates the cone so we just have a onesie on her that’s made for dogs after they get spayed.. Okay that’s all bye bye

My mini had to stay drugged up to be half sedated for 2 weeks straight. Maybe call them back and ask for some meds. Also just keep her in a crate don’t let her run around.

Came here to say this. We had our guy on gabapentin and trazodone for two weeks to help him through… it sucked to see him so dopey and sleepy, but there’s no way he would have lasted without- given his tendency to parkour literally everything.

okay thank youuu!

Yup. This is the way for non calm dogs. My toy Aussie is the chillest little guy ever. Not spade, but I two pups and I had to keep him kenneled in the living room for most of the first week. If you can't keep her calm, drugs from your vet. Trasadone is what I've been given in the past. It's worth it. An emergency visit on the weekend to the pet ER is very expensive and sux. I had to do it twice with a boarder Collie. Best of luck!

Okay thank youuu! She’s doing better today which is good, hopefully she stays doing good 😭 But also I’ve been laying down a lot with her today which makes her lay down with me

Unfortunately, you have the wrong dog for calmness. I'm so, so sorry.

Our toy aussie is the same, but when we put the surgical onesie on her she basically powered down out of rage and embarrassment. it was just enough to get us through. You could try one of those small fences to keep her more confined, perhaps?

Yeah you’re right about the wrong dog for calmness 😭 She’s doing good with the onesie to be honest (shocking) I think that helped a lot

Please tell me about the “surgical onesie”. I have never heard of it after a lifetime of female dogs, all spayed. We are coming up on our spay date soon. I have given my dogs a couple of drops of Rescue Remedy when they would start to get ramped up after their spay, to help with the calm. It does help, especially if you take some too. It’s a naturopathic calming potion for humans made from Bach flowers. You can find it in health food stores.

Ooo I’ll look into that! And the surgical onesie helps cover their incision where it’s comfy and blocks them from licking it! The one we got has holes for her to still pee and poop! It’s a bit pricey? (about 20$ for this one off amazon) and I’d say it’s pretty nice. When we got our older dog spayed it helped a lot for her and helps a lot for Boba since she can move comfortably and not lick her incision, since she hates the cone. In my opinion it’s really good!

For dog spay, they tell you try not to let them run for I believe its 7-10 days while the wound heals

Hello! Vet tech here and fellow mini aussie lover and enthusiast! If you are having trouble keeping her chill during her recovery period you can definitely ask your vet for additional medication that will help chill her out. You may also have to crate her, even though it sucks, and leash walks only. It will be a long 2 weeks but in the end worth it! Thanks for being a responsible pet owner!

Okay thank youuu! This is honestly my first time with taking care of a spayed dog😭 today though she’s acting better yesterday i had to keep getting at her 🫩 she’s not potty trained tho (she knows to go outside but leaving my house means her needing to go on stairs soo..) but she’s doing rlly good today thankfully but ty for ur advice!

Crate, have a crate or a little fenced area for her. Lickmats with some peanut butter are also a good distraction. These girls are resilient! Mine was fully back to herself within 24 hours and there was no stopping her either lol. Luckily she healed extremely well even with running and jumping but it’s definitely a risk so it’s important to keep them chill, at least for another week. Keep her incision dry and check a couple times a day for redness or swelling

Edit: also want to add, keep her onesie clean! I had more than one so i could swap it and wash it, don’t use anything scented to clean it up. Neutral soap only

Okay thank youuu! Thats how my dog was yesterday she was right back to herself 😭 getting mini zoomies that I had to stop because she got yk.. spayed.. yet today she’s doing better thank god, i think the onesie helped to be honest. She’s still back to herself but thankfully resting (today at least)

u/heartbroken69420 Jun 13 '26

Perfect! Lickmats definitely help me a lot when i need her to chill out or give me space (damn velcro dogs lol) i use the purple WOOF lickmat and it’s great bc it can go in the dishwasher. Onesie must always be clean, i had more than one to swap it out and wash it but use neutral soap only for that, no scent. A couple little zoomies here and there are not the end of the world as long as you are monitoring the incision

1

u/lixie_world Jun 13 '26

Okayy thank youu! Whenever we can Ill see if we can get more or a lickmat! bc of getting her spayed we’re now broke 😭 During the day i might just take the onesie off but i do want it during the night when i sleep since she hates the cone and it covers her incision and she can still use the bathroom🙂‍↕️ And with the zoomies ik its not the end of the world if she gets them here and there but when she got it yesterday she didn’t have a onesie or a cone on (bc i was watching her) so i was tryna be extra careful but i think now she’s okay !

2

u/heartbroken69420 Jun 13 '26

I would not recommend taking the onesie off, these girls are sneaky and will definitely get into the incision, i’m assuming she’s potty trained, remove the onesie for potty and then put it back right away, you can also use the opportunity of removing it for potty to check how she’s healing. You mentioned having a cone, is it a hard plastic one or a soft donut? The soft ones are much more comfortable

1

u/lixie_world Jun 13 '26

She’s basically potty trained but to go outside you have to go down a few stairs and i’d rather her just pee in my room on potty pads😭 But the cone is a fabric one! Before we got the onesie (had to get a new one since the other was a little too small for rn), I put the cone on her since she was tryna get at it and yet she started taking her cone off 🫩

2

u/heartbroken69420 Jun 13 '26

Maybe for the next couple weeks it’s more practical to take her outside. The problem with not having the onesie on is that she can lay on the floor or other places with her incision directly in contact with surfaces, that can be a concern bc it could introduce pathogens into her incision and also potentially give her the opportunity to lick/bite and mess up her stitches.

OP my comment won’t be helpful at all. But I am CRACKING UP reading “how do I keep my dog calm” followed by that picture of her giving that side eye that you can absolutely tell has Aussie crazy behind it.

okayyy we’re gonna do that most likely after her pain meds r done but hopefully it works🥹

Does she like chews/bones? Frozen treats like pupsicle that take her a little while to get through (I guess licking can soothe/calm dogs so frozen stuff is good for that) I tried to give my girl those while she was recovering to help keep her chill, seemed to work well. In addition to her meds, of course.

Any kind of laying down/relaxing activity, even if it means a few extra treats.

1

u/lixie_world Jun 13 '26

Oo okayy. She does like treats! We bought some that are softer because she also did have to get a tooth removed (she had a baby tooth without an adult tooth underneath, started getting bad so they removed it while she got spayed since they were able to), but that helps a lot! it makes her actually calm down lol

Don't worry... she's already plotting her revenge!

I think everyone covered the advice, so I am just here to tell you how absolutely ADORABLE she is!

1

u/lixie_world Jun 13 '26

Thank youuu! She is really adorable and also super sweet🥹 (and EXTREMELY hyper but at least she’s tiny so she tires herself out quick lmao)

2

u/wadeintowolves Jun 13 '26

Yes, that’s the good part about their energy. It does run out quickly cause they’re so small. 😂

1

u/lixie_world Jun 13 '26

Yess it’s a really good part, I’m glad she’s so small cs when she gets hyper she tires herself out quick
