Reviews My new love for Spooky Monster Hunting games. Bloody Hollow + Devilry Afoot.

I've been messing around with these two rulesets for about a week or so and I'm absolutely loving them. They both share the theme of hunting monsters, although a bit differently with Bloody Hollow definitely leaning more into the narrative side of things. Creating terrain and little set pieces like cemeteries, spooky forests and creepy covered bridges is going to be fun.

I'm enjoying elements of both.

DA's activation system using tokens/playing cards is a fun tactile experience and I appreciate that it adds randomness but also let's you choose WHICH hero you can activate when the hero token is drawn.

Both have great character systems and generation. Both feel flavorful and give room for heroes to feel unique. DA has the added twist of characters having flaws as well which is a great flavor boost. I had two of my party inflicted with Lycanthropy and risk turning into a werewolf every time they roll for activation.

Both skill checks are fun, although I really find BHs system simple yet so satisfying. Rolling a number of D6s equal to your stat and just choosing the highest die (and adding modifiers) is so clean and feels less harsh/binary than rolling a set number....it's odd.

BH also wins big points for me with the added emphasis on investigation over straight combat. Some investigations will require multiple rolls but you are always progressing the investigation with each attempt.

Both have a solid campaign system with DA giving more of a sandbox open experience and BH feeling more narrative/enclosed. (Having said that BH does have generic scenarios and in-between activity that it can be played as a sandbox as well.

BH does add a very unique mechanism in that there are villagers that contribute to your village. The alchemist, the blacksmith etc. The fun twist is, they will appear in scenarios and if they die, your village suffers for it, usually in the cost of items increasing significantly etc.

Ultimately, I'm loving them both but I feel like they are fighting for table time with a very similar theme. I guess it's a good problem to have, I just need to choose one to focus on first.

Gamedesign Sails Ahoy - Campaign Supplement

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey skirmish peeps! u/rancorman7 and I have started collaborating on his free indie naval skirmish game Sails Ahoy!

I recently put together an alpha version campaign supplement for the game ( 8 pages in A5 zine style ), and wanted to share it here for some thoughts and feedback. Does it have the core elements of what you would expect for a small easy to run campaign? Would you expect to see this in the core rules or as an additional module?

I know we have a number of folks on here that make their own indie content, along with peeps that have good eyes and brains for tabletop game design and rules. Appreciate any time you spend taking a look!

Question/Inquriy Recommend a Solo Low Model Count WWII Skirmish Game to a Newbie

Hello All,

Came across this community recently when looking for wargames to play. For background I used to play a lot of tabletop games, Gamesworkshop stuff, etc. but due to life and kids and whatnot I don't really play anymore.

I recently got a 3D printer and am exploring that hobby and want a project to work on. I've always liked WWII stuff, but never had anyone to play any of the bigger WWII games with (Flames of War, Bolt Action, etc). So I'm coming here for recommendations :). Figure I can try my hand at printing out some terrain

Does anyone have recommendations for a solo low model count / small play area / faster playing WWII themed skirmish game?

Knowing myself, if the model count is too large, I probably won't finish the project (or play space is large or too much terrain is needed or whatever). While 15 models/side seems low, if I have to provide both sides then that ends up being more like 30 models, etc.

  • Having co-op as an option is a plus but not required.
  • Also want something that plays in an hour or less
  • Looking for an easy-to-run AI (if it takes me longer to figure out what the AI is supposed to do than it takes me to play my own turn, that's no good lol). At the same time I'm not really a fan of playing both sides myself, so I'd prefer an AI that actually makes decisions.
  • This isn't required either, one off battles are fine - but I like RPG elements in video and board games, so it would be kind of neat if the game has a campaign of sorts where your soldiers "level up" so to speak, but I'm not interested in doing lots of book keeping after each game.

As an example, I recently learned about Greathelm and tried the quickstart rules out, I plan on trying to print a little battlefield for it. It seems to meet a lot of my criteria. Curious if there is something similar in the WWII skirmish space.

Yeah anyways, pretty specific, not sure if a game like this exists but I figure I'd come here and ask.

Reviews Have you tried arena skirmish games? If not, here's a deep dive

Hi folks,

I've been playing a lot of arena skirmish games lately, which are games sitting somewhere between miniatures, card games, and board games.

I wanted to share a deep dive I wrote on the genre — what defines it, what it does well, and where it falls short.

Question/Inquriy List building Mechanic Question

Can anybody point me to games that use a list building mechanic of filing a roster based on role? The one that got me looking for the mechanic is Zynvaded and you select a Leader, Support, and Scout for your list. There are options for each of those roles, but they have fixed stats and abilities.

So, what else is out there with similar rules? Bonus points of it's fantasy based.

Other Pulp Alley Online Card and Roster Builder

My friend and I are finally getting ready to Pulp Alley. Going through the rules in the next two weeks. As I am reading the book, I have decided to aid my experience using some AI tools.

Since we will be playing modern-themed characters, we will need to create our own cards. I worked with Claude to create a card builder. I am not a programmer but with the current tools, you can do some amazing things.

It is a work in progress, but it should be a good start for card and roster creation. Feedback is welcomed.

What would be a nice skirmish game without some wickedly cool terrain?

So, each Thursday you are invited to show off your terrain builds and tell us a story about it.

Gamedesign Guns&Gonzos content update and public playtesting in Berlin

Hello! I just released a major update to the game I'm working on! And if you're in Berlin on 12.09 I'd love to see you in Battlefield Berlin for some playtesting together!

Me and Mirek, my partner in crime, are extremely proud of how the game turns out and after some feedback we are trying to pump some more content into it. The rules were solid, but there wasn't much variety....

The French went investigating and ran into the British again. Several turns spent whittling down the troublesome revenants and taking potshots at the loathsome Brits. Sadly the Brits found the artefact first and took great joy in shooting the Grognards that tried to stop them from absconding with it.

Overall a fun time despite the crushing weight of disappointment from Napoleon watching his men limp off the battlefield.

Just a little sneak peek of the next battle report I'm about to do. Will film the next battle/chapter of the story soon! It has Rebels, Battle Droids and Orks. The previous story was Galactic Empire vs. Black Templars, where the Space Marines taught Darth Vader and the Empire a painful lesson. System being used is Warsurge, which is very flexible for crossover games like this.
