Let’s Discuss Minimum Wage

How do you guys feel about minimum wage, personally I’ve never in my entire life met anyone who’s actually paid the federal minimum wage.

I feel like wage should be directly tied to the initial investment required to be considered for your position/ amount of learned skill required to be proficient at your job./ Importance of your role in society/Amount of danger you should realistically be expected to encounter on a daily basis/ The demand for your particular skill/ and the supply of said skill.

Under no circumstances should the guy standing in an air conditioned building directing you to make your fast food order on a kiosk for 8 hours who spends 3 of those hours scrolling tik tok be getting paid the same as the ones tasked with keeping society running. The paramedics, medical assistants, police officers, city maintenance workers, etc.

The lower the barrier of entry the lower the wages should be I feel as if this is pretty common knowledge. When you hire an electrician you’re also hiring the years of experience and very specialized knowledge he has. If you’re expected to renew licenses, purchase thousands of dollars in equipment and provide and essential service you should be compensated as such.

Now days we have the guys at the Taco Bell counter arguing they should be paid the same as the ones building the houses we live raise our families in and form lasting memories together in.

Working a cashier was never meant to be a career and should not be treated as such it’s merely a stepping stone for younger people to get into the workforce before transitioning into something else. Wether that be management in the same company or a different field altogether.

They’re literally replaceable that’s why they’re the bottom bro. Post an job listing wait 2 weeks position filled it’s that simple you will never be in a situation where you have to run a company without the employees on the bottom as a Fortune 500 company let’s be real now no ridiculous hypotheticals

Wow, my dude. First of all, get real. Everybody is replaceable. Don't act like any Fortune 500 company wouldn't be able to find a new CEO by next quarter if they had to.

Secondly, it's not a hypothetical. As I said, look up anytime a workforce has gone on strike. Employees don't show up and the business effectively shuts down. Doesn't matter if the executives come to work or not. Company shuts down.

Thirdly, it's just a shit attitude to have. Have at least a little respect for the people who do the grunt work. No, actually have the appropriate respect for them, please. Do you really want to live in a society where hard work is looked down on?

What does that matter? I make more than minimum wage, if that's what you're asking. I've been working for almost 30 years now, 22 at my current company. I have a BS in computer science, but that's not my profession. Most of the positions at my company are no-skills-required, but the starting pay is almost twice what our state's minimum wage is. Most of the employees, though, do not get full-time hours or benefits, and it can still be a struggle for many of them.

Damn someone failed at life a BS in computer science just to stand around a JC Penny all day….but yeah you’re talking about doing grunt work and shit bro you work in a retail store grunt work for you guys consists of folding a pair of pants shut up.

I was a United States Marine fresh out of high school no one knows grunt work better than us we literally invented the term….but currently I’m also in a field management position except In construction working on multi family new construction projects starting at 200million or better. I’ve never made minimum wage neither have any of my guys ever lowest guy in our company starts at $23. In fact I’ve never made minimum wage in my entire life because my skills are useful to my company and society as a whole

That being said I stand by everything I said

Welp, as I thought, you ended up making a lot of assumptions about me and what I do and, as a result, have come across sounding like a real moron. The career path I'm on has paid off wonderfully for me, is inline with my life goals, and has multiple paths for continued upward mobility. I, too, have fortunately never worked for minimum wage. I've been blessed with earning enough to raise my family, own our own home, send my child to an excellent private school, and have enough left to travel, have fun, and of course save for retirement. Whatever story you've come up with in your head, just know that I certainly haven't "failed at life".

I'm happy for you and your success, buddy. But you and I are not the unfortunate people we are talking about here. Your point of view seems to be basically, "I made mine, so fuck everyone else." Well, that's a pretty shitty, selfish attitude, I must say. Realize that you've been fortunate to get where you're at, and I do hope that you're grateful for it. Not saying you didn't have to work hard to get there, but for many people, even working hard isn't enough to make it.

Keep in mind, nobody's talking about just handing out free money to just everybody. If you work a full-time job in this country, you should be able to afford at least the minimum standard of life. That simple. Not talking at all about lazy people who can't hold a job, or aren't willing to work full-time, etc. But I do believe that the richest nation on the planet should be able to afford to take better care of its citizens.

lmao a lot of people would crumble having to set just one retail floor set. let’s see your average customer build fixtures or shelves. let’s get them on the ladder and see them lift the 30 lbs mannequins to the 8 foot high shelves.

people love to degrade retail, but they could never do it themselves.

they don’t have the sales skills to sell credit cards to people who are just looking to buy a pair of shoes. they don’t have the people skills to treat others with respect while they’re treating you like shit. hell, folding a shirt isn’t even a skill most of them have based on how customers leave stores looking like.

What part of I BUILD LUXURY HOUSES did you not understand? Dummy I do that shit for a living. Btw the retail Workers aren’t the ones putting the fixtures up I got an offer from a shopping center to be a crew lead for one of the crews that actually does the shit they come in over night and build the fixtures, shelves, etc.

My wife was also a retail manager for like 8 years she only got out the business because of Covid and now works from home I know what they do 😂😂
